Navy relieves submarine commander of duties Tuesday January 27, 2004 GROTON, Conn. (AP) The Navy has relieved a submarine commander of his duties, saying it lost confidence in his abilities to command.

Cmdr. David J. Bartholomew Jr. assumed command of the Jimmy Carter about a year ago. The Seawolf-class submarine is still under construction at Electric Boat in Groton.

Bartholomew would have overseen the submarine's joining the fleet in 2005.

The Navy released few details about the incident.

Commanders are typically dismissed when the ``command climate'' of a ship is threatened, said Lt. Philip R. Rosi, a Navy spokesman.

``The decisions made by Cmdr. Bartholomew led to, or could have led to, the degradation of good order and discipline,'' Rosi said.

Bartholomew was temporarily reassigned to the staff of Submarine Group Two at the base, pending further disciplinary or administrative action, Rosi said.

Bartholomew, a native of Medfield, Mass., is a 1983 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He made two demanding Mediterranean deployments as captain of the USS Annapolis.

Let me guess... the USS Jimmy Carter is an unarmed sub designed to travel the world and disparage U.S. policy?

Very strange. Bartholomew had already proven himself as skipper of USS Annapolis. It seems there has been a near epidemic of commanding officer relievings in the Navy in the past several years.

Apparently, he was running simulation drills, and ended up sinking the sub's model (from his office) in his bathtub.

Most embarrassing, he was wargaming against a Lego model of a diesel-powered North Korean sub.

Not an auspicious start.

How can you jeopardize the command climate of a boat that isn't even operational yet? What did he do, go out boozing too much?

Bartholomew, a native of Medfield, Mass.

Wow. That's only 2 towns away from where I live. Small world.

Talk about irony... He got the same treatment as Jimmy 'the peanut brain' Carter got. They both were relieved of ther duties...

The construction of the sub was turned over to Habitat for Humanity.

The boat still, even though not completed, has a crew which is involved in the construction.

I've no idea what sins of ommission or commission he's accused of though, that got him sacked.

proven himself as skipper of USS Annapolis.

But running a crew in the shipyard is a whole different deal. Miserable conditions for the crew. Sounds like his goat locker let him down.

It seems there has been a near epidemic of commanding officer relievings in the Navy in the past several years.

The Navy is under new management these days. Many officers who were fine under the former administration are finding themselves less than adequate under Rumsfeld. It is a good thing that is happening.
