A revised House Bill 12 was passed by the General Assembly today, and Governor Taft's spokesperson told reporters that he has no objections to the legislation, and plans to sign it as soon as it reaches his desk. The Senate voted 25-8 and the House 69-24. The compromise bill includes a provision allowing the media access to records of license-holders. Ohioans For Concealed Carry, the OFCC PAC, the National Rifle Association and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms have been working for this day for many years.

FINALLY! After years of being ignored by the General Assembly, lectured by the Ohio Supreme Court, and twice shafted by Gov. Shaft himself, CCW will be a reality in Ohio.

Sounds like good news -- congratulations to everyone in Ohio who made this happen! It's nice when the forces of good and freedom notch up a victory.
As a Hoosier, I'm looking forward to seeing the fine print about who can carry, and where.

So how do we stand on the 50 state CCW map now?

Offhand, I think DC(total ban), Illinois, Kansas, Wisconsin are the last no carry areas. Jersey, Hawaii, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maryland, California, and Connecticutt are I think "May issue". Rest are shall issue
I won't swear to that.

And how many have reciprocity? I know you can pretty much travel the South and still be legal while armed with your home state permit in hand.

Oops! Don't forget about Nebraska... We are still trying. Maybe when a certain "filibustering" senator retires LB 265 or some variant of it will pass, but NOT this year. I heard someone is even trying to get people here to sign a petition to add it to the election as a "vote by the people" issure versus a "senate lawmaker" issue. All I can say is "good luck!"

The compromise bill includes a provision allowing the media access to records of license-holders. Are there any restrictions on the use of this information?
In other states, newspapers have requested the information (under open record laws) and published them. Unless the media is restricted to using the information for research that doesn't identify a CHL holder, there's effectively no privacy for CHL holders.

New Jersey might be a "may issue" state but "may issue when pigs fly" is more like it. The place is a liberal toilet. You don't want to be there.

Let me be among the first to congratulate you.
Of course, you may expect a lawsuit at any moment. Begin raising funds NOW!
We are still defending our (as-yet-unimplemented) CCW law here in MO from such a lawsuit. It's costing many tens of thousands of dollars.
In good news, the New Mexico Supreme Court just denied a lawsuit that's virtually identical to ours.

Mass is may issue if you don't know someone.

Why do you think I used the quotes?
Under Michigan's old system, it depended on the county. IF you got the Sheriff(sometimes) to sign off and the Prosecutor(unlikely) to sign off, you got one. The State Police always voted no on orders from the top brass.
If you asked for a "General CPL" in Wayne County(includes Detroit), you'd be laughed out of the room.

New York is "may issue" but 1. You must first get permission from the local authorities (the NYPD in my case) to even PURCHASE or POSSESS a handgun in YOUR OWN HOME! 2. If you are lucky enough to get approved on this first issue, get to know some powerful polticians, as the only way to get a concealed carry permit from the local authorities is by your "connections." Concealed carry permits are rarely granted throughout the state, with relatives of police, politicians and those who are in good graces with the latter having a better chance than us serfs, er, "law abiding citizens." In most cases, a concealed carry permit issued in one county is not recognized by another.
Maybe the 1-1/2 hour commute from Pennsylvania is not such a bad idea after all!

Checking in from NE Ohio....
I'm not very pleased with the media access part, but at least it is a shall-issue bill. Since we are stuck with Taft for three more years, this looks like the best we are going to get.

"law dogs that don't know any better will ASK for your gun. hahahah yeah right. . . Like I'm giving that to a LEO. No thanks."What are you going to do, shoot a cop?
In Florida, we have a rule that if you're actually armed, you must notify a LEO. Once I told this to a young cop at a "traffic/DUI" holiday checkpoint and the young pup actually drew on me! Imagine MY fear, with this scared kid holding a Glock and his finger on the trigger, shakily telling me to get out of the car and screaming for his partner! Thank God, the partner was an old hand. He gently tells the kid to take his bloody finger off the trigger and reholster! The kid does so, and scurries back to his car with my license, permit and insurance info in hand, while I chat with the other guy. He asks about my "disposition" and I tell him I'm carrying a Colt Combat Commander .45 "strong-side hip." and he smiles when I use that verbiage so he asks me to gently draw aside my (then new) Banana Republic vest. HE then gently draws my weapon and clears it. The kid is frantically on the car radio and I ask what was up. The older guy casually says he's probably verifying my permit status.
See this was 1987 and the Florida permit was brand new and the young cops were literally shaking in their shoes over the prospect of an armed populace. Why? The older cop knew. He was shaking his head and softly saying: "Public Education" as they waved goodbye when they turned me loose a few moments later.
I gave the older guy my business card showing me to be an NRA Instructor and with our gun club data on the back, and invited him and his partner to our matches. The kid thought his partner was loony for even considering this idea! "Public Education," indeed.
BTW, the older cop gave me back my gun and told me to reload and reholster when I got back to my vehicle. These days they just ask to keep your hands away from the gun. Some jittery products of public education still will do the "let me draw and clear" routine and that's okay. I mean, until we're in a situation where the cops are the real enemy like what happens in Freeper Travis McGee's book "Enemies Foreign and Domestic" (I'm wearin' the T-Shirt, Travis!); it's probably not good policy to resist a cop's request with violence or in any way!
