I also single out young mothers and fathers, admiring their little ones; especially well-behaved children; and give them something positive in their harried days.
In checkout lines, I'm aware of persons, male or female, with just a few items and in a hurry - letting them go ahead, even if mine are few. I recall all those working days when I was tired or in a hurry to get on to the next stop or head for home.
Just yesterday in Wal-Mart in Aiken, with five items, I let a 50-ish probably working woman go ahead, and then a teenage girl with one item.
As the latter left, the first woman putting her change in her purse paused and observed, "I see you let someone else ahead," and smiled.
The choices are ours - stand our ground with a stone face that declares "It's My Turn" - or spread those no cost moments of ease for others....
