FREE REPUBLIC NETWORK LAUNCHES WEB SITE ON "WINTER SOLDIER INVESTIGATION" AND KERRY SLANDER OF U.S. TROOPS IN VIETNAM

(Washington, DC) The Free Republic Network today announced the unveiling of www.WinterSoldier.com, a new web site to provide news, analysis and research material regarding the false claim by John Kerry and others during the Vietnam era that atrocities were routinely committed by America's military.

In 1971 former Navy Lt. John Kerry testified before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations about American "war crimes" in Southeast Asia, which he described as "not isolated incidents but crimes committed on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command". Free Republic Network Director Scott Swett released the following statement:

"John Kerry played a key role in the leftist disinformation campaign that undermined support for the war by slandering a generation of American soldiers as mass murderers of civilians. Kerry testified before the Senate that the United States committed war crimes in Vietnam as a matter of military policy, citing claims of atrocities made at the discredited 'Winter Soldier Investigation' -- an event primarily funded by Jane Fonda."

"The truth is that atrocities were the exception in Vietnam, not the rule."

"Since Senator Kerry has made the strength of his military record a key issue in his pursuit of the Presidency, it is important for voters to have access to a more complete picture of his actions than is available from the Kerry campaign or the media. WinterSoldier.com will document and analyze the activities in which Kerry and others participated during the Vietnam era."

The site features a section on Kerry's hard-to-find 1971 book "The New Soldier" and covers the activities of the group Vietnam Veterans Against the War and its sponsors. New information will be added as it becomes available. Readers are invited to provide feedback, submit editorial pieces, and provide relevant material. The site will go live on Monday, February 23, 2004.

"I recommend the seminal book about Fonda's antiwar activities by Henry and Erika Hollzer, "Aid and Comfort" Jane Fonda in North Vietnam. It is a well-documented book with hundreds of footnotes. The Holzers make a compelling case that Fonda should have been tried for treason using legal precedent and the Constitution. The VVAW association is also included."

One of the things I was never able to understand about Fonda was why she was allowed to travel to Hanoi while we were at war with that country. Isn't there a law against that for "common" citizens?

Good question. Fonda was fund raising for the VVAW as well as the Black Panthers as early as 1969. According to a report from the Detroit Free Press , on November 22, 1969--"during a fund raising tour for GIs in trouble with the Army, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, and the Black Panther Party--she [Fonda] said in a speech:

"I would think that if you understood what communism was, you would hope, you would pray on your knees that we would become communist. The peace proposal of the Viet Cong is the only honorable, just, possible way to achieve peace in Vietnam. Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton is the only man I ever met that I would trust as leader of this country."

Jane Fonda was spouting the pro-Communist, anti-US, and pro NV line long before she went to Hanoi. Her trip there was the culmination of several years of antiwar activities. Along with Donald Sutherland, her lover at the time, Fonda founded in early 1971 the "FTA" "popularly understood to be an acronym for 'F**k the Army' a radical anti-war, anti-American, road show troupe that played to GIs around the country."

Kerry tries to distance himself from Fonda saying that he didn't condone her actlivities when she went to Hanoi in 1972. Kerry had to know of her of treasonous statements before she ever went there. I am sure that with all of the various antiwar rallies and meetings, there is a "money shot" out there showing Fonda and Kerry together "on stage." It also wouldn't surprise me that she donated to some of his Senate campaigns.

Great. You will find it very interesting. However, you will find the description of the treatment of US POWs in North Vietnam very disturbing. The foreward of the book is written by Col. George "Bud" Day, USAF, a former POW in Hanoi and a Congressional Medal of Honor winner.

This is a pretty famous speech from Fonda, of course. But I have never heard that it was in this context before. Do you have a link. Or if it is from a book, can you scan or type it out a bit more.

If this was the context of these remarks, it would make a great subject for a thread--and it's pretty newsworthy.

The closest thing I've seen on the internet is this, from the JBS:

"Not one to allow felonious conduct to interfere in her appraisal of a man's leadership capabilities, Jane proudly announced during a speech at Michigan State University on November 22, 1969, that "Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton is the only man I've ever met that I would trust as the leader of this country." Perhaps she had yet to meet Charles Manson.

In that same speech, delivered as part of a tour to raise funds for the defense of G.I. war resisters in trouble with the Army, Jane Fonda called the Communist Vietcong, who were as she spoke engaged in torturing and killing American Servicemen, "the conscience of the world." She spoke of these butchers as "driven by the same spirit that drove Washington and Jefferson." While men, women, and children were being brutalized throughout Indochina in the name of Communism, Jane Fonda rejoiced of the Gulag: "I would think that if you understood what communism was, you would hope, you would pray on your knees that we would someday become communist."

But it doesn't specifically mention her involvement at the time with the VVAW.

I am only stressing this because most people do not seem to think Fonda got involved with the VVAW until Operation RAW, which was in September 1970. If you have evidence her involvement was sooner--and that this very wild speech was part of a fundraiser for them--that is news, I think.

The line is accurate. "Military policy" has to be carried out by real soldiers, not some piece of paper. According to Kerry, that policy had been carried out in real time.

Excellent question. The Holzer book goes into some detail on Fonda's travel to Vietnam as well as some of the other celebrities who went there earlier such as Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Tom Hayden etc. I will have to check and see what the exact travel restructions were at the time.

Fonda arrived in Hanoi on July 8, 1972 via an Aeroflot flight from Moscow, but she was not listed on the manifest. The flight transited throught Vientiane, but Fonda did not disembark. Fonda had first flown to Paris and then to Moscow. Whe Fonda disembarked in Hanoi she was "clad in black pajamas [typically worn by the Viet Cong in the South} and a white tunic." "She told her uniformed , helmeted hosts, with 'greetings' from revolutionary 'comrades' in America."

The quote is from the Holzer book (page 21). It quotes a reporter for the Detroit Free Press (Nov 22, 1969) and a speech she made at a Michigan State speech. The DFP report is contained in Hearings Before the Committee on Internal Security, House of Representatives, Ninety-Second Congtress, Second Session, 7679.
