Murdered at 10:55pm eastern on 12/8/80. At 11:15pm Howard Cosell interrupted the Monday Night Football game between Miami and New England, as it was going into overtime, to announce:
"One of the great figures of the entire world, one of the great artists, was shot to death horribly at the Dakota Apartments, 72nd Street and Central Park West in New York City. John Lennon is dead. He was the most important member of the Beatles, and the Beatles, lead by John Lennon, created music that touched the whole of civilization. Not just people in Liverpool, where the group was born, but the people of the world."
Not that I agreed with his politics, but anyone watching that night will remember that weird moment.

'When I saw her standing there'(can't remember the song title, but most remember that song)... You weren't even close - the song title was "I Saw Her Standing There."
Hee hee...
Oh, BTW - (here we go for a major controversy) - it was "goo goo goo joob."

I wasn't watching Monday night football at the time, but I certainly recall how stunned I was by the news. As a former Beatlemaniac, who was lucky enough to see them in concert I was very sad about this.

I'm a bit surprised that Monday Night Football hasn't mentioned the anniversary, seeing how it was one of its most famous and most remembered moments. Sad, but historical.

Yellow Submarine = acid trip era. The early years, '62 thru '66 was the best stuff, IMHO.

Now you are going to tell me it wasn't 'toejam foot ball'?
BTW, how many hole does it take to fill the Albert Hall?

I was thinking this afternoon that we need here a new PING LIST for all those who think some Eddie B.B.Van Clapton is this century's Mozart, and some other halfwit a "greatest rhythm guitarist in the universe! EVER!" Fandom without an inch of detachment or perspective. Let's call it, oh, the TIGER BEAT PING LIST!

The fifth Beatle, right?Next week's campaign strategy. After they finally reveal that he served in Vietnam, that is.

Being a Beatles fan for 40 years and have everything they recorded it is no doubt that Paul McCartney was the most important memberActually...George Martin was the most important Beatle. :-)

Respectfully disagree. Among Beatle fans, there are 'John people' and 'Paul people'. I'm on the John side.
To: jwh_Denver
Without Lennon's weird edge, Paul was nothing but bubblegum pop.
Without Paul's pop sense, Lennon was nothing but edgy and weird.

Dunno, but if I had to guess, it'd be nine...number nine...number nine...number nine...number nine...

I never hated Yoko either but her voice sounded like a nail scracthing a chalkboard.

it is no doubt that Paul McCartney was the most important member. The phrase "The Whole is Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts" applies to John and Paul.
Neither alone were as good as they were together. A sweet and sour sensation if there ever was one.

I was in Germany at a military training installation for a one or two week course. I was bored, so I bought a Playboy, and I read the John Lennon interview that evening. When I awoke that morning I heard the sad news on the radio, oh my.

Yeah, they were pretty groovy too.
