[history]
According to Sid Rosenburg, the Sports guy on the Imus in the Morning program, the Redskins are set to make an announcement today that the former Redskins Coach will be returning to be the new head coach.
Update:
Just a week after Steve Spurrier called it quits, the Washington Redskins have a new coach their old one. Joe Gibbs agreed Wednesday to take charge of the struggling franchise. Gibbs coached the team from 1981-92, winning three Super Bowls along the way before resigning to pursue a career with his own NASCAR team. [link to source]

I just was on the phone with a customer in Richmond and when he told me this I jumped out of my seat and did an involuntary happy dance.

That was my thought. I always felt that he left because he couldn't stand the previous ego-maniac owner who's name escapes me at the moment. Jack Kent Cooke. Gibbs left because he was just completely burned out. He and Cooke got along fine for years.

I didn't see the date, and was trying to figure out who Otto Graham was. That was 10 years before I was born.

I'll stand corrected, then, but only because of that new stadium.
The Cowboys are still at the top of the NFL ranking, in terms of logoed sales, which measures the popularity of a team more accurately than how many sky boxes Danny Snyder can sell to Congressmen.
But, I won't argue with you.
The Cowboys have owned the Skins for years now, anyway.

I remember after that article came out that is just for the franchise worth alone. That doesn't include the selling of Jerseys and things like that related to player sales. Once those were taken into effect it brought the Cowboys to #1. If I get a chance here at lunch today I am going to find that article that I read that in. It may have been my Cowboys Weekly paper but I will find the link and post it later today when I get a chance.

If you want to know the whole story about Joe Gibbs, read "Racing to Win: Establish Your Game Plan for Success". Gibbs tells how he was flat broke his last year as coach, and how he left the NFL to spend more time with his family.

It does not matter. Gibbs took off because he was facing FA and salary caps. Why put up with that headache when you could walk away a big fat winner? This is NOT the NFL that Gibbs left. Gibbs will not have the luxary of having three teams worth of starting o-linemen. With The Danny and his piss boy Vinny in charge, he will not have one set of starting o-linemen, nor D-linemen, nor any money under the salary cap to get them.

There are now reports in Washington that this is a done deal. One report also has it that Gibbs has already selected Greg Williams as the Defensive CoordinatorHe needs to get Art Monk as the Offensive Coordinator

This just made my new year. As a lifelong Redskins fan, it's possible I can now come out of mourning for my team.
Joe Gibbs has the reputation and the clout in the NFL to keep Snyder out of play making decisions. I don't expect to see Snyder meddling much with a team Gibbs runs.
If anyone goes back and looks at Joe Gibbs history with the Redskins, they will see his first year was a failure, after that all winning seasons. I expect the same this time around.
Next year the Skins will continually improve, if they will have a winning season I'm not sure, but the year after they will. The NFL has not passed Joe Gibbs by. A coach with the qualities and talent of Gibbbs does not fall by the wayside.
Hail to the Redskins!!!!!

It's lookin' like the question marks could come off the title.

A coach with the qualities and talent of Gibbbs does not fall by the wayside. Agree, and Vermiel proved you can go home again. But pairing the most beloved Redskin (except for maybe Jurgensen) and the most disliked (Snyder) gives me mixed feelings. I've found it hard to root for the team since the money-grubbing Snyder took over (Steinbrenner without the wins), even though I attend the games.

I don't want to jinx you here, but just from looking at the media coverage, this thing has all the makings of a done deal.
I heard about it on the radio this morning and the first thing that came to mind was Dick Vermeil. I remember when we were coach shopping in '94 after the Richie Kotite era and there was a lot of talk about Coach V making a triumphant come back. I was on the fence and was eventually swayed against him by the argument "Do you think Wilbur and Orville Wright would do a good job managing Delta Airlines?" History has proven me wrong.
I wonder how big a roll Vermeil's involvement with broadcasting from the collegiate ranks played in him still being in tune with the game (same goes for Parcells, but, of course, he was away for a much shorter period of time)? Or maybe it's something that you never loose. I can't think, off the top of my head, of a coach who left the game for 10 years, came back and realized the game had passed him by.
Personally, I think it would be a good fit, and I'm really looking forward to a new era of titanic NFC East match ups!
Best of luck, but as always, not too much luck.

"...pairing the most beloved Redskin (except for maybe Jurgensen) and the most disliked (Snyder) gives me mixed feelings" I, for one, believe Snyder's heart is in the right place, and he's apparently maintained cordial relationships with both Sonny and Gibbs. Sure, Snyder's exceptionally naive about what it takes to win in the NFL, but his utmost respect fer Gibbs will help to keep his meddling to a minimum, imho...MUD
