A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....03-02-04....March Madness
Billie

A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Gosh, I know you've been anxiously awaiting the March Calendar of Special Events, and especially interested in knowing what we're celebrating today. (Stay tuned - that's coming up right after the calendar.) : )

I don't know who designated these 'holidays' - I am only presenting them as I found them at www.maineiac.com - who knows where they got them!

March Holidays

From
"In the month of March, we celebrate the big one for the Irish but, of course, everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day! However, March is not just for the wearin' o' the green..."

March is National Furniture Refinishing Month (Yippeeeeee!)
  • March 1 - National Pig Day and Peanut Butter Lover's Day (Mmmm, I LOVE peanut butter!)
  • March 2 - Old Stuff Day (I have a LOT of that!)
  • March 3 - I Want You To Be Happy Day, Peach Blossom Day and National Anthem Day*
  • March 4 - Holy Experiment Day (What kind of experiments are "Holy" ???)
  • March 5 - Multiple Personalities Day (I won't be celebrating this one but my other selves will be...)
  • March 6 - National Frozen Food Day (Oh boy!)
  • March 7 - National Crown Roast Of Pork Day (Huh?)
  • March 8 - Be Nasty Day (Ooooh, I LIKE this one!)
  • March 9 - Panic Day (Just one day for this?)
  • March 10 - Festival Of Life In The Cracks Day (Just where IS life in "the cracks" ???)
  • March 11 - Johnny Appleseed Day and Worship of Tools Day (And how, exactly, does one worship tools? Nevermind, I don't really want to know!)
  • March 12 - Alfred Hitchcock Day (This is cool!)
  • March 13 - Jewel Day (Maybe I'll get some fancy-schmancy ring with a beautiful jewel on it from my boyfriend today...Nah!)
  • March 14 - National Potato Chip Day (OhhhKAY!)
  • March 15 - Buzzard's Day and Everything You Think Is Wrong Day (What if we think we want to celebrate Buzzard's Day? Are we wrong??)
  • March 16 - Everything You Do Is Right Day (I know some people who celebrate this one EVERY day!!)
  • March 17 - Submarine Day and, of course, St. Patrick's Day!
  • March 18 - Supreme Sacrifice Day (This sounds kinda cool.)
  • March 19- Poultry Day (Yippee Skippee!)
  • March 20 - Proposal Day (Which goes well with "Jewel Day" on the 13th) and Festival Of Extraterrestrial Abductions Day ("Festival" ???)
  • March 21 - Fragrance Day (Okay, so I didn't get the ring on the 13th, but a nice bottle of cologne would be nice!)
  • March 22 - National Goof-off Day (I REALLY like this one! Do you think it's a paid holiday from work?)
  • March 23 - National Organize Your Home Office Day and National Chip and Dip Day(What's with the chips this month?)
  • March 24 - National Chocolate Covered Raisins Day (Mmmm!)
  • March 25 - Pecan Day and Waffle Day (MMMM!)
  • March 26 - Spinach Festival Day and Make Up Your Own Holiday Day (This one's been celebrated a LOT!)
  • March 27 - National "Joe" Day* (My dad, Joe, will like this one!)
  • March 28 - Something On A Stick Day (Anything???)
  • March 29 - Festival Of Smoke and Mirrors Day (???)
  • March 30 - I Am In Control Day (My other selves have March 5, so this one's for me!)
  • March 31 - Bunsen Burner Day (Why???) and National Clams On The Half Shell Day (WHY???)

* National "Joe" Day - March 27 - Those who hate their name have the right to have everyone they know call them "Joe" on this day.

* National Anthem Day - March 3 - On this day in 1931, President Hoover signed a bill making the Star Spangled Banner our National Anthem. In case you don't know all the words...

Oh say can you see,
By the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed
At the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad strips and bright stars,
Through the parilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched
Were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare,
The bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there.
Oh say does that Star Spangled
Banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave?

"(Just in case you're wondering, I didn't have to look up the lyrics, good American that I am...but don't ask me to sing the next three verses!)"

Old stuff? I love old stuff. I have a lot of old stuff....old house, old furniture, old pictures, old dishes, old clothes, old shoes, old habits....

Searching for just the right stuff for today, I asked the other sistahs if they would share some of their old stuff with us. Imagine my surprise when, one by one, each of them said they still have all their old prom dresses from high school! Bingo! We had the perfect Old Stuff for today's thread:
"What I Wore to My Senior Prom"

Thank you, Finest FRiends, for being a part of our FR Family, and for your daily participation and contributions.  Whether our theme for the day is silly, sweet, or serious, it is you that makes it fun!

THIS WEEK'S THREADS

03-01-04 Military Monday

Opinions by our own 'King of Ping'
The guy's good, folks!
Thanks, Mixer!

1) Click on the graphic to open the Calendar.
2) Once there you can click on any month and even click to the right to go into next year. Once you are in the month that you joined FR you will need to click on the number in the calendar and then an add item screen will come up.
3) In the next box enter your name in the "Calendar Text" field and then click on submit.
4) If any of the screens fail to load simply click on refresh in your browser and that will usually fix it.
5) If all else fails or simply if you want me to do this for you send me a FReepmail and I will gladly do it for you. ~Mixer

When I posted that, it was fine. Comcast DID mess up my URLs, but NOW they seemed to have fixed whatever was causing the problems with my URLs. It's showing as I type this, anyway ...

Sorry 'bout that ! ;^)

I see your trying to get back in my good graces, aren't you?

It won't work! I'm still taking back my gift and might even give it to dixie, but I'm not making any promises!

Ha! Dixie's not fooled by you either - LadyX is the only one who can't see what a scrooge you really are.

LOL! Some of these 'days' are hilarious, aren't they? I swear some were written just for T Man. :)

#83: oops...I mean #81. Gosh...I'm full of oops's today....am I making your day TTM since Billie was right and you were wrong????

Well, he does seem to need someone to beat up on, and I don't think he's really particular which one of us it is - as long as it's one of 'us'. :)

Hi again Billie...here at the same time??? Had to check out earlier and only have a few moments...heading to my friend's campaign headquarters...Everyone is predicting a very very close race..... Have ignored the statewide news....both Kerry and Edwards (and ofcourse Kucinich) have been polluting our fine state.... LOL...the only presidential signs in our county are Kucinich...and I love it that they also have signs of our local opponent for judge. That should send a message.

Aqua...I hate hearing you can't use photodelux on XP....our new computer with XP was delivered today....Of course I didn't master the program yet...not even close... We're keeping the current computer connected to work out the kinks of the new one. Have a wireless remote program which we currently use with our laptops so we can take time with "the conversion" Would love to hear some tips and the problems you encountered when changing over.

Lori...keep missing you when you stop in....your little cooler will be arriving in Calif soon....And we enjoyed every last piece of the tri-tip. This was the first time I didn't throw out a portion of leftovers!

(((((dansy))))))) Looking forward to tomorrow. THANKS again for covering!

Hi Sis! I'm here, you're here - yippee!!!

For heaven's sake, you don't need to send that cooler back. It is hardly worth the postage it will cost.

I am so pleased that you enjoyed the tri-tip. I bet you can find lots of ways to use that Raven's too. I think it would be good on most kinds of meat.

HUGS!!!

I found it awesome. Teared up when they scourged and crucified our Lord.

I can't see why so many are saying this is from a Roman Catholic view. I'm Assembly of GOD...GOD deserves all caps. Mel just went by the NT. The ugly baby carried by satan I think represented our sin.

Satan was not as beautiful as I expected him to be. After all satan was GOD's most beautiful angel.

The way Mary was played/spoke was reasonable for some one watching her beloved son being murdered before her eyes.

Mel did a great job of telling the story of the Crucifixion.

I didn't find The Passion of Christ overly violent, given what we know about the priest and Roman justice. Violence was a very big part of everyday life in the Holy Land at that time. Rebillions were frequent, and Rome kept 'order' through brutality.

I didn't expect a sanitized version like so many Bibical movies about Jesus are.

I found the Resurection scene well done, especially the tight shot of the nail holes in the hands.

Loved the flashbacks.

Can you imagine the howls of violence we'd hear if Mel should decide to do the Second Coming of Christ in Revelations?

The Left Behind series are tame in comparison to what Mel could do.

I let the trouble about graphics and copyright, that was recently stirred up by the Kerry photo form Corbis, dampen my willingness to link photos.

Don't wanna get Jim Robinson's FR into trouble.

I've never linked form sites that want permission, or claim copyright, so I guess I should just relax have fun...)

Thanks for encouraging me.

Good evening, Miss Billie of North Fork, is it, there in Texas?

Looked in Google for the picture of Carol Burnett in the Tara draperies, and the closest I could come was this:

Isn't it a shame the present younger generation doesn't have the kind of comedy she presented?
Today's children are more famiiiar with The Simpsons and being smart-mouthed than with the kind of subtle pokes at life that made us roar with delighted laughter.

I can't, for the life of me, figure out why Kucinich and Sharpton are both still IN this thing!

Hey, Maggie! Glad you got here - was just about to go start dinner but wanted to say hello! Hmmm - looks like there would have been a Carol Burnett/Scarlett O'Hara draperies graphic!

Will try to get back later this evening!

Hope this reply finds you all well. Been missing my FReeper FRiends and hope you are all well.

Saw The Passion of the Christ last night and was truly moved and had a restoration of faith. Will try to check in and read all of your thoughts in some of the threads dedicated to this powerful movie and tribute to our Lord.

Hope to have a chance to speak with you all soon.
