A man who had earlier shot at two rivals engaged in a shootout with police officers as they tried to arrest him in the Bronx on Thursday night.

Police said Dionisio Mercado, 40, shot at but missed a group of men who were standing in front of 2780 Grand Concourse just after 8 p.m. Thursday. Police said it is believed the shooting stemmed from a drug-related dispute.

At 10 p.m. Mercado spotted one of the men who had been in the group and shot at him, missing again. That man called police and gave them a description of Mercado's car.

Police stopped the car about 10:30 p.m. on Mosholu Parkway near Van Cortlandt Park. When they approached Mercado, he shot at them, police said. Several officers responded by firing about 20 shots at Mercado, all missing. Mercado drove off and crashed into one police car blocking his way. Two officers in that car sustained minor injuries.

Officers gave chase but lost track of Mercado's car on the Henry Hudson Parkway. Mercado's car was later found parked outside Lehman College in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx. Police officers waited out of sight and arrested Mercado when he returned.

Mercado, whose address was not released, was charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon. He was awaiting arraignment Friday night in Bronx Criminal Court.

It sure shows how effective gun control is for controlling crime. It is every bit as bad as the line: "I'm from your government and I'm here to help you."

What they need is to use the Bush Safe Neighborhoods Program to warehouse the violent criminals.

From November 2002:

Teachers Protest For Better Security In NYC Schools

(New York-WABC November 22, 2002) — Violence in New York City schools has been a problem that has grown to make headlines almost daily, from students attacking teachers to them attacking each other. Well, on Friday morning, one group said enough is enough. Teachers at Norman Thomas High School spoke out, hoping their words would help create a safer environment for their colleagues. Celeste Ford reports from Kips Bay on the East Side with more.
See Photos From The Story

those seven, teachers say there are still to many violent students at the high school. They made their point with a demonstration in front of the school Friday morning.

Protesting Teachers: "Violent students must go! Hey hey, ho ho! Violent students got to go! Hey hey, ho ho! Violent students got to go! Hey hey, ho ho!..."

Roughly 70 teachers and staff rallied at Norman Thomas High School, saying they are upset over the violent climate that leaves them feeling intimidated by students. A pregnant teacher at the East 33rd Street school was recently shoved and threatened. Another teacher described to us a confrontation he experienced only Thursday, with a student who was not carrying his ID.

Kevin Bain, Teacher: "He tried to run out of the escalator bank... I started talking to him again. He got in my face. He threatened me. He was an inch from my face with his hands, threatening to get me outside. To cut me and get me outside."

Ronald Jarvis, Teacher: "It can be very tense... It can be very tense because you don't know what's on their minds. You don't know when they are going to strike you or hurt you and the students that you're with."

Teachers say the high school is overcrowded and it's layout, with 10 floors is difficult to patrol. Worst of all, they say, once violent students are removed they return soon after with the same problems.

Evelyn Velis, Teacher: "They remove them, sometimes for a couple of days, they call it detention, then the students still remains in the classroom. It... What is the purpose of that."

Yah, I'm sure they'll overturn Sullivan, and this will have the effect that the Luby's masacre did in Texas. Alls they need is a gun rights champion, huh? Yah, that's it.

Looks like NYC is going back to the good-old days of rampant crime.

Hmm, this wouldn't refer to the Mayor would it?

Shootings? Pistolwhipped? Hmmm.... I though handguns were illegal in NYC...

Maybe they are too concerned about people with ashtrays in their buildings.

Fuget about it. This is a New York diner. They are paying protection money to SOMEONE. Get real. The jabones that heisted this place will be swimming with the fishes inside of 48 hours and the folks robbed will have their money back, with some apologies, shortly thereafter.

At least that's how it would have been done in the old days.

A 17-year-old was pistol-whipped and robbed of his earrings,

I wonder if the bad guys let him take them out, or if he's now lobeless.

There's a local kid who has a pierced lip to go along with the ears...I'm told that sometimes he wears a chain looped from the lip to one ear; somebody's gonna "snag" him one of these days...

I'm pleased to report that we see very little of that piercing business here in L.A.

That would be Lower Alabama. ;-)

You know naught of which you speak.

There was CCP holder in Lubys, the management prohibited her from entering the eatery armed. So she left her handgun in the car, and consequently had to watch her mother die before her eyes, all due to the safe, "no guns allowed" rule. Which to criminals means, illegal activities by perps are AOK.

Student Keyana Stevens, 16, of the Bronx, said Jean-Pierre has a reputation for strictness. "He's chasing people all the time," she said. "Nobody likes him because he's so by-the-book."

Well, it sounds like sweet Keyana just doesn't like to obey those bothersome little rules.
