They're waiting to follow France and Germany's lead.
Did you happen to notice the absolute lack of demonstrations in the aftermath of 9/11...both here and abroad?
Did you also happen to notice the massive demonstrations protesting the war against Iraq?
Moderates, by their very nature, do not "rise up in outrage", extremists do.

After the lecture, many Jews in the audience were visibly shaken. I don't have data to support it, but my guess is that most of them will still vote for Rats when given the chance. This is one thing I don't understand about American Jews. They overwhelmingly support Rat candidates, who are more in sympathy with their would-be Islamic murderers than most Republican candidates.

Take this lecture as a perfect example.
Moderates went to listen, extremists went to disrupt.

Turkey for one. Turkey BANS islamic political parties.
India another.
India is NOT a muslim country
Indonesia another.
Indonesia - one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Not to mention the brutal ethnic cleansing of Christians by muslims on the islands of Maluku and North Maluku
Philippines another.
The Philippines are NOT a muslim country.
So I am STILL waiting for you to mention a muslim country that has anything like freedom and liberty (or even democracy).

"If reaction to Daniel Pipes lecture on Tuesday (2/10) was any indication, fascism is alive and well at UC Berkeley""
Well, DuH
"ironically, the home of ''free speech'' and ''tolerance'' has shown itself to be distinctly intolerant to those who express political views other than their own."
Another big DUH
I'm not reacting to the writer, but to the left who are blind to this hypocrisy. Or pretend to be.

A group of Nazis hold hands on the steps of the University of Vienna in an attempt to prevent Jews from entering the building. The action led to a day of student rioting which had to be suppressed by the police.

At least we know how Mulsims behave in a democracy...cant imagine them maintaining either a democracy or a republic of their own for very long...
They seem to have difficulty with freedom (or seeing others free)..lacking an internal locus of control ...they must impose external ones on each other and everyone around them...(naturally the elite have a different set of rules for themselves)..
On the other hand...they might make acceptable neocons...

There were millions of moderate Germans in Germany in WWII and before. By not speaking up, most of them ended up dead.

All of these combined make Daniel Pipes public enemy number one according to UC Berkeley leftists and especially radical Muslim students. Indeed, the Muslim Student Association (MSA) was out in full force on Tuesday, acting like the thugs and bullies they routinely accuse Pipes of supporting. There were about 50-70 of them, amidst a crowd of 700, and after failing to prevent Pipes from speaking, they did their best to try and disrupt the lecture and intimidate the audience.
Free Speech for me, but not for thee.

The process of neutralizing and eventually converting moderates into radicals is simple and fool-proof: First you terrorize your opponents into silence so that your movement appears to have no opposition. This gives you tremendous power, not only because moderates quietly feel they are alone in their disagreement with you, but also because the ignorant media especially the foreign media casts you as the choice of the people. Having succeeded in silencing moderates, the next step is terrorizing them into cooperating with you. Soon passive cooperation is not enough. You want more than their body you want their soul, so you terrorize the moderates into being "passionate" in your cause.
In the end, your movement appears to have only loyal and active supporters. Now you are in total control, for who would dare speak out against you? As Hitler said, 10 years before he finally rose to power, "The National Socialist Movement will in the future ruthlessly prevent if necessary by force all meetings or lectures that are likely to distract the minds of our fellow countrymen." In other words, all opposition is evil and we will protect you from it. Sound familiar? -- Source

November 4, 2002, 9:00 a.m. The Secret of Turkish Democracy A lone model. By Barbara Lerner |
|
hy is Turkey the only Muslim democracy in the Mideast? In a region where "democracy" means one-man-one-vote-one-time, how has Turkey's republic managed to survive for 79 years? That's not just a record for the Mideast. It's longer than any comparably democratic regime in France, Belgium or Germany, three countries currently beset by doubt about whether Turkey is a fit candidate for the European Union able to meet their own allegedly high moral and political standards. That will be decided in Copenhagen in December, but European pretensions aside, it is remarkable that the republican form of government Kemal Attaturk imposed on the Turkish people in 1923 is still functioning. Fellow Muslims, in all the Arab and Persian lands that surround them, are ruled by despots, and in all of them, fanaticism and terror run rampant. Only the Turks keep holding hotly contested elections, then turning over power to the winners without firing a shot, as they are set to do after yesterday's election. What makes the Turks so different from their Arab and Persian neighbors, and indeed, their European ones? What is the secret of Turkish democracy? Source

LG...when did India become a muslim country? When did the Philippines attain a muslim majority? Explain why both these countries are fighting muslim insurgencies and terror within their own borders. You argument lacks truth.
