....Every Day

FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.

Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.

Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.

There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!

If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.

Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.

It was equally an engineering feat to blast and shape that granite, as well as artistic effort to make such good likenesses.

Incredible isn't it? I never made it over there, when I traveled through S. Dakota; but I did go to Custer's Battle Field (I refuse to use new name, changed for pc reasons). That, of course, has nothing to do with Mt. Rushmore, or even matches the incredibleness; however, just standing there gave me a sense of awe...I do hope one day to see this great work.

Yes, it is supposed to get a little warmer, I heard 30's by mid week. That will feel like a heat wave.
The worst part of it being so cold is the ice. I haven't been able to do anything about it.
My driveway is a mess, ice in some spots 3 to 4 inches thick. I'm ready for spring.

How long are the schools in your area closed ?
My kids are off till Wednesday. A 4 day weekend for what they are calling Patriots day?

I am convinced that the schools are pushing for a 4 day week. The kids get so much time off.

This whole off school business is ridiculous. My daughter has the WHOLE WEEK off....called "winter break." Sheesh, they just had winter break at Christmas.

My first journey up there was quite memorable.
As I recall, it was about 30 miles from the city, which itself is at a 3,500 foot elevation, and the road winds up much higher to Mt. Rushmore.
After spending time there, we began the descent. Before long, there was a break in the treeline, from which point one could see seemingly endless miles to the East and the prairies that stretch forth.

History lover that I am, always 'seeing' in areas things of the past, I imagined I was a Sioux warrior astride his horse long ago, looking at moving specks out there.

Buffalo herd? No - - a sight he had never seen, that portended disaster for him and the Indian Nations of the West and their entire way of life....wagons and white men and women, bringing eventual destruction and displacement from their sacred grounds.

Seeing these areas and learning the true history, you are told and can conclude for yourself Custer was a dirty name. There is one preserved Fort we toured, where Custer made a binding U.S. government treaty with the Indians, that if they let the settlers therein remain safe and live in peace, "the white man would cease taking further land."

He, of course, broke his and our word when gold was discovered in the mountains, and greed ruled.

He was no hero, and I felt the Indians were totally justified in wiping out his attacking force.

Think what you like, but in my opinion, we did not always act with honor in the shaping of America.

Mike was my college roomate at San Fernando Valley College, now known as Cal State San Fernando. Along with more beers than I'd like to remember, we spent alot of time playing golf. I always thought Mike would end up as a golf instructor or teacher, as he had a real passion for the game. I still to this day have Mike's putter in my golf bag and use it any time I play. When we left SFVSC Mike gave me his putter as he said I needed all the help I could get. Although over the years I have replaced all of my clubs a number of times, I have not, nor will I ever replace that putter. I think of Mike on every putt and am very proud to relay the story of my putter to any golf partners.

I hadn't realized he did that, LadyX....and it is true that many of our past leaders did not act with honor in their treatment of the Indians.....but I have also read stories about the reverse being true, mostly in the Pennsylvania/lower western N.Y. area. Then there are yet other stories about how some tribes were very cruel to other Indian tribes, warring against each other.

No group of people are saints. The human condition is a sad one, that's for sure.

They said on the radio this morning that it was our biggest snowfall in this area since February 1978 ! ...

Although my forebears were among the first settlers in America in the 1600's in South Carolina (Charles Town and Georgetown), I view our history from the perspective that North America at the time consisted of Indians and probably Mexicans.

As Europeans made sailing vessels that enabled them to reach Canada and the now United States, no doubt Vikings preceding the French and Spanish and Portuguese and Italian explorers in reaching our shores.

How does that entitle them to 'claim' the land??
At least when Iraq invaded Kuwait, they claimed it had belonged to their people before, and perhaps had at some point.

We, however, had no such reason to take this land, and in the eyes of the world, were merely just conquerors without justification.

The Indian tribes living here at first were often hospitable to the white settlers, but when they were being crowded off their lands and denied hunting, etc., how could they be blamed for becomng hostile and aggressive?!!

If I brought thousands of friends and tried to take over your house and land in New York, would you meekly hand over the keys and move away?
I thought not!

It is said that the first scalpers were white men, and the Indians adopted it to show they would resist encroachment and our invasion.

All food for thought.....

And of course, any two different peoples/tribes war upon one another, just as it was in The Beginning with Cain and Abel.
Might alone does not make it "right," however.

We have what we have now, and cannot change things, but at least America does not desire any longer to conquer other lands per se.
(Think Spanish American War - contrived blowing up of ship justifies taking The Philippines, Puerto Rico, etc.?)

Were we to do so now would be to risk God's wrath, I believe.
We are engaged in conflicts now solely to give others a chance to live free rather than under dictators.
