[history]
Diners who are partial to salmon should avoid most farm-raised varieties, which often contain dangerous levels of cancer-causing contaminants, according to a major new international study that compared commercially bred salmon with their wild counterparts.
The orange-fleshed fish can harbor so many toxic substances that salmon eaters in the San Francisco area should ration their intake to one eight-ounce farmed salmon steak every two months, the researchers found. The two-year study, published today in the journal Science, found that farm-raised salmon has about 10 times the level of environmental toxins of wild fish -- largely because the farmed variety are fed other fish harvested from waters close to sources of industrial runoff.

I buy mine at Costco. $3.99 per pound, fresh, no bones, tastes great!

Here in Florida, Albertson's oftem has salmon or , even better, steelhead, for $3.99 per pound. And that is fillets, too.
But watch out for their $1.99 salmon as those I got were chum salmon. And in Alaska those are called dog salmon because that is sled dog food.
Admittedly, it is still OK, but not as good as the steelhead.

But nobody's going to talk me out of eating fish, shrimp, oysters and gumbo. They can try until they're blue in the face. It won't work. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.......however, you may pay more to get your fish, shrimp, oysters and gumbo.
The PEW Salmon Study PDF.
I have some simple questions.
What are the contaminants?
How bad are they?
How do contaminants get into the fish?
What are the contaminant levels between the fish?
Does Pew support farmed fishing?
The best farmed fish is in Chile and you get this report.
Chile fish farmers oppose Noranda aluminumn project.

Is there anything the food police says I can eat? Wasn't water carcinogenic a few years ago? Eat, drink, and be merry. We're all going to die eventually...even the assholes who research this crap.

It's easy to smoke fish and other meats -- it just takes a little time. If you like smoked salmon you save a lot of money doing it yourself. I buy my salmon from COSTCO when I don't have any fresh-caught. Google "Luhr Jensen" and check out the Little Chief Smoker. I've used mine for over 20 years.

I read somewhere that a few toxins are good for you. Seems they equate it to pouring weed killer on a weed in an amount which was not sufficient to kill it. The weed grows bigger and stronger.
I've seen that effect in the yard myself. However, as I eventually succeeded in terminating the weed by what ever means and force necessary, I have no idea how long the super weed would have lived with the enhancing toxins.
I would appreciate it if all super salmon eaters would post on a weekly interval with all their personal statistics. That way, on demise, we could have a completed study of the Salmon situation

Here in Florida, Albertson's oftem has salmon or , even better, steelhead, for $3.99 per pound. And that is fillets, too. We get steelhead here on the west coast also, and it is far superior to salmon.
Steelead is also the best fresh water game fish on the coast, when spawing. Difficult to hook but well worth the effort.

Reuters - Chile Salmon Farmers Say US - Bound Fish Safe"...The PCBs found in salmon cultivated in North and South America were 80 times lower than the allowable level set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration..."
"... the sample used by researchers at the University of Indiana were obtained two years ago and the industry has improved its feeding methods since then. "...The industry has made constant efforts to reduce the presence of PCBs, which is reflected in a reduction, according to the FDA, of 28 percent between 1998 and 2001..."
Norway refutes doubts cast on salmon
"...Salmon tested was raw with its skin intact. Once the skin is removed and the salmon warmed up, the researchers conceded, the quantities of high-risk substances were considerably diminished..."
"...levels of potentially dangerous substances lay well within guidelines set by both the European Union and the World Health Organization for what was safe to eat..."
FDA: Something's fishy about study finding farmed salmon dangerous
"...The Food and Drug Administration insisted that the levels of pollutants in farm-raised salmon are too low for serious concern..."
"...the study tested salmon raw, with the skin on. Removing the skin and grilling it removes a significant amount of PCBs, dioxins and other pollutants stored in fish fat, the FDA noted..."

I live on the upper Yukon and most people have their fish camps with set nets or fish wheels. Last summer the king run was pretty good. Had friends getting 35 kings a day out of fish wheel basket. People around here live on salmon.
It use to be a commercial seasonal activity, but the feds shut it all about down. Now only can fish for a few days; but everyone gets more than they need to freeze, smoke, and dry for their dogs; under subsistence regs.
NOw if we only had the processors flying fish out from the villages, there would be economic activity rather than welfare.
