SANAA, Yemen, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A purported statement by al-Qaida in Yemen warned Saturday of a "major strike" soon in the United States.

The statement, distributed by the Yemeni Tagamoo Party for Reforms, said: "A major strike, a big event will take place in America soon," reminiscent of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Interesting snippet.

>>>"Kwon testified that the exact nature of Khan's mission was never fully explained -- but that it involved gathering information, sending e-mails and spreading propoganda."<<<<

And don't forget, Anderson being caught in the Chat room.

The report being followed?

I haven't read the entire Quran in Arabic - I've read portions but never the entire thing. As with any religions, the current practice is largely directed by the interpretations of the clerics.

One of the major "selling points" that the Islamics use is the lack of a centralized leadership; in essense, Islam has no pope. (Disclaimer: the Islamic Republic of Iran has instituted a clerical hierarchy that contravenes this.)

However the absence of a legitimized hierachy, a cogent leadership to speak of, decentralizes the interpration of the doctrine. This means that anyone with enough charisma can interpret Islam and people will follow those interpretations based on the charisma of the leader rather than the rationality of the interpretation.

This is how Bin Laden has become so dangerous. He exudes charisma to his Islamic followers. To them, he is the epitome of what a good Muslim should be. So they listen. I think when all is said and done, the history books are going to show that it is not Bin Laden who is the real power behind Al Qaeda but instead is Ayman Al Zawahiri. Zawahiri has no charisma. So he aligned very early with Bin Laden. The alliance between the two has proven lethal.

Anyway, yes. The same Islam that teaches violence and jihad, tells stories of a gentle Mohamed who cut off his robe to keep from disturbing his pet cat. The same book of hadith that teaches that also authorized murder and mayhem against apostates and infidels. Lots of contradictions. So interpretation is critical.

The people I met when I was in Egypt were for the most part warm, loving people who did not wish me any harm whatsoever. I really never felt that I was in any danger from the general Egyptian population at all. It's not like the people are evil - I have wonderful memories of Cairo.

What has to happen for moderate Islam, a kinder and gentler Islam so to speak, to take hold is a leader with charisma. Right now there is no one that I see who can fulfill that role.

Our leadership needs to focus on finding a person to fill this role and nurture him. And yes, for cultural reasons it will have to be a him. The Islamic world will not follow a female, IMHO.

Getting back on topic. End of Muslim year is February 21, 2004. (I think that is 1421, but don't quote me.)

My understanding from following this thread is we still have grave concern about an attack at or before this date. Have we heard any chatter?

One thought I had today, was that any type of large strike to a City would not make much sense on a the 21st, as this is a Saturday. A terror attack, frankly, would make more sense before evening rush on a busy, busy day -- to trap more victims and create more problems.

In fact, while I have been openly skeptical about the use of WMD, such as radiological or nuclear, one would think rush hour, mid week, bad weather. This would prevent large and successful exodus from the strike zone.

Anyway, with one of the proffered dates upon us, I am just wondering if others have thoughts or have pieced together useful raw intelligence. (And who said I could not be constructive!?)

Interesting articles and images on WBAL?? about Anthrax. There are a couple of articles there arising from the latest news that a Hepatitus drug can treat anthrax. But the interesting thing is the map showing all the anthrax cases since 9-11. May be my memory has gone but I don't remember some of them; like spores found in Kansas? Maybe I try to absorb to much info and lost that one!

The number 19 is a real favorite with the terror crowd. Today is the 19th. Rush hour on the east coast is about to get underway.

Article by Mansoor Ijaz regarding Bin Laden (2 page article)

Al Qaeda's Nightmare Scenario Emerges

Does Osama bin Laden plan to become the ultimate suicide bomber?

by Mansoor Ijaz

02/19/2003 12:00:00 AM

OSAMA BIN LADEN, or some good likeness of him, spoke from the ether again on two occasions last week, releasing two undated audiotapes as Muslims completed their pilgrimages to Mecca. His call to Jihad did not stop at tying himself to Iraq's people, by which he had clearly hoped to provoke Washington into immediate unilateral military action against Saddam Hussein. Nor did it end with his messianic recitation of verses in the Koran that clearly demonstrated he knows the end game is near. Predicting his martyrdom this year, he vowed to die in "the belly of the Eagle," an Islamist reference to ending his life in a final act of terror against the United States on our soil. The man, put simply, is on the run.

Bin Laden's cowardice shines through his rhetoric. For the first time since the September 11 attacks against the United States, bin Laden demonstrated fear through his choice of words. In setting forth plans for his suicide, he probably came to the conclusion that al Qaeda's retaliation infrastructure around the world had been so effectively and systematically dismantled by western intelligence that his terrorists may not be able to mount a credible response to any planned U.S. military action in Iraq in the near future. Like many Mafia bosses before him, he appears to have decided that when the going looks tough--the poison network in Europe, for example, has been decimated by defections and confessions--it's better to exit stage left.

While bin Laden's vision of dividing the West
and driving a wedge between the United States and her.....(snipped, 2 page article)

Regarding above article. It is was written 1 year ago today, when Bin Laden first promised to martyr himself in "the belly of the eagle".
