Gay Marriages in Louisiana (FMA senate vote count on amendment)
kplctv.com ^ | 02/24/04 | Reported by KPLC Staff

A politically active gay and lesbian group in Louisiana immediately attacked President Bush for his proposal to ban gay marriages.

But others, including two US Senate candidates, say they would support such a ban.

Yesterday, Bush called on Congress to pass a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage to protect what he calls the most fundamental institution of civilization.

Christopher Daigle is the political adviser to Equality Louisiana. He says the issue of marriage regardless of the gender of the parties involved should not be used as a football on the political gridiron.

US Representative David Vitter, Metairie, a candidate for Senate, supports the president's move.

Vitter was an original co-sponsor of a House resolution by Representative Marilyn Musgrave, of Colorado, calling for such an amendment.

Representative Chris John, who is also a candidate for the Senate, is not one of the 112 co-sponsors of the Musgrave legislation.

But he issued a statement yesterday saying that if a constitutional amendment came to the floor of the House, he would vote for it.

State Treasurer John Kennedy, the other Democratic candidate, could not be reached for comment. The three men are vying to replace longtime Democratic US Senator John Breaux, who opposes such an amendment.

Breaux says states rather than Congress should decide whether to recognize gay marriages. Bush left the door open to civil unions in which states could grant health benefits to homosexual partners.

But he says that all states should be bound by the same definition of marriage.

Why no comment from about about San Francisco breaking state law then? hmmmm? I think he really means as long as states' choose gay marriage. Liberals want to federalize the issue in favor of queer marriage. They just don't want to do it through legislatures. They want to do it through the courts.

John Breaux is retiring. If he was running for re-election I betcha he'd vote for in a heartbeat.

Exactly. I advocate a law that takes back control from the courts not one that addresses gay marriage. We should make the issue activist judges. Let's see the liberals label that a "wedge" issue.

What a surprise. Mushy Middle Breaux won't vote for the consitutional amendment. Oh well, he's leaving anyway. Now to elect someone with some spine...

Actually I don't think it would matter if he was running for re-election. Breaux is God down here. He won't get tossed out for anything.

Question marks indicate those whose comments have been ambiguous enough that I may've misinterpreted. McCain should probably be in the opposed camp based on his comments to the Washington Post.

I am also opposed to this amendment.. but the political dynamics change considerably once a gay couple is "married" in MA, and then attempts to have the marriage recognized in Louisiana.

David Vitter is next in line for a run on the senate seat to be vacated by breaux. I pray that he gets elected.

DOMA will be struck down.....by Scotus or federal appeals courts because of the "Full Faith and Credit provision of the Constitution," when other states refuse MA gay licenses.

Gay Marriages will be legal in 5 years in all 50 states w/o FMA.

"I will probably work to pass it, but there's about 10 percent of me saying, ‘Is this the correct approach? When you start amending the Constitution, I get a little bit nervous,' " Burns said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Burns expressed a similar view Wednesday on NBC's "Today," saying he was "very cool to the idea of an amendment."

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., said he supports traditional marriage, but has misgivings about amending the Constitution.

Most Dems? The majority, maybe, but certainly not most of them or all of them.

You think Blanche Lincon will oppose it? Not if she wants to keep her seat. I'm guessing the same for Tom Dashle. Joe Lieberman will also most likely support it, and Zell's vote is a sure thing.

I'm guessing, that at the end of the day, you'll have 15-20 D's for it, and 2-5 R's against. That'll make it a real barn burner to get to 67.

Either way, W has proven himself to be a master once again. It'll be just like 2002, force an issue that the dems don't want to talk about in the limelight right before the election, and force them to take a stand. They will either loose support of their base, or of swing voters. Their choice.

I'm happy with either one :)
