WASHINGTON (AdAge.com) -- Viacom's CBS today rejected a request from liberal group MoveOn to air a 30-second anti-President Bush ad during the Super Bowl, saying the spot violated the network's policy against running issue advocacy advertising.
Network policy A CBS spokesman said the decision against broadcasting the spot had nothing to do with either the Super Bowl or the ad's specific issue but was because the network has had a long-term policy not to air issue ads anywhere on the network.
A MoveOn spokesperson said the group hopes to appeal the decision within CBS.
Produced as a personal project by Charlie Fisher, creative director of the Copenhagen, Denmark, office of Publicis Groupe ad agency Leo Burnett, the spot is critical of the Bush administration's fiscal policies.
Anti-Bush contest MoveOn is airing a 60-second version the commercial, which was selected through a contest calling for anti-Bush ads, in advance of President Bush's State of the Union address Jan. 20. The group has purchased $300,000 worth of air time on Time Warner's CNN that starts Jan. 17 and runs through Jan. 21.

Over at the DUmp, their talkin' "boycott!" and trashing that Right Wing, Fox News wannabe CBS outfit. It'll be interesting to see if the rest of the media (in particular the NY Slimes) pick this up and start howling about "chill winds" and "right wing censorship."

There's nothing wrong with the content, however, those who would run it would have absolutely no problem with spending except when a Republican does it. Okay, I suppose you can characterize the supporters of MoveOn.org as wanna-be big spenders. Although to be fair, that's not synonymous with wanting to run big deficits, since they'd be happy to raise taxes as much as possible to cover their spending with more revenue. (Even though raising tax rates is likely to actually depress revenues, but liberals don't know that; they'll point to Clinton's big tax hikes, and the eventual budget surplus five or six years later, to attempt to justify their anti-deficit credentials.)
But if the Democrats are wanna-be big spenders, Bush and the Republican Congress are real here-and-now giant spenders. From farm subsidies to federal education spending (whatever happened to "abolishing the Education Department"?) to prescription drug entitlements to Mars missions, the Republicans appear intent on replacing Democrats as the principle promoters of Big Government.
So the MoveOn.org ad is absolutely accurate and justified. If it hurts President Bush politically, well, he deserves to take the hit.

I bet if CBS refused to run an NRA ad against a Democrat President, all the people who are lauding CBS would be cursing them.
I'd like to see more issue/attack ads from groups across the spectrum. Maybe it would shake up the One Party, Dempublican system we have now.
George Bush is a conservative. Yeah, right. But because he's marginally better than a Democrat, we must all line up behind him and stifle all dissent. Hmmmm, sounds like how the Dems behaved with Clinton.

Yo! Don't make the assumption they can't go together!
I'll have you know my local sushi monger is a (legal) Korean emigre who's been here 25 years, and has a great family (wife and some of the kids work at the shop). This guy took the time out to go to chaplain boot camp last year, as he had volunteered and was ready to go to Iraq. The Army ended up telling him they didn't need him to go. The family was running the business in his absence. We liked the guy before, we love him now.
He always has a game on the TV at the sushi bar, baseball in summer, football in the Fall/Winter.

I think something needs to be done about foreign investment in US politics, even if through US based "front groups". Seems to me this is dangerous for the republic. If a consortium of foriegn interests, for example Arab countries, were to invest in attacking, say GW in 2004, through hundreds of millions of dollars in political advertising, the outcome of the election most certainly could be affected. I am opposed to CFR for US citizens but IMO foriegn money should be kept out of US politics.

See Meek's number 81.
I'm having one awful time remembering Meek's new name, aren't you? I go to ping him, and it takes me one or two tries to get it right.

I don't think CBS has the juevos to run the ad, much as they might like to see GWB trashed during the super bowl.
