Learn How Americans Use Frequent Flyer Miles to Support Our Troops

The Troops Need Your Help

Latest News: The Congressional Research Office has released a memo stating that the $55 million dollars authorized to pay for soldiers' travel during R & R leave is inadequate.   Memo   Press Release

Congressman Ruppersberger and soldiers
waiting for flights at BWI airport.

In September 2003, the Pentagon started giving soldiers stationed in Iraq two-week leaves in the largest R & R program since the Vietnam War. Soldiers on R & R or Emergency Leave are flown by the military to Germany or three airports in the United States, Baltimore/Washington, (BWI), Dallas/FortWorth, (DFW), or Atlanta, (ATL ) for free.

The soldiers have been responsible for flights the rest of the way in the U.S. to their destinations, until Congress provided funding for this purpose on November 3, 2003. However, this funding is not yet available and may not be sufficient for all the troops or troops on "Emergency Leave".

More than 470 soldiers a day are arriving in the U.S.

Many soldiers on R&R leave must purchase high-priced last minute airfares to connect to their hometowns once their military flights land at the airports in Baltimore, Dallas or Atlanta. Soldiers on "Emergency Leave" must still pay the full cost of their domestic travel when they are rushed home for the family death, birth, illness or other emergency. The military does not pay the cost of their travel in the United States, so your frequent flyer miles are a huge help.

Americans have donated their unused frequent flyer miles to the Department of Defense to help troops travel home and spend quality time with their loved ones, without worrying about how much it will cost.

Your extra miles today can help our soldiers
get home to their families tomorrow.

More than 169 million miles have been donated by the airlines and travellers throughout the USA, enough for over 6,700 round trip flights.

The men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families thank you.

Care Packages for Soldiers: With the holidays around the corner, many Americans have asked how they can send "care packages" to the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Most organizations providing this service require that you send the package to a known solider. The historic tradition of sending a package to "any soldier" is more difficult in an era of terrorism. However, one proud father of a U.S. Army solider serving in Iraq has set up a web site, and with his son devised a system for sending care packages. The website is www.anysoldier.us and it is full of recommendations on items the soldiers need today.

This site is not an official U.S. House of Representatives website.
It is owned and operated by Congressman C. A. Dutch Ruppersberger.

I'm fully aware that Peja, Consevative Me, jbstick, Texaggie79, have posted this earlier; however, for our troops to get home on a limited income a re-posting may be in order.

This was brought up on FOX News last night by Greta Van Susteren. Would be nice if Rush Limbaugh gave the American Soldier a plug on this today.

If someone is having problems getting military dependents reasonable domestic fares (once they've caught a military flight from overseas), they might want to check out posts 18 and 26 on this thread

Thanks all for making it a reality that a service man, or woman, may have the opportunity to enjoy the company of their loved ones during this holy season, and to remember why Christmas is.

Northwest Airlines won't participate in this. An employee of Fox News will contribute his 25,000 flyer miles if NW will participate, as will many viewers who are writing in to Greta.
