Thanks for the ping!
Without having had time to read all the posts, I'm happy to see the President take this stand. This showdown has been on the horizon for a very long time. This insidious movement is not about defining marriage, it is a set up for lawsuits. The first church or temple that declines to perform these "marriage" ceremonies will be sued for discrimination and lose with activist judges.
The religious institution loses its tax exemption, the "injured parties" collect and the secular society, that is not based on any moral foundation or sense of responsibility is codified.

Bush needs some gay people standing next to him on this issue because you know what the left is going to say. "Bush is dividing America..."
Bush should enlist the help of people like Al Rantel and Tammy Bruce. Both gay, both articulate and both against gay marriages.

But you inferred that he had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do this because it was an election year?
So which is it?
To: Coop
I watch it a lot and with only a few exceptions I see missed opportunities to respond to RAT lies, misleading news stories and far too RAT-friendly stories. I am sick of seeing Bill Richardson and the ex-Clinton ambassadors who are all over their broadcasts. If I want to see RAT lies allowed to stand without challenge I can tune into CNN.
Fox is becoming a huge disappointment. (Bret Hume is an exception.)

That's a good question. What *is* "up" with it?

The intent of the 14th was good. The wording, however, allowed the federal government to leak into pretty much anything they want to (even more than the "elastic commerce clause", a much easier problem to solve).
Witness the application of the 1st Amendment to entities other than Congress, with catastrophic results. Courtesy of the 14th Amendment as interpreted by the USSC. That was not the intent of the 14th, but now it is the foundation for all sorts of mischief. And much more to come.

I have been reading your comments on this topic. Are you on the reelection committee for Marilyn Musgrave? Or are you angry about the republican's stand on homosexual marriage?
I don't understand what specifically you are so angry about.

Any delays in bringing it up for a vote, a la Tom Daschle, is going to cost the democrats dearly in the fall. Daschle is up for re-election and is facing a nasty fight to save his own seat. He cannot possibly dealy, avoid, obstruct or filibuster any such vote, or he faces political inhilation at home.

Others are blinded by partisan politics. A constitutional amendment would take time, money and would cause INCREASED partisanship. If Bush would simply STAND UP, and say what is so obvious, that gays are not discriminated against. They can marry the person of their choice, of the opposite sex, just like straights. If they want to change the laws, let them spend the money, the time and political capital to do so. Enforce the laws of the land, that is what the President needs to do. He is passing the buck on this, to a process that will start during his term, and end somewhere in the distant future. By then I am sure, thousands of gays will have married, and public opinion will have changed.

The only thing people have said to me about this is to agree with me-- that it is politically expedient to do what he is doing when he is doing it. But, because of your insufferable cynicism, you think Bush is as self-aggrandizing as you.
He's not. Bush is doing this to protect marriage.
Combover-Bob Smith for Senate.

"The problem here is not marriage, or gays or any of that, it's the way in which the federal government is running roughshod over the states and the people." How do you propose we restore the proper balance of power between the federal and state governments now, which clearly is out of control and only going to become worse?
To: Dr. Marten
Ha-Ha! The Democrats have a real problem is seems. Who are they going to dump on?
Homosexuals or Blue-Collar Union Christian Families?
To: Miss Marple
Folks, the timing was superb. Bear in mind that Bush has just made both Kerry and Edwards go on the record with this issue prior to Super Tuesday.

This issue may well CAUSE another civil war!
