"Is there a ping list for Mars threads?"
Yes, I think Phil V. and Justpiper have ping lists.

Nice close-up of a roofing shingle.

But how far underground would you have to go to find liquid water (as opposed to frozen?) I would have to think that the average subsurface temperature of Mars is pretty low.

Well, Van Flandern is still a kook, despite having a legitimate science education.

I assume Mars has a hot core similar to the earth. I forgot the change in temperature of the earth going to the core but would guess a nice equation exists as a theoretical.

They just said they do not have the capibility on the rovers to analize organics.....but did speculate that organic life COULD exist in the conditions found.
The absence of any Bio types (on the panel) sems to give the impression that they weren't looking for any bio's on this mission.
Now that they may have stumbled upon something interesting they can't investigate it properly to come on out and say "WE FOUND LIFE FORMS"

The next robot with a drill will go down 2 meters. Is that enough to strike water? I think they would have to be lucky to find water at that depth. Maybe 200 feet would do it.

The absence of any Bio types (on the panel)
One of the panel members has an extensive history of papers discussing exobiology in detail, I forget which one.
To: Robe
Possbility that absence of bios on the panel was to keep the media from asking him/her direct questions? Is the media here (I'm cubicle bound, and jumping off and on as folks walk by).

They haven't said a single word about current water on Mars.I wasn't able to see any of the news conference, however, the implications and mounting evidence seem clear, that there may be water beneath the Martian surface. If all this is true, the planet has been through some great changes. Those changes could have included life in the past. Personally I believe they will eventually locate microorganisms on it's surface or below the surface.
It's a terrible shame the UK lander was lost, as it probably would have answered some of the biological questions by now.
