John Kerry seems to have had a way of eluding the bad odor that clings to his old associates. On "Meet the Press" in 1971, he appeared with VVAW member Al Hubbard, a veteran who was exposed around this time for lying about his rank and combat experience (he had seen no combat). While this confirmed suspicions about the dubious identities of many of the winter soldiers, it didn't keep Kerry from becoming famous. The young politician was able to have his cake and eat it, too, becoming the establishment, patriotic face of a radical, anti-patriotic movement. Quite a trick, really.

Not exactly sure who funded the Winter Soldeir Hearings. However, from STOLEN VALOR by Burkett/Whitley-the major organizers were Fonda,Jane, Dick Gregory, Phl Ochs, Graham Nash, David Crosby and actor David Sutherland. Lawyer/activist Mark Lane was also one of the organizers.

Perhaps the KGB helped fund this smear-campaign against VN vets?

'Vietnamization' began in @ late 1969....

It was in the summer of 69 the 9thID stood down
and was sent to Hawaii...this began the wholesale withdrawal...

By 1970 there were many volunteers who were not allowed to go to Vietnam

We all know now why the AWOL story has surfaced....the rat anticipating all of this being brought up in the campaign has countered with the desertion story....after all desertion is far worse than Kerry's activities after the VN war.

It's a term these people coined in tribute (or mockery) of Tom Paine's "Summer Soldier."

"We call this investigation the "Winter Soldier Investigation." The term "Winter Soldier" is a play on words of Thomas Paine in 1776 when he spoke of the Sunshine Patriot and summertime soldiers who deserted at Valley Forge because the going was rough." -- Kerry in his Senate speech, April 1971.

But I think they came up with the idea when they were terrorizing Valled Forge in September 1970.
