[history]
According to Sid Rosenburg, the Sports guy on the Imus in the Morning program, the Redskins are set to make an announcement today that the former Redskins Coach will be returning to be the new head coach.
Update:
Just a week after Steve Spurrier called it quits, the Washington Redskins have a new coach their old one. Joe Gibbs agreed Wednesday to take charge of the struggling franchise. Gibbs coached the team from 1981-92, winning three Super Bowls along the way before resigning to pursue a career with his own NASCAR team. [link to source]

Gibbs will fail. He may have been a good coach 10 years ago, but the game of football has passed him by. The same thing happened to Chuch Noll in Pittsburgh. The game passed him by and he didn't leave until the he took the Steelers down with him.
How do you explain Dick Vermiel if thats the case?

I always thought that Gibbs was the one of the best ever.

Team owner Daniel Snyder made a pitch to Gibbs on Monday and he accepted the job on Tuesday and went right to work hiring Williams. The team is also interested in talking with former Oakland Raiders head coach Bill Callahan for its offensive coordinator position.
http://www.jtthebrick.com/fanclub/news/All/article.asp?team=ALL&id=42582 I still say they should get Art Monk for offensive coordinator.

Some comedian
once did a comment about
people who divorce
and then re-marry.
He observed, Yeah, because say
you take a drink from
a milk carton and
discover it's curdled, then
if you put it back
and the next morning
take a big swallow, it will
taste real good and fresh...

Here is to all you Redskins fans that have been talking about Gibbs beating the Cowboys. He was 11-12 versus the Cowboys. The only team he had a losing record to with more than 2 games played. Consider the Cowboys were under .500 from 86-90 at the end of the Landry era and the rebuilding start of Jimmy Johnson and you will wonder the why the Redskins fans think that Gibbs can beat the Cowboys? I enjoy the rivalry with the Redskins being a Cowboy fan but to be honest it hasn't been much of a rivalry lately. We have been kicking the crap out of the Redskins for the last 8 years. Even with Washington's best coach ever they were under .500 to the Cowboys. Bring back Gibbs, Thiesmen, Monk or whoever you have to find to make this rivalry a rivalry again!

"The team is also interested in talking with former Oakland Raiders head coach Bill Callahan for its offensive coordinator position." Thaty's a little worrisomeconsidering how much the Raiders' players allegedly loathed the man, but I trust Gibbs to assemble a very talented staff of coaches as he always did in the past.

The problem with yer analogy is that the Skins' performance never curdled while Gibbs was coach...MUD
BTW...the game hasn't passed Gibbs by any more than it has Vermeil or Parcells.

Everyone is enamored with the run around the field and throw wild passes everywhere quarterbacks these days, but look at most of the teams that have won the Super Bowl for the last 40 years. When you get down to it, Good solid running game, Strong Pocket Passer, smothering Defence. you put that on the field and you will win.
That's because for the first 30 or those years that's all teams did. For the last 10 or so we have begun to see the more athletic offenses with the big plays. These teams put up points and can win-- but your right, still need defense.
The NFL offense of the future will be more and more like the Vikings and Saints of now and less and less like the Redskins and Giants of yesteryear.
Speed and athleticism will trump brute strength on offense always.

Hmmmm, If Gibbs can come back, along with the likes of Vermeil, can the return of 'Da Coach', Mike Ditka, to 'Da Bears' be far behind?!?!? The job is still open and they've already interviewed the required two tokens, oops I mean black candidates. And Ditka is an 'offensive' coach (no pun intended) which 'Da Bears' are looking for.
OK I'm kidding. He himself said after the New Orleans fiasco that he can't relate to the players today and 'the game has passed him by'. As he believes in things like practicing, giving the proverbial 110% all the time, actually knowing what play is called and no 'show-boating' (oh, and NO drugs) - while the players are worried about their next endorsement, getting a pinky bruise AND 'show-boating' (I won't go into the drugs). Ya know I'd almost believe it's in NFL contracts now - you make a tackle you get to 'dance', a sack & you do two 'dances' and if you make a touchdown - WOW, you get to call in the Radio City Rockettes and put on and end zone show.
In addition I find it personally offensive that the Detroit Lions have a higher franchise value that the Chicago Bears. Thanks Michael McKaskey & family, you jerks.

If true, for his sake I hope Gibbs included a clause in his contract barring Snyder from the stadium and the practice filed, and the locker room, until the Skins win the SB..

How do 'they' calculate these things? Seriously. Do Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder have a standing 'asking price'? When you've got the audacity to refer to yourself as "America's Team", you must automatically be the most valuable.

True Parcells an Vermeil came back and did well, but then there is always Marty Schottenheimer. As a NASCAR fan I hope Joe does well comming back. He is all about winning (2 Winston Cup Championships in the last 4 years).
To: LetsRok
Tell that to Dick Vermeil that the game passed him by. Don't think Rams or Chiefs fans would agree.

George Micheals, NBC here, stated it is Joe Bugel as the Offensive Coordinator.

Even with Washington's best coach ever they were under .500 to the Cowboys. Bring back Gibbs, Thiesmen, Monk or whoever you have to find to make this rivalry a rivalry again! Yer right on that one..and it's Theisman. I only know cuz I eat at his restaurant :)
Gibb's great secret wasn't that he whupped up on the good teams..which the Cowboys were. His secret was that he almost never lost to a bad or mediocre team and played .500 with the good teams. That always got him into the playoffs.
Once he got into the playoffs his coaching ability and a little bit of good fortune carried him to the SB.

"Joe Bugel as the Offensive Coordinator." That'd be excellent...looks like a rebirth fer TheHogs!! Now all we need is a big back like Stephen Davis.

I'm assuming he would have to divest himself from his financial interests in the Atlanta Falcons ... could be interesting.

"11-12 versus the Cowboys"? I'll take it! ...in a New York second!
One of my happiest Redskin memories is Dexter Manley knocking the snot out of Danny White (Landry's QB) and then watching Def.lineman Frank Grant running the ball into the endzone and spiking the ball...thereby putting the proverbial stake in the heart ...propeling the Skins to their Superbowl win over Shula. That was Gibb's second year of coaching...and the fact that it fell in the strike shortened season made no difference to me...sort of made up for that debacle in Dallas when the Cowboys knocked the Skins out of the NFC title game and spurred Riggins "retirement".This may be ancient history to the younger crowd here...but Gibbs kept the Skins consistently in the hunt....4 Superbowl APPEARANCES...3 WINS.
