This is a pure political move, but very interesting. It puts Lockyer on the spot but costs Arnold nothing. If Lockyer obeys, he offends his base. If he refuses, he as good as says that even though he is the Attorney General he refuses to support the law.

The way I look at it, San Frangaysco has just created a tremendous amount of revenue by doing this...I wouldn't be surprised if that ridiculous mayor does something else to generate revenue.
By the way, there is no "refund" on the application process.

I'm thinking of robbing a bank tomorrow!

Could you save me some? I promise to put some aside to bring you cigarettes while you're in the joint. :-)

Not to mention the S.C. ruling when it addressed the polygamists of Utah, years ago. Will the S.C. cower before the queers now?

The wheels of justice turn slowly....if one follows the law. It's only people, who break the laws, who do things hurriedly.

When a CA Superior Court judge makes a mockery of CA law, ruling in favor of SF Mayor, it's time for Arnold and the rest to put their foot down hard.

The "marriages" are void John. This is just a publicity stunt, which is entertaining, and will allow all the pols to position themselves over the void event. California loves political theater (notice it is spelled "theater" not theatre," you closet Limey you :)). God bless it.

Ohhh I'm sure they'll change their mind when the city is taken to court for fraud and altering official state documents. In this case a marriage certificate.

What Newsom did is really stupid. If you are supporting gay marruage, what Newsom is doing could create all sorts of backlash. Gay marriage was way under in the list of voter concerns in a recent gallup poll, but with the daily news on what happen in SF, voters in swing states will pay attention. They will latch onto the idea that the liberal left is pushing their cultural values onto them and this could just sway enough votes for the conservatives. The gay marriage issue is a loser in states like Missouri, Ohio, Iowa or even Pennsylvania. Just imagine Kerry is nominee for the dims, convention in Boston along side with celevrations by the gay community (the summer of gay love parade), the picture of such is priceless in the eye of voters in the cultural conservative swing states.

Well next up on the theatrics front is when one of the newly "married" couples petitions the court for a divorce...

I'm sure he had to get an army of lawyers to go through all the possible scenarios 1st. Prudence is always wise.

Yep, the city made $258,000. But the state can fine the city $1,000 each, that's $3,000,000 toward the state budget. Smart move Arnie! Keep this up and California will be out of the red in no time.

Yes, it's about time.

Gays won't know what hit them when this is really fought out. This is not a 50%/50% issue in this country. The gays are overwhelmingly outnumbered by those who are against it. This is a battle they just can't win. WE will demand a constitutional amendment if necessary. Incrementalism does work. This is not incremental. This is big. Too big for them to get by with. They have made a mistake. People who have never, ever gotten involved will find a voice. This is why Barney Frank and Boxer and Pelosi are running from it.

N.M. attorney general nullifies same-sex marriage licenses

Chicago Tribune

(KRT) - As gay men and lesbians rushed their wedding vows in a small yard behind the courthouse, the New Mexico attorney general stepped in late Friday to invalidate the first day of same-sex marriages in Sandoval County, which briefly became the third community in the nation to try to allow such unions.

After 66 marriage licenses were issued, the county sheriff and a deputy stood tall in front of the county clerk's counter and blocked about 30 angry couples from obtaining licenses just 40 minutes before closing.

In Sheriff John Paul Trujillo's hand was the attorney general's advisory letter, which stated that "until the laws are changed through the legislative process or declared unconstitutional by the judicial process, the statutes limit marriage in New Mexico to a man and a woman."
