Blind people would be allowed to get handicapped parking permits even though they can't drive under a bill introduced Friday by Rep. Chuck Martin. The Alpharetta Republican defended the bill. Martin said the caretakers of blind people need to be allowed handicapped parking when escorting the blind. Parking lots are dangerous places for people who can't see cars coming, Martin said, so they should have the right to park closer to the buildings.
"It is possible that a blind person would have a car driven by their spouse or caregiver," the lawmaker said, adding that one of his constituents has just that problem.
The bill now heads to a House committee for consideration.

Well, the blind might as well be given access to handicapped parking, because I never see anyone else ever using those prime parking spaces.

Likely, we will need road signs in Braille, as well.

Just the opposite here (this is "retirement country" with tons of Q-Tip drivers)...You rarely see a handicap space empty.

And exactly why do you find it acceptable to be accommodating to the needs of those less fortunate than yourself?

Sorry, should've been:
And exactly why do you find it acceptable to be UNaccommodating to the needs of those less fortunate than yourself?

That's because drive-up ATMs and walk-up ATMs are usually the exact same model, installed differently..

This reminds me of the very effective penalty my boss proposed for repeat drunken drivers.
Blind them.

The parking lot behind the local Borders Bookstore is small, and always full. Last weekend I circuled the lot for about 15 minutes trying to find a space. Nothing...except for the four handicapped spaces right outside the store.

I may have done some things in my youth that virtually made me blind. I wonder if I can also receive an exemption.

Just the opposite here (this is "retirement country" with tons of Q-Tip drivers)...You rarely see a handicap space empty. If all of the "regular" spaces are full and there are plenty of "handicapped" spaces available, I cannot choose to use the "handicapped" space. I think the same rule should apply whan all of the "handicapped" spaces are full.

You obviously don't live in my area, then. Around here, the handicapped spaces are always in use.

Few things are as enraging as not being able to find a parking space, then seeing 15 huge, empty parking spaces right near the front door...of the gym.

Blind people would be allowed to get handicapped parking permits Hey! What about putting buzzers on stop signs? Then they'll know they are approaching one and can stop safely! [/sarcasm]

I don't think most people have a problem with the idea of handicapped parking, per se.
The problem is the ratios required.
If I go to Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart or Kroger, it's almost certain that for every handicap space taken, there are 4 or 5 which are not.

And exactly why do you find it acceptable to be UNaccommodating to the needs of those less fortunate than yourself?I have not been "UNaccomidating to the needs of those less fortunate than" myself. I have ACTUALLY treated them as equals and subjected them to having a little harmless comedy directed at them. (ala How did Helen Keller break her arm? Reading a STOP sign at 60 mph! OLD JOKE)
A general rule of civilized society is that "inferiors" should not be the butt of jokes. If you are unwilling to poke some fun at a group of people, it is bucause YOU feel that they are inferior.
