Cleaning offices or picking fruit is an important job.
America's working poor citizens deserve a decent wage to do that work.
Instead, America's working poor are at the mercy of "elites" who want to save a few pennies on fruit, so they give those jobs to illegals.
And then they tell us they can't find Americans to do those jobs.
America's working poor have not the power to counter this propaganda--even the unions have turned their backs on America's working poor.

I think the proposals are good. I am a conservative Republican, too.

Millions you say? Wow...I haven't met even one. Sure you have. You just haven't met one wiling to do it for less than a reasonable wage which would allow them to live with less than 5 people in a household.

I hope Senator Byrd doesn't die. Maybe he will stop this like he did in 2002:
Senator Robert Byrd then brought 245(i) extension to a screeching stop by calling it amnesty and "sheer lunacy." --from the Phyllis Schlafly column 6-26-02 at
EagleForum.org.

I'm very upset about this Amnesty for Illegals. It took me SEVEN long years to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. And now suddenly all these illegals will be granted 3-year-visas and services paid for by my tax dollars. I'm disgusted. I was so happy when I became naturalized and all I was thinking about was that I can cast my vote for President Bush come November. I'm not so sure if I wanted to vote for him now.
I thought President Bush knew better.

NO.......69%
This not only rewards the MILLIONS illegals, looks like the illegal employers go "scott free" too.

That's entirely in keeping with his rewarding the terroist arafat with a state for the last three years of Jew-killing by bomb (the Intifada, 1000+ killed).

President Bush is not only attempting to reform immigraiton by legalizing the millions who are already here but doing it wisely in the economic sense.Let's open the damn floodgates while we're at it, why don't we?
I'm breaking my damn neck looking for a job; more than half of them (at least in my field) are being outsourced offshore.
Then I have to listen to a president that I'm supposed to agree with tell me that there are jobs that Americans won't do; He practically slaps American workers and employers both in the face with it. He insults our intelligence by talking about how "brave" these "undocumented workers" are. Call 'em by their actual name: ILLEGALS.
Don't piss on my leg and try to tell me that it's raining. I don't claim to be a genius, but I ain't that stupid!

**So they offer $1.34 an hour for a computer programming position and then whine that they can't find an American to do it. Bubba Bush to the rescue! **
I have two friends with sons working in the Silicon Valley doing comp programming for a whopping $100k salary. No college degree. The young men are 20 years old. If a company can find someone to do the same work for half that salary would there be programmers pounding on the door? Keep in mind the economics of the region: housing etc.

So they offer $1.34 an hour for a computer programming position and then whine that they can't find an American to do it. Bubba Bush to the rescue! That's right.
People are forgetting this does not apply only to unskilled work
American wages are going to drop through the floor
Which is the plan, of course

" You know once their "time" is up they'll simply work somewhere else off the books."
Exactly! This is already happening. I cannot fathom the naivete of some posters believing any illegals follow the rules in the first place....it's an oxymoron.

"He said this program requires these TEMPORARY workers to return to their countrywhen the work is done."
He also made it perfectly clear that they may bring family members along with them(making anchor babies ever so much more convenient). And who is going to send them back when their 3 years is up? I strongly doubt that we will have any better resources or tracking methods to send them back then.

Most second and third generation Latinos of whatever background do not speak Spanish very well if at all.
Almost everywhere I go in Latin America I can speak English with the locals. It's nice speaking Spanish but English opens the door to economic success everywhere in the New World except maybe in the former French colonies and Cuba.
First, he said no amnesty - no reward for illegally entering our country.
Second, if one is in this country illegally and want to stay they must register for a temporary worker program and must have a job.
Third, after three years the worker must go back home and then can re-apply.
Fourth, he did not offer to pay Social Security to these workers, but a system where they can get credit in their home country.
Fifth, enforcement against employers hiring anyone not in the temporary worker program will be strong.
Sixth, employers must try to hire Americans first.
What I get from this is that we will get a handle on who is here. Those here have to have a job - not stand around the convenience store looking for day labor. We will weed out criminals.
