What they're talking about at this press conference is evidence liquid water in the past, not currently.

Doens't mean there isn't any current liquid water, of course.

Well, I noted that on the panel there was no one who was labelled a geologist. Maybe one was, but I find it interesting that we didn't have anyone labelled as such.

I REALLY want to know more about what I am seeing.

Is there a ping list for the Mars threads? I keep finding them by chance and would really like to go back and look at some of the photos. I just saw the trilobite thing on this thread!!!

Very odd...can anybody expand any further upon the brief comment made that NASA found on Mars what looked like "the remains of three WWII-era aircraft that disappeared somewhere near Bermuda"???

Oh wait, April Fool's is still a month away :-)

Wrong. You are probably thinking of the Voyager images from Io that showed volcanic geysers. Not water spouts. The Voyager images are from the late 70s, early 80s.

well, it can't be as bad for you as the 2 sandwiches who walked into that restaurant, only to be told, sorry, we don't serve food here.

An interesting question would be, if there is carbonate, what would be the ratio of lime to the carbonate; and the ratio of sulfate to sulfite? This might help to establish how strong was the oxidatizing environment when the minerals were laid down. It doesn't seem they have the instruments to determine these ratios on the rovers.

Calcium sulfate (gypsum, hemihydrate, or anhydrate) on earth are formed by precipitation from liquid water. Which form predominates depends on temperature and saline/pH of the ionic soup.

ESA will be imaging Cydonia. Hoagland and van Flandern are supposed to be on Coast tonight. Van Flandern is an eccentric astronomer; Hoagland is an edge-of-science journalist and showman. Might be interesting.

What they're talking about at this press conference is evidence liquid water in the past, not currently.

Only because it's not sitting on the surface.

Doens't mean there isn't any current liquid water, of course.

The mounting evidence in the data and images, is clealy pointing to sub-surface, underground water, possibly in *very* large amounts.

We've had pix of these objects for some time taken by one of the orbiters.. with no satisfactory explanation. If these really are what they look like, must be some big *ss bass there!

They haven't said a single word about current water on Mars.

I'm simply characterizing what is being discussed in the current news conference.

It's interesting to extrapolate from what they have already found out. I look forward to MORE info and explanations. Too bad the networks do not place more importance on this tremendous advance in knowledge of our universe. (Perhaps if NASA "sexed it up", they would cover it....she says snidely.)

This is the picture I showed my husband and son. In the center is a cluster of forms which appear to be the base of a crinoid. Up and to the left of that is a small round shape which looks remarkably like a cross-section of a crinoid stem (often called "Indian beads" in my part of the country, by people who don't know what they are).

LOL, I don't know why but your joke here reminds me of that great Far Side cartoon that shows the frogs coming out the back door of the frog legs restaurant on crutches.

As can be seen on many FR replies, a really large segement of the population is utterly disinterested in anything other than finding some sort of full-scale Marvin the Martian on Mars, and anything else is a failure and waste of money.
