You know, there are an awful lot of global forces lining up against America in the early part of this century. - Iran pushing ahead with nuclear capability America is certainly the most powerful nation on earth at present, but it is starting to look more and more like Gulliver, tied down by a thousand smaller antagonists. Hard to see how America can survive intact for the next 50 years. |
Michelle's due back tomorrow morning sometime so this is probably it for me. Thanks to everyone who linked and visited, and thanks of course to Michelle for the opportunity to sit in for her. An audience like this is something a deity could really get used to.
Some farewell links for your reading pleasure. Or horror, as the case may be.
· Drudge points to the Telegraph's story about attack plans being readied for Iran. There's no way to excerpt it; every sentence is blockquote worthy. I do want to note, though, for the benefit of those who don't regularly read the British papers that the Telegraph has been all over this story for months. I don't know who its sources are or how it got them, but its coverage has been genuinely stupendous. If you haven't bookmarked it yet, do so now. Whatever ends up happening with Iran, they'll have the story first.
· Drudge also links to Dana Priest's report in WaPo on the risk of retaliatory terror attacks inside the United States.
Stratfor says the mullahs are asking for it -- almost literally. Meanwhile, the U.S. embassy in Indonesia is warning citizens of a possible terror attack in that country tomorrow.
· Though written four years ago, Theodore Dalrymple's essay "The Barbarians at the Gates of Paris" remains the most harrowing treatment of France's banlieues I've ever read.
But tonight's Sunday Times expose of the murder of Ilan Halimi gives it a run for its money:
Details follow about ritual gang rapes and lighting people on fire for sport. Note the influence of Nazi-attired "comedian" Dieudonné MBala MBala, about whom LGF has more.
· The ADL puts on its hip waders and heads down into the sewer. As it turns out, the Arab press's sensitivity to respect for religion in the context of editorial cartooning is kind of a selective thing.
Lots of evidence at the ADL website. Just keep clicking.
Via PJ Media, whose Iraq Files Project is gaining a good deal of attention worldwide, comes yet another translation of a captured Iraqi document, this time appearing on Ray Robisons site (with analysis).* This particular document, if the translation is correct, is of a memo that contains a detailed list of instructions on how Iraqi intelligence personnel should conduct themselves while visiting Afghanistan.
The memo itself is not too lengthy, and Robison provides a number of translators notes that attempt to place it in its proper strategic context.

Google has become an arm of the enemy, officially . We (the blogs) have been reporting on their complicity with terror groups for some time now. I have posted on it here and here and more on Google here. Filou of Views on World Affairs writes here; This is a news outfit? Google sees fit to qualify MURDER INC as a news source? Who died and gave these evil clowns such dangerous power? Google refuses to give news agency status to Little Green Footballs. Frankly it is one of the few news organizations providing real news. One of the few TRUTHTELLERS.
Clitorectomy: euphemism female circumcision:
In Egypt we have four and a half million spinsters. The definition of a spinster is a woman who has reached 30, without ever receiving a marriage proposal. We have a spinster problem in the Arab world, and the last thing we want is for them to be sexually aroused. Circumcision of the girls who need it makes them chaste, dignified, and pure.
From MEMRI TV via LGF, a mind-altering show from Kuwaits Al-Rai TV, featuring an Egyptian Islamic expert discussing the finer points of female genital mutilation.
Every left wing feminist should hang her head in deep, deep shame. The left has aided and abetted the most barbaric misogynists of the 20th and 21st centuries. What in Gd's name are they doing? They love ideas, hate people. Chesler said "Because feminist academics and journalists are now so heavily influenced by left ways of thinking, many now believe that speaking out against head scarves, face veils, the chador, arranged marriages, polygamy, forced pregnancies, or female genital mutilation is either "imperialist" or "crusade-ist."
So Iran is playing possum. Showing off this year's souped up, record breaking "Whale" - yawn. Sorry but I am unimpressed. If this was the level of war games, I would hardly notice. There is no doubt in my mind that the creative, brilliant, scientific, technological minds in the US and Israel would beat the living daylights out of the oppressive, morally and fiscally bankrupt regime of Iran with little to no effort.
It's the damn nukes in the hands of these savages that keeps me up at night. So yes the following would be good;
The Government is to hold secret talks with defence chiefs tomorrow to discuss possible military strikes against Iran.
A high-level meeting will take place in the Ministry of Defence at which senior defence chiefs and government officials will consider the consequences of an attack on Iran.
It is believed that an American-led attack, designed to destroy Iran's ability to develop a nuclear bomb, is "inevitable" if Teheran's leaders fail to comply with United Nations demands to freeze their uranium enrichment programme.
There are thought to be at least eight known sites within Iran involved in the production of nuclear materials, although it is generally accepted that there are many more secret installations.
Of course, all parties have denied that such a meeting took place. Uh yeah ...ok. wink
The question for me remains - why is Iran provoking the West to war? There is a very deliberate strategy in play here.

This story speaks for itself. The mainstream media will paint Israel in the most impossible, almost demonic light while tenderly, gingerly making love to killers and savages. But the following story really says it all;
On Thursday evening, an Israeli couple gave rides to three hitchhikers. One, disguised as a religious Jew, was a suicide bomber, who blew himself up in the car at the entrance to the community of Kedumim. Body parts were hurled dozens of feet. The car burned for an hour.
Unbowed, the International Herald Tribune cites a completely discredited, Jew hating study to prop up its antisemitic ravings here.
What is really at play here? A struggle as old as time.

As a counterpoint to the NBC "bigotry sting": They have to stage fraudulent news stories in order to get the images they want. And they get a complete pass from the Leftosphere. Yet people like me go out and record the most heinous behavior by lefties -- completely unstaged, raw authentic footage -- and it's dismissed by the Left as either unimportant or somehow "biased". Even when there is no manipulation or bias, we get accused of it. Leftie blogs savagely and ludicrously accused me of faking several of my notorious images (such as this one and this one), and of intentional bias in my reports (like this one). Of course I debunked their false accusations. |

Any Anerican that would consider giving one red cent to Hamas, our enemy, should be forced to read this everyday, after reciting the pledge of allegiance.
THE MEMRI REPORT
How Hamas Greeted 9/11
By STEVEN STALINSKY
Hamas praised the killing of thousands of Americans in the attacks of September 11, 2001, while saying Muslims could not have been involved a similar response to those of other groups in the Middle East. Now that Hamas is running the Palestinian Authority, it is worth taking a second look at the terrorist organizations official press outlets coverage of the attacks.
Allah has answered our prayers, Dr. Atallah Abu Al-Subh wrote in an open letter titled To America, which appeared September 13,2001, in the Hamas mouthpiece Al-Risala. The Hamas publication also directed messages to high-ranking members of the Bush administration:
Every time Dick Cheney and his girlfriend Condoleezza Rice admonish us [and] gloat at our misfortune, they incite more [violence against us]! We stand in line and beg Allah to give you to drink from the cup of humiliation and behold, heaven has answere. America, you planted in the hearts of all men the seedling of hatred of you! You never considered that the day would come when the saplings would grow and put out your eyes at the top of the World Trade Center ...Those saplings grew and spread and struck at the liver of the Pentagon. ... Dont you see that thorns have reached the eyes of your strong Secretary of Defense, Rumsfeld, who thought that he was too strong to be hurt by the thorns of vengeance Perhaps you realize, after Rumsfeld fled, that he is only an ordinary man, Al-Risala contributors wrote shortly after the attacks.
The Jews infiltrated the American Army, particularly the Air Force and they pressured pilots to take the planes, knowing that religion is not denoted in the identity cards of those joining the American military. Accordingly the airplanes were [controlled] by the Jews. Why is Bush ignoring these facts. Dont act like you dont know who is behind the recent events a Hamas activist, Yussef Al-Azam, wrote in a Hamas newspaper, Al-Sabil, on October 4, 2001.
Should I greet you [anthrax], or should I curse you I will begin by saying: Oh Anthrax you have sown horror in the heart of the lady of arrogance you have entered the most fortified of places; [you have entered] the White House and they left it like horrified mice, a November 1, 2001, editorial in Al-Risala headlined, To Anthrax, said. The letter also belittled the American military and concluded by blessing the attacks on America:
How much hatred has [America] stockpiled. Were the eradication of its Marines in Lebanon, the destruction of its military headquarters at Khobar in Saudi Arabia, the destruction of the USS Cole in Yemen, the bombing of its embassies in Zambia [sic] and in Kenya, and the attacks on its soldiers in the Gulf not sufficient? The U.S. should have learned the lessons of history Today, the U.S. has treated the bitter harvest it sowed in the hearts of millions. Today, we ask: After this, will the U.S. [continue to] think that it is above the law? the editor of Al-Risala, Dr. Ghazi Hamad, said in justification of the attacks days after September 11, 2001.
Some of the most vulgar responses to the attacks of September 11, 2001, were the celebrations in the Palestinian streets, including shouts of joy by women. Hamas reaction to the attacks was equally as disturbing yet not really shocking.

Folks,
This morning, there were some horrific reports and pictures of an upsurge in violence on the streets of Paris - the usual "youths" and "students."
I know that many of us think France is circling the drain pretty darned fast, and that it's entirely possible that much of the rest of "Old Europe" isn't far behind.
There is one Eastern European author, though, who "gets it" and is very, very knowledgeable about Islam. The problem is so worrisome to her that, in view of the ever increasing frequency and intensity of the violence in France, she has written a very compelling novel called "Hatred of the Angels."
Because of the level of PC in Europe, she has been unable to find a publisher. We thought her vision of the future was so important, so educational, that we offered to publish it chapter at a time, about once a month, over at 6thCAJ. So far, three chapters have been published, with about nine to go. The titles of all of them are listed.
I've been reading the online novel as it is published. Another fascinating novel is Jean Raspall's Camp of the Saints. Sadly, both will leave you disillusioned with the future if there is not a radical shift in Western leadership to defend Western civilization.
***update: NBC official confirms that Dateline is working on the story...see below..Little Green Footballs sheds light on Tarek El-Messidi, Tennessee-based Muslim activist and purported author of the e-mail solicitation detailing Dateline's wishes; LGF also has details on a similar media sting operation by Czech TV...***
Mailbox is filling up with reaction to my blog post this morning about NBC's Dateline show and its apparent Nascar fans-must-be-racist sting.
A sample:
Reader Joanthan M. calls for "An Army of NASCAR Davids" (meme nod to Glenn Reynolds):
Just had a thought I wanted to share - what a great opportunity NBC's news creation can provide to the blogosphere!. If word gets out to NASCAR fans (perhaps in part via your blog) that 1) NBC is trying to paint them as ignorant bigots, 2) they should be extra-super-duper nice to Muslims at the Apr. 8 race, and 3) they should bring their handheld video cameras to tape NBC taping them so that when NBC can't find any bigotry to air, they can expose Dateline as the one possessed with bigotry, of the anti-red stater race fan variety, that is.
E.L. Core's message to Dateline:
440pm EST update: Just received this forwarded e-mail from the nationally syndicated Lars Larson radio show, which contacted NBC official Jenny Tartikoff and invited her or someone from NBC on to talk about the network's, uh, news-gathering methods:
Glenn Reynolds quips: "If they air the show, I want to see the raw, unedited tape."
ERIC MCERLAIN POINTS OUT something that hadn't occurred to me: And reader Eric Hall offers a new assignment: "Dateline NBC ought to take some Christian-looking people to Riyadh and see how things work out. Don't forget the bikini-clad sister."
Blogger Chad Evans caught a hilarious error in NBC's sting operations:
Dateline NBC is apparently trying to set up a sting, asking Muslim males to go to sporting events such as NASCAR accompanied by NBCs hidden cameras so they can film all the gawking bigots. Michelle Malkin has the story: NBC: Staging the News Again?
ARNOLD KLING ON fear of confrontation: "Unfortunately, large segments of American society no longer have the ability to confront real evil. People lack the confidence and moral clarity to stand up to intimidation. . . . One can view Islamic militants as armed versions of unruly teenagers. We should not feel guilty toward them. We should demand reasonable and decent behavior from them, rather than excuse their tantrums or their crimes."
That would require thinking of ourselves as adults, which is unacceptable to many. On his Instapundit blog, fellow TCS contributor Glenn Reynolds has pointed out the way in which the recent cartoon controversy illustrates that the West allows itself to be bullied by Islamic militants. The cartoons depicting Mohammed may offend Muslims, but they do not threaten Muslims or incite violence against Muslims. Still, because of violent Muslim protest of the cartoons, our supposedly staunch free press has refrained from publishing them. As the writer Stephen Green put it, "We've seen what American bookstores and publications and universities do when confronted with real fascists: they knuckle under."

Michelle Malkin reports that NASCAR is not pleased with NBC News attempt to stage an anti-Muslim news event: link: 111 comments
Michelle Malkin had a scoop yesterday: NBC's Dateline program put out a call for Muslims--but only those who "look Muslim"--to parade around at a NASCAR event, hoping to draw a hostile reaction from red-state "bigots" that NBC could film. So Dateline wanted to stage a fake news story intended to discredit NASCAR fans (i.e., conservatives) by catching them in the act of bigotry.
Michelle has follow-ups here, here, and here. The latest is that the Associated Press has picked up Michelle's story, and NASCAR has responded: What do you think the chances are that they'll show this video of American soldiers distributing Toys for Tots to Muslim Iraqi kids?
NASCAR has responded to NBC. They're not happy. NBC has apparently already been trawling their ringers around racing fans without managing to produce any untoward events.
You really need to do a better job of manufacturing your fake news, NBC. I want them to send undercover journalists to Mecca during Ramadan disguised as a mixed party of Orthodox Jews, Evangelical Christians, and Hare Krishnas.

"Ever since September 11, the subtext of this war could be summed up as something like, Suburban Jason, with his iPod, godlessness, and earring, loves to live too much to die, while Ali, raised as the 11th son of an impoverished but devout street-sweeper in Damascus, loves death too much to live. The Iranians, like bin Laden, promulgate this mythical antithesis, which, like all caricatures, has elements of truth in it. But what the Iranians, like the al Qaedists, do not fully fathom, is that Jason, upon concluding that he would lose not only his iPod and earring, but his entire family and suburb as well, is capable of conjuring up things far more frightening than anything in the 8th-century brain of Mr. Ahmadinejad. Unfortunately, the barbarity of the nightmares at Antietam, Verdun, Dresden, and Hiroshima prove that well enough." link: 74 comments

I haven't been one to invest all that much into the notion that Europe is destined, by demographics or lack of will, to succumb to an on-rushing Muslim wave. It all seems a touch over-wrought to me. It's still interesting as all get-out to read about, though. I imagine that the gentle readers of Maclean's will be somewhat surprised to read what Mark Steyn has to say in this book review, for example: "The only question about Europe is whether it's going to be (a) catastrophically bad or (b) apocalyptically bad, as in head for the hills, here come the Four Horsemen..." On a related note, this little piece, by writer Dan Simmons, is, for those who enjoy a touch of the sci-fi, well worth your time. Comments (6)

Why this doesn't matter I'll never know. Why Bush had to fight to get the Iraqi war story told to the American people is the great untold story of the "gotta fake a leak" media treachery (and it is still untold.) Nothing short of a complete distortion of the facts. The media is the de facto public relations arm of the Democratic party.

Mark Helprin contemplates a road ahead: ". . . with an intermediate range strategic nuclear capacity [Iran] could deter American intervention, reign over the Gulf, further separate Europe from American Middle East policy, correct a nuclear imbalance with Pakistan, lead and perhaps unify the Islamic world, and thus create the chance to end Western dominance of the Middle East, and, with a single shot, destroy Israel." It makes me wonder if the Mainstream Media is pro-terrorist because it's so incredibly naive and stupid, or if the Mainstream Media is so deeply in bed with the terrorists that it's just playing dumb on matters like this. |
Our friend Diana West writes the following in response to my post about her column comparing the Islamic concept of dhimmitude to the attitude of many illegal immigrants in this country: The similarities that really hit home for me lie in the attitudes of the host cultures: Europe and the US. Both are being irreversibly transformed by demographic changes wrought by influxes of peoples, legal and illegal, who are not going to assimilate in such a way as to perpetuate the culture as it exists--existed. But in both Europe and the US it is verboten to notice, discuss, debate, and certainly oppose this epochal--irreversible (Europe) or soon to be (US)--turning point in the history of mankind.
Now that we have established the translation of the memo from the Iraqi Air Force general to all units requesting volunteers for suicide missions against American "interests", the timing of the memo appears to fit into a disturbing sequence in the months prior to 9/11. This memo is dated March 17, 2001, In a series of posts I wrote last year, I pointed out activity in Germany by the Iraqi Intelligence Service that the 9/11 Commission missed. Specifically, the Germans arrested two IIS agents in late February for their operation of an espionage ring in their country. In the winter of 2001, however, those agents had operated in Germany at the same time as Mohammed Atta met Ramzi Binalshibh in Berlin, As I asked in my Weekly Standard column last year, why would the main terror cell risk traveling abroad eight months before the attack? Once again, let's review why the 9/11 Commission reached their conclusion: Comments (7) |
Investors Business Daily provides a good, albeit not exhaustive, summary of what we've learned so far from the Iraqi documents...These documents make it even plainer who our enemies are and why we're at war. The administration should move to get out accurate translations so Americans can better understand why we fight.
This one document demonstrates that had we not acted to topple Saddam Hussein, he would have acted to kill Americans around the world. Read the whole thing and use the links here:

That loathesome dirtbag Sy Hersh has apparently written a hysterical piece about how the Bush administration is planning on using nuclear bunker busters on Iranian nuclear facilities. Naturally, all the sources are anonymous "senior intelligence officals" and the story fits with the MSM's meta-narrative that the Bush administration is messianic, incompetent, and dismissive of any council outside Bush's "bubble". |

Your scenario is flawed. In fact, it is idiotic.

CQ reader Sapper sends along a new document from the captured files of the Saddam Hussein regime, one that had just been released on Friday, that has notations indicating where WMD stockpiles might be found. The information on the memo has not been translated but the notations themselves sound breathtaking: In case the DoD website gets slow, I've also uploaded the document to my server here. A few days ago, I posted a translation of a document culled from the captured Iraqi documents that the US found during Operation Iraqi Freedom. This particular memo, dated March 17, 2001, comes from a brigadier general in the Iraqi Air Force and requests a list of volunteers from all units under his command for suicide attackers. The memo explicitly explains the targets for these terrorist attacks, as the original translation from Joseph Shahda shows: When I posted this document, readers of this blog questioned the accuracy of the translation. People know that Joseph translated this for Free Republic, a strongly pro-war website, and that it was distributed by Laurie Mylroie, another pro-war commentator. Skeptics felt that this pedigree lent itself to a possibly warped interpretation of the memo. I found a translation service, Language 123, that employs a number of translators who work as free agents. The first translator, Nabil Bouitieh, works in the UK as a full-time translator for several government services. He has language certificates from Karl Marx University in Dresden, the German Cultural Center in Damascus, a degree in translation from Polytechnic of Central London, and a Masters of Diplomatic Studies from the Diplomatic Academy of London. Separately, I also hired Hamania H, who works from Damascus.
Neither of them knew that I had asked the other to translate the document. I split out page 6 from the original PDF and sent it to both along with payment. They both returned their translations today, and their results make it clear that Joseph Shahda had it right all along. First, we have Nabil Bouitieh: Now here's the translation of the same passage from Hamania H:
UPDATE: Why "case closed"? Because this shows that Saddam had recruited suicide bombers to attack American interests -- showing that destroying Saddam's regime is an integral part of the war on terror, not a distraction.
What else could this memo mean? I look at the timing of this recruitment drive in this post.

Saddam's Past Terrorism Connections Have Future Consequences
A U.S. House oversight subcommittee conducts the first public hearing today on the lessons gleaned from the first review of the vast storehouse of Saddam's intelligence documents. They will hear today from two military officers involved in the preparation of the Iraq Perspectives Project (see my post on it earlier) and from an official of the Director of National Intelligence, and Congressmen will also discuss the release of documents by the U.S. Army Foreign Military Studies Office at Ft. Leavenworth, which has been the subject of numerous articles and columns. The skepticism in official IC circles with respect to the value of these documents remains, but we should recall that (a) committed and careful terrorists not only don't die, but they never fade away either; and (b) the IC, including the FBI, missed the use of U.S.-based Islamic charities in the 1980s and 1990s to fund Islamic terrorism.
