John Lennon killed on this day('Dead On This Day, Still Dead' list)

Murdered at 10:55pm eastern on 12/8/80. At 11:15pm Howard Cosell interrupted the Monday Night Football game between Miami and New England, as it was going into overtime, to announce:

"One of the great figures of the entire world, one of the great artists, was shot to death horribly at the Dakota Apartments, 72nd Street and Central Park West in New York City. John Lennon is dead. He was the most important member of the Beatles, and the Beatles, lead by John Lennon, created music that touched the whole of civilization. Not just people in Liverpool, where the group was born, but the people of the world."

Not that I agreed with his politics, but anyone watching that night will remember that weird moment.

Excellent choice.

SO many great albums, so little time to listen to them over and over again.

Original fave "Madman Across the Water" by the now Sir Elton John.

Beatles fave, Abbey Road, and that one lovely side of the White Album, the one with "blackbird" on it.

"Where did all that time go?!"

Hubby was pondering that annoying aspect of the space/time continuum tonight. He couldn't believe it was over a week since Thanksgiving. (I think he's just secretly starting to worry about getting the Christmas shopping done.)

He said he hoped he'd live to be a thousand, so he'd be able to actually experience the next ten years of his life. It feels that way sometimes.

the now Sir Elton John.

Am I the only one who thinks that conferring knighthood on pop stars renders the entire concept of knighthood hopelessly silly?

I was a little young for the Beatles. I dont doubt their impact on music as we all know it. My older sister was one of the screaming girls that passed out every time they came on the TV.

Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour had the same type of synergy as John & Paul.

I think Gilmour is one of THE best guitarists that will ever be.

What a British Invation this is!

Pink Floyd, The Who, The Hollies...

Respectfully disagree. Among Beatle fans, there are 'John people' and 'Paul people'. I'm on the John side.

I am a Paul people! And my best friend was a George people person! :-) I am still a great fan of Paul McCartney who I think is musically brilliant!

Life is very short, and there's no ti..i..i..i..ime, for fussing and fighting my friend.

Nice example, I didn't know that. When Paul was writing "I Saw Her Standing There" he wrote "She was just seventeen, a real beauty queen" John suggested (whatever) "She was just seventeen, you know what I mean". A real difference in the makeup of the song.
