Girl killed in park stunt

A 16-year-old Marysville girl died in a city park Saturday as she duplicated a movie stunt that involved a merry-go-round.

The victim, whose name was not released, died in S.J. Field Park on Rideout Way before 6 p.m., after she flew off a merry-go-round and hit her head on the street pavement, according to the Marysville Police Department.

According to witnesses, seven teenagers attached a rope to a truck and wrapped it around a merry-go-round, then watched it spin as the truck pulled the rope away from the ride. The stunt was previously performed in "Jackass: The Movie."

Sadly, that's the reason why there are so many warning labels on every thing today. Next, merry-go-rounds will have labels: Do not exceed 15 RPM. Do not attach to automobile. Do not.....

By 2020, everyone under the age of 18 will have to wear an approved helmet at all times outside of their homes.

What kind of reckless talk is that? What if someone slips in the shower, or falls down the stairs? That helmet could have saved their life.

Just to be on the safe side, you're going to want to keep a suppy of helmets (and operating instructions in all major languages) next to your front door, so that in the event of visitors (or burglars) there will be enough helmets to go around.

Actually, it sounds like the antics my husband and his 3 brothers pulled. They are all lucky to be alive!

Over the years, most of my friends and I have come to the same conclusion.

Based on today's nanny state, none of us should have lived to age 5.

Their friends are indeed quite responsible, well mannered, and joys to be around. Last night my son had about 15 friends over and they cooked on the grill. One young man provided all the meat - a deer he had killed a couple of weeks ago. My only complaint - when they all cranked up their trucks to leave - it sounded like a Flowmaster convention. :-)

I thought they had already been "outlawed". Don't think I've seen more than 1 on a playground in the last 5 years (at least) and that one hasn't been there for the last 2 years.

24 yards is pretty good. Assuming a weight of 120 for the victim, I'd love to see somebody do the math on what the rotational speed of that thing was.

Her weight shouldn't come into play -- much like a bullet fired horizontially from a gun will land on the ground at the same time one is dropped from your hand.

So figure the truck is the bullet and the speed of the bullet (Vh) is how fast the truck was going before she let go. The only other variable to consider is consider how high (H) off the ground she was when she let go.

She has two components of motion: tangenial to the merry go around (Vh, Ah = 0 where A == acceleration) and toward mean old earth (Av = 9.8m/s^2).

H = Vv * t + 1/2 * Av * t^2 where t == seconds aloft.

Since she had no downward velocity (Vv) to start off with this simplifies to H = 4.9*t^2. If the H = 1.5 meters that means she was aloft for (1.5/4.9)^0.5 = 0.55 seconds.

How far does this travel? That's D = Vh * t.

Since we know the distance of 24 yards = 9.1 meters:

9.1 meters = Velocity * 0.55 seconds

Or the velocity is 16.5 meters / s = 37 MPH

For the merry go round the velocity at an outside point is V = radius * radians / second = radius * RPM * 2*pi / 60

Pluging in 37MPH = 54 feet / second = 2 * radius * (RPM) * pi / 60 = Diameter * RPM / 19.1

Figuring a typical merry go round diameter of 10 feet that works out to be 54 ft / second = 10 ft * (RPM) / 19.1
100 revolutions per minute.

Keep in mind its been 10 years since I did anything with Excel so I could of screwed up somewhere. But 37MPH sounds about right if you have enough rope wrapped around the merry go round. Also I'm not accounting for things like wind resistance and the flailing of the individual.

If we assume a radius of 4 feet for the merry-go-round, the ejection speed of 50 feet/second corresponds to an angular rate of 12.5 radians/second, or about 120 rpm.

Phew! Looks like I did my math right.

The next step is to figure out the acceleration of the truck and how many yards of rope they needs to wrap around the merry go round.

This should be given to the friends of the victim to do. Turn that frown upside down!

The next step is to figure out the acceleration of the truck and how many yards of rope they needs to wrap around the merry go round.

If the rope was wrapped around the outside (which is likely), and the girl was hanging on near the outside of the merry-go-round, then the truck was going about as fast as the girl was -- about 35 mph.

They had a couple of ropes tied together -- figure 150 feet of rope. With a powerful truck, a stomp on the gas would get them them to 35 in 150 feet.

This amendment shall be final and/or amended only as the DNC see's fit and passed without representation into law. Votes cast in this regard shall be tabulated without question and counted towards satisfying the election of said democrat.

I'm dating myself, but back in the Eddie Murphy days of Saturday Night Live, they did a long-running sketch/series where Buckwheat was shot (I believe Alfalfa did it).

They would go around asking people that knew Alfalfa questions about his character. Kind of a "what do you think of Alfalfa?" and the person would respond "Alfalfa was a great person, real friendly and nice to the kids". It was followed by "Do you think he shot Buckwheat?" and the same person that just talked about how nice Alfalfa was, would respond "Oh yeah, I think he shot Buckwheat, that was all he ever talked about, was shooting Buckwheat". My memory is hazy, but you get the gist of it.

I've always wondered if anybody ever gave their honest opinion on these matters, like if they knew somebody was nuts or stupid, but yet when the cameras roll, they talk about how nice, smart, etc. they are.
