RINOs are the bottom of the barrel - yes much worse than the most liberal leftest democrat. Why? Because at least with the democrats I know my enemy and my enemy knows me. With these two faced RINOs like McCain and for the most part Bush we have to fight them tooth and nail over the liberal social policies. Giving illegal aliens benefits in this country will be it for me - if Bush pushes this through then Im done. No more donations, no more volunteering - nothing. This is it we have got to take a stand for something - he has given away pretty much everything - bowed to the racist on affirmative action, increased federal spending for senior citizens, pushed to have our free speech destroyed in campaign finance reform. This guy, except for his stance with Iraq, is the biggest liberal since Carter. In fact I thought I would never say this but Clinton was more conservative than Bush.

I really hate seeing the man being attacked, but I have to tell you, I am SO DISGUSTED with the stand he takes on illegals that nothing else matters.

First, let me put my cards on the table. Bush's signature on this steaming turd was a mistake. I know why he did it, however. Had he vetoed it, McCain would have screamed bloody murder, declared himself an independent, and would have caucused with Daschle. You folks are forgetting that Daschle had turned Jeffords. It would have been easy for him to flip McCain.

That said, those of you who wish to stand by principle come what may forget everything Ronald Reagan tried to teach you. Reagan understood when to compromise. Barry Goldwater didn't . Reagan never lost an election. Barry Goldwater got creamed in the only election that counted.

Principle can only be advanced through a two-steps forward, one step back approach. It is a long hard slog, sort of like a Supreme Court nomination fight. My way or the highway won't win the cultural battle on gun rights, abortion, or any of the other social issues. You don't like this? Get your reps to start reforming the law. It's how things are done.

Well said.

Either because Karl Rove told him to or because he truly believes that power should be in the hands of a few rich and powerful elite. Either way makes me very uncomfortable.

Compromise only works if both sides get something good once in awhile. One sided compromise is capitulation.

Jim the fight is already lost. At this time the Left is just fine tuning the terms of surrender.

Chris, you hit the bullseye with your #21. I think it's worth coming around again:

"If the Republican Party wishes to keep its base and avoid defections, it had better get its communications apparatus started and begin addressing issues like illegal immigration and massive entitlements."

Very true. But they gotta have power in order to reform as well. It's definately a communication issue, but I think that we have a lot of good communicators for Bush already out there too.

Rush isn't backing a third party conservative over Bush and neither is Hannity.

I think that is the communication lines for conservatives is these guys. Bush does need to talk more to the people but I can't blame his for not doing so through a liberal propoganda outlet. I have no doubt that if we give him a mandate and marginalize the dims in the senate that you will see a greater shift to the right.

Rush isn't backing a third party conservative over Bush and neither is Hannity. I think that is the communication lines for conservatives is these guys.

If that is the case, then the message isn't getting out to anyone other than the dittoheads -or- people who will listen to the dittoheads parrotting.

I don't listen to Rush; he doesn't fit my schedule. Same with Hannity. Besides, I find Rush to be too liberal for my tastes...

So, if talk radio is the only communications outlet, the message is DOA to those who really need to hear it.

If you figure that 20% of the people are hard-core partisans on either side of the aisle, that leaves 80% who really need to hear the message and have it presented in an easy-to-follow style.

But they gotta have power in order to reform as well.

This is true, but one does not reform by expansion hoping to shrink at a later point. That is a ridiculous and dangerous strategy with a very strong probability of failure.

At this point, likely, the only way to truly reform the system is seeming to be crashing it entirely. Depression II would likely wipe out all the social programs because with the existing debt, there would be simply no way to fund any form of massive deficit spending. Likewise, no way to fund a war to attempt to drag the economy out of it.

Now, I don't recommend crashing the economy just to prove a point, but it seems both parties are complicit in the looting of the American Taxpayer and ignoring our Constitution. It is no wonder the public is disinterested in politics and views most politicians with utter contempt.

I don't know what to do to reform the system that will work, however, so I have to play the "wait and see" game and look at every single issue and every single candidate on their merits and place support to those efforts and persons who wish to shrink Government and return to traditional Constitutional rule.

We have gone from the Rule of Law to the Rule of Men. History shows a fall is not too far in the future from that. I refuse to accept that outcome so I fight it. It may be futile, but I can tell my children that their old man gave it his best.

they say that sometimes addicts have to "hit bottom" before they make the changes needed to climb out.

I've always thought that way too, until it was pointed out that the (myth) of "hitting bottom" first, can be death, and in many cases, we have seen that it has proven to be true.

I am hoping that the collective "hitting bottom" that may have to happen isn't fatal. I have my reasons why I think that whatever happens in terms of (take your pick) war, terrorist whackos, economic FUBARism, social chaos, etc - will ultimately result in a healthier situation. For those that are left.

And it is not because I think Jesus is coming. I'm not saying he isn't, but that isn't my "belief system".

Speaking in terms of yoga philosophy or Buddhism, attachments to the world lead to suffering. I consider that society as a whole has too many attachments (addictions?) to things that are not only unnecessary but downright vicious or harmful. On many different levels, personal and social.

Some examples of unnecessary or harmful attachments could be the porn industry, Hollywood phantasmagoria, hateful excessive taxation, a lot of "ideas" about how the government should be run or what its responsibilities are, the concept that personal gratification trumps personal responsibility, etc etc.

...little j......

I like your list of "addictions".....to which one might add....

faith in "definitive" cliches that merely serve to put blinders on our perceptions, and force us to see the world as a "total good" vs. a "total evil."...thusly relieving ourselves from real responsibility and the need for real sensitivity within our understanding.

the reliance on the concept of "authoritative leader".....(or now, with more sterility..."elected official"), who, if "of the good"...shall bring about FOR US the life we want to lead.

the GAME........reality can be seen as a game , with "winners" and "losers"....(who, when they have lost, even if they were not playing and even denounce the game, are now "whinners")

the addiction to "historiocity"......the numbing down , dumbing down of our immdeiate involvement with eachother by the submergence of our SELVES into the "grand war" ..."the big story"....necessitating, of course, the Major Concepts.........over-blown and in ridiculous attire,.....which allow us to be spectators instead of human actors on the earth, our home.

these, and many more
