with tons of Q-Tip drivers

I've never heard this expression before -- what does it mean?

"If I go to Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart or Kroger, it's almost certain that for every handicap space taken, there are 4 or 5 which are not."

Good. Then when my mom gets there, she'll be able to park.

Although I am very sorry that you'll have to walk to the door, and I'm sure my mom is, too. It's such a chore for you. My heart is full of sadness that you can't park right in front of the store.

Handicapped parking next to the gym. That's a good one.

even though they can't drive

Many handicapped non-drivers have these permits. It's so they don't have so far to walk when they're passengers. Dropping them off doesn't work everywhere for everyone.

In other words, AP, that's a stupid comment.

Yeah...pretty funny, huh? Actually, lots of gyms also have physical therapy programs. Didn't think of that, did you? There is much in the world that you're not aware of, I'll bet.

"Does your poor old hag of a mother need 5 parking spaces? Or just one?"

Just the one you wanted to park in with your good legs. And thanks for the kind words about my 79-year-old mom. Very nice, indeed.

seriously this is a good thing. In FL the disabled permit goes with the person not the vehicle. Thus if you have an elderly or special needs person in the car you can use the permit. This is handy for mothers with children in wheelchairs.

Now if you use the tag without the designated person actually with you, then it is a $250.00 parking ticket. No court, just administrative review and they have zip authority for mercy. (iow: if you had to go to the bathroom, tough luck. You should have parke anywhere else.)

Handicap parking permits are about as easy to get as a cold.

Many people who are not handicapped use these vehicles with these permits for the convenience they afford.

This is hardly obeying the spirit of the law.

The law should state and be enforced unless a handicapped person(s), the reason which this permit was issued is on board(and there are extenuating circumstances), the right to park in such areas should not be allowed, after all it isn't the vehicle that is handicapped.

OK, since you readily admit she only needs one, which I already said I would not begrudge her, does it make her happy to see all the other empty handicapped spaces, which are mandated by the government, and paid for by the developer, who has to charge more rent, which makes prices higher, empty?

And exactly why do you find it acceptable to be UNaccommodating to the needs of those less fortunate than yourself?

I would be a little more accomodating if a little more common sense was used in making these rules. To flatly state that x% of parking spots in front of every business must be reserved in case someone sometime with a "handicap" should want to park.

Drive-up ATM's have Braille characters on the keypad.

Yup. And a friend of mine's Pontiac had braille on the radio's touch buttons.

You're making an invalid assumption (no pun intended). You assume that since you rarely (or never) see all the handicapped spaces taken they are never full. That's an erroneous assumption.

The ratios are calculated in a way that makes pretty sure there will be an available handicapped space when it is needed.

You don't like it. Tough nuts. The handicapped spaces were not designed for you at all. They are designed for those nice folks who have trouble getting around. People like WWII veterans, your mom or grandmother, and others who need a little extra consideration.

There are serious things out there to get exercized about. The number of handicapped spaces in a parking lot is not one of those serious things.

Just park your car in the lot and get over it. Let the folks who can't get around so well go first and park right by the store. It doesn't hurt you in any significant way, so what's your beef?

If you can't walk from the other parking spaces, then maybe you need a handicapped permit. If you can, you have nothing to complain about.

That's not the point, you ass. The point was Government mandated regulations that are overbearing and unnecessary.

I don't mind walking at all, but I do mind the COSTS and the INTRUSION of all those extra MANDATED spaces. In many parts, those spaces have become a joke, because any idiot can get a handicapped parking sticker with a simple note from a doctor.

What a stupid thing to say "If you don't like it. Tough!" What's the purpose of free speech, if not to speak out on things we don't like? Sounds totalitarian to me.

She's still a hag too, from the way her son acts.

Hmm...and what percentage is that? Do you know? So, let's look at a typical Walmart parking lot. It has 2-300 regular parking spaces and 5 handicapped ones. Doesn't seem that much of a problem to me.
