Don't count on it. Things don't seem to be "breaking" our way lately.

Exactly. You criticize a politician two months before an election and you go to jail. Which means practically anytime in the next year. This decision is the same league as Dred Scott, Roe V Wade And Lawrence V Texas. Another unconstitutional atrocity birthed by the SCOTUS Supremes.

Not gonna waste the bandwidth. Simply head down to your local library and look at some microfiche files. The namecalling and accusations that were routine then make the "it's like my father was killed all over again" piece from 2000 look lame.

It is not a question of wwhat is "not so bad," It is a question of the Constitution of the United States of America. It is not about pragmatism, it is abou rights.

The decision actually benefits the GOP if the two parties go head to head.

I don't give a rats ass if this helps the GOP. I'm sick of having the constitution pissed on for the benefit of ANY political party. This is (at least for a little longer) the United States of America, not the United States of the GOP!

Gee, everybody is still speaking freely right now. When does that get cut off?

Right before the election. You won't be allowed to talk about it when it matters most, only when it doesn't matter.

Exactly.

The fact is, there is a significant all-or-nothing contingent on our side of the issue, and that is probably as big a problem as the lies of the Left in my book.

"Does this disallow the Soros and (Progressive Insurance's) Lewis' of the world from contributing tens of millions of dollars to political parties or organizations like moveon.org?"

Yes, it makes it illegal. However, Soros will still give the money to moveon.org, and they will still find ways to advertise. What's the penalty for violating CFR? A slap on the wrist? A small fine? The law doesn't apply to the left.

Limiting the unalienable right of free speech and violating the Constitution are ok, so long as the end result benefits a certain political party????

The court also upheld restrictions on political ads in the weeks before an election. The television and radio ads often feature harsh attacks by one politician against another or by groups running commercials against candidates.

Bush and a lot of Republicans thought they could look good being for 'Campaign Finance Reform" and it wouldn't matter because the Supremes would throw it out as obviously unconstitutional.
They underestimated the imbicility of the court.
They have handed control of the country to the editorials of the large liberal 'mainstream' media.

I thought we were doomed.
Then I realized that the NRA has shown the way around the law by becomming part of the media and using 'Editorials" instead of advertising

This will have no more real effect on campaigning than any of the other 'reform' attempts have.

However, it is another step down the road to the destruction of the Constitution.

That is quite possibly the most inane comment I have ever seen on FR.

Since tasting victory, the majority of Freepers now place party before principle. It is amazing, the contortions they do to rationalize supporting a de facto socialist president. Here's your list, folks, in case you are keeping track:

1. Deficit spending as far as the eye can see with increases in domestic spending that far exceed the rate of inflation and economic growth COMBINED.
2. The education bill
3. The farm bill
4. Billions in Aids relief for Africa
5. Campaign Finance Reform
6. Federal Agents at every airport strip searching Americans

One question for all you Freepers who love "victory" so much you are willing to sell anything to get it:

Is the country more socialist today than it would have been had Al Gore been elected with a Democrat Congress?

In your heart, you know the answer. We have met the enemy and he is us.

Well said...this is about a VIOLATION of FREE SPEECH, and THAT is the core issue...we are no longer a nation under the Constitution, but one under the RULE of judges.

Maybe this puts more responsibility on the individual rather than the idiots on the boob tube.

Maybe this throws the burden on to the grass roots ..... meaning us.

And we need to keep in mind that the bias of the media has become so obvious that even morons are beginning to notice it .... so they don't have as much control as they used to in shaping people's opinions.

Notice that the media carried all the 'rats bashing the President for his Thanksgiving trip to Iraq .... and yet he got a nice bounce in the polls. The public is beginning to get skeptical about the media.

I'm not happy about this one bit .... but I'm willing to wait and see how it shakes out before declaring that the sky has fallen.

Excuse us for being miffed at the SCOTUS blatantly violating the constitution on a bill Bush signed.

Not all of us have the immediate reaction at times like this of picking up the GOP pompoms. This is a sickening and disastrous decision, and all you can do is say let's elect more of the same? We have full GOP cotrol and yet this monstrosity has occured, as well as unparalelled growth in spending. On domestic issues and liberty, Bush has been a miserable failure. Fortunately for him foreign policy is priority #1 right now or he'd be toast.

Candidates of the time of the founding NEVER campaigned nor publicly sought offices. They worked behind the scenes. It is true that there was plenty of personal attacks and lies that were printed BUT NOT THROUGH ADS. Newspapers of those days were openly partisian and everyone knew it no pretension of neutrality.
