STEIN REPORT XXXXX Tuesday, February 17 2004 16:00:26 ET XXXXX

VIRGINIA SENATE OVERWHELMINGLY PASSES BILL CLOSING LOOPHOLES ON ILLEGAL ALIEN BENEFITS

In a lopsided, veto-proof vote, the Virginia Senate passed SB521, a bill that requires most people claiming Virginia residence to prove that they are lawfully in the U.S. This comes on the heels of a major victory last year to deny a Virginia drivers license to illegal aliens. Activist groups across the state, who have been pushing measure like this since 9/11, expressed their gratitude for the expertise and advice offered by FAIR during this important fight. "Our Coalition is extremely grateful for the enormous contribution that Fair has made in getting SB 521 through the first phase of legislative process," noted Bob Shoemaker. SB 521 is a model, state-based initiative to prevent illegal alien misuse of government services and outlaws the acceptance of the controversial consular matricula cards while safeguarding the rights of legal immigrants and citizens.

Your wasting your time. The government isn't interested in what the people want.

Have you heard one word of this on the broadcast media? I haven't.

Yes, every little bit helps and good for Virginia.

Look, I really appreciated your donations in the past, but donating to FR does not give you a license to post profanities. Your posts were pulled for good reason. If it costs the loss of your donations, so be it. Thanks anyway.

I like the way you worded that.

Thank you. However, I confess that I appropriated it from another. Nonetheless, it is particularly fitting for far too many currently sitting on the bench.

As to the drafters of the law considering judicial meddling and preparing for it, I seriously doubt it. Usually, the compromises that must be made to get legislation to a vote precludes such preparation, even if the drafters were willing to prepare for it.

Californians, download and circulate the petition now.

Downloaded, circulated, signed and sent. California is the state most badly in need of this legislation. We have several million illegal aliens to support.

May this be an example to other states

Agreed. We all need to tell our state politicians to make our states as "illegal unfriendly" as possible.

Can we get some Virigians to move to California?

That's like volunteering for the Gulag. This native Californian moved to Virginia twenty-one years ago and hasn't looked back (except to laugh).

You'd be welcome. I'm a native Californian (born in Riverside County) that has been in Virginia for the last 21 years.

The more that do .. the better we'll get a handle on the illegals

It won't solve the problem all together .. but it's a pretty good start

No energy for that happy horse sh*t anymore.

I know what you mean. Between President Bush's proposal for amnesty and seeing more of John Kerry's record, I found myself fuming all the time. I hardly felt like posting anything for about a week. A least the state of Virginia is moving in the right direction.

Californians, download and circulate the petition now. The deadline for returning petitions is April 15, 2004 to place the initiative on the November ballot.

Your on the right track. Good luck.

Actually the bill has been touted as positive by gays, and they are making the most hay out of it. However the effect is broader. Until this legislation, Virginia was one of the last (if not the last) state (actually Commonwealth) in the country that dictated to business who they could insure, and who they couldn't. This legislation actually gets government out of the business sector when it comes to health insurance. I don't favor granting special status to gays, but again I am for anything that gets government out of the business of business.

This can't cheapen your marriage. The value of your marriage is between you and your wife, no amount of legislation can change that.

Good Grief........I was born in the US (as were my parents and my maternal granparents) and had to go through he!! to transfer my Delaware drivers license to Virginia.

I like loopholes being closed, but good grief - how much more difficult can they possibly make it to get a VA DL?????

Agreed. A combination of efforts could work to bring illegal immigration under control.
