I sat between this incredible guy who had been on death row for eighteen years before being freed by the Innocence Project at Medill Journalism school (the winner of this year’s $100K Puffin/Nation prize) and Joe Wilson, winner of this year’s Ron Ridenhour prize. I asked Joe why Powell had turned out to be such a wimp—failing to use any of his prized credibility to put the breaks on his lying colleagues, and instead telling all those falsehoods at the UN and convincing a boatload of gullible reporters of a whole mess of stuff that just ain’t so. Wilson—whose speech repeatedly termed the members of the administration to be "fu**cking assholes and thugs" said he had no idea.

This is a snippet for Alterman's column today. This is the clown who was whining that his wife was "outed" as a CIA agent by the White House, and claims that the "Saddam getting uranium from Africa" stories were a false pretext to go to war.

To be fair, "Joe Wilson" is a common name, so to make sure:

1. Do you mean the "Joe Wilson" who was married to a French diplomat for 12 years?

2. Do you mean the "Joe Wilson" who verified the Niger government was innocent of UN sanctions busting while he was also soliciting a gold mining concession from the same Niger government?

3. Do you mean the "Joe Wilson" who doesn't believe a French mining company based in Niger wouldn't sell uranium to Iraq?

That "Joe Wilson?"

The Vanity Fair article gives some interesting leads on Wilson, once you cut through the author's deflections about "conservative critics."

Like his second wife being a French diplomat ("cultural counselor" was her title), Wilson's gold mine dealings with Niger, his lame findings,

I wonder if his "trip" to Niger was pre-planned - he was going there anyway for business with the Niger government. Covering up for Niger on the Iraq angle would certainly gain him brownie points and money.

The article also mentioned Saudi and Rock Creek Corporation.

The article is awfully quiet about his role as a Kerry advisor.
