The mother should have known how her daughter was getting home.

Carlie's father was prepared to pick her up in his car. Carlie told the sleep over mother that her parents said that she could walk home. Carlie's parents never gave her permission to walk home, she made that decision on her own and was not truthful to the sleep over parents.

We don't know what the mother knew. I do know I've dropped off my 6 year old girl for a sleepover at her friends, and tell the parents of the other girl that we'll be in touch with them the next day to arrange transportation home. Until I get that call, I don't know if I'm picking her up or if the other parents are bringing her home. Now, let's say she's 11. She lies to the other parents and says I gave her permission to walk home. Then she starts walking. All the while, I'm at home, waiting for the call from the other parents to arrange transportation. I have no idea that my daughter was even ready to come home!

This is what I think happened (we're all speculating here), and such a scenario leaves the mother blameless.

Sad to say, but in this day and age, if I were the host of a sleepover, I would make arrangements directly with the parents about transportation.

I hope, at least, now more parents will do so.

In fact, if I were the host of a sleepover, I would feel it my responsibility to personally take each child home.

You misunderstand. My indignation isn't that you're trying to blame Carlie, it's that you're faulting the mother. Once again, THE MOTHER DID NOT KNOW her dausghter was walking home, so how could you blame her? And if she was at a slumber party, it is quite clear that the 11-year old dressed herself - the mother wan't even there. The clothes show no skin, not even the ever-popular midriff, so I don't think anyone could call them provacative. With what we know - the mother is blameless.

The mother should be buying her childs clothes, no? What 11 year old should be wearing makeup? I think parent's should be more concerned with what's going on with their children and teens. At 11 you are clearly a child.

You would also want to know quite abit about the family you are letting your son daughter spend the night with. Clearly if I was the mother some red flags would be raised about who this friend's step dad was...

Outta pass a law that would give both parents time alone with their kids killer. Only reservation would be they couldn't kill him - maime would be OK.

So sad

(what is going on on this thread, just looking at some posts surrounding yours. Yikes. Don't tell me there's some implicit blaming of the parents!)

How could you EVER leave a 6-year-old without having CONCRETE knowledge how she is getting home???

I blame this Smith and want him to suffer merciously. I blame our Judges and I blame the lawyers, both scum. I also blame our elected officials Congress and the Senate for not enforcing our laws.

We the people who do every thing possible to get out of jury duty carry as much responsibility for letting these predatory animals walk. Had the jury found him guilty when he attempted to kidnap Ms. Stinson, then he would still be behind bars. We need to be willing to serve on a jury when we are called if we want to see justice done.

I agree with you, I think you have me confused with someone else. I'd be leery of leaving my 6 year old daughter anywhere but a family's residence, withbout my supervision. I'm saying that and I don;t even have a 6 year old daughter.

This scumbag was obviously on the prowl for a victim. Any girl that look like an easy enough target could have met the same fate. This poor girl was in the wrong place, at the wrong time. My heart goes out to the family.

I agree with you. Any crime involving the slightest violence, even a purse snatching or a shoving, should weigh more against a person's future threat to society than a drug possession or under the influence charge.

People who have substance abuse problems are not likely to go out and abduct children and kill them. No one knew what evil this father of three little girls was going to do. Who would have thought it?

Well he was charged but aquitted of trying to take a woman in her 20's a few years ago. We don't know if he had attempted to abduct others and they just never reported it.

I hope the Judge catches some trouble for not putting him back in jail at the probation officer's request. But at the rate we're going with our judges in Fl, that'll be a cold day in ....

Lay off the mom. She is going through hell and would benefit more from your prayers than your judgement. There is no one to blame here but the evil man who killed her.

Hi!

It's been reported that Carlie's parents were waiting for her to CALL them to pick her up. She wasn't supposed to walk home.

When she took it upon herself to walk home, the Mother of her friend, called Carlie's house and told her stepfather that Carlie had left and was walking home and that she was concerned about it.

It was because of this call, her stepfather immediately went out to find her.

We know the rest.
