Sharpton, NYC Reach $200,000 Settlement

NEW YORK (AP)--New York City has agreed to pay $200,000 in damages to Al Sharpton after he was stabbed nearly 13 years ago at a protest where he said police failed to protect him.

The settlement, which also covers the Democratic presidential candidate's $7,447.76 hospital bill, came as jury selection was to begin Monday in his decade-old civil case against the New York Police Department.

Sharpton claimed police were ``careless, negligent and reckless'' during the 1991 incident, said his lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein. Sharpton, a civil rights activist, was protesting what he considered lenient sentencing of white defendants in the 1989 killing of Yusuf Hawkins, a black teenager.

The city's law department on Monday defended the NYPD's actions, but said it agreed to the settlement because the city could not predict how a jury might rule.

Sharpton said he still fears large crowds as a result of the stabbing, and has a one-inch scar on his chest.

His attacker, Michael Riccardi, was convicted of first-degree assault and sentenced to the maximum of five to 15 years in prison.

Well, that takes care of at least a couple of acres, one ass and a mule, now where do we go?

the police have no obligation to protect any individual.

I thought that was well-settled law as well.

Sharpton said he still fears large crowds

So that explains the turnout at the Sharpton for President rallies.

I am going to sue for $200,000 for having to look at his big man-boob.

Sharpton "is" a large crowd all by himself.

or Yankel Rosenbaum who was stabbed to death by a Sharpton inspired mob in Crown Heights.

his lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein

Somewhat ironic choice of lawyers given Al's past.

I understand your aversion to outright libel, but,
Insinuation is a cowardly way to make points.

WTF are you talking about?

I was making the point that Sharpton, with his anti-semitic rantings, instigated a mob to kill a young Jewish man, yet when he needed a litigator he turned to the very people he was demeaning.

I find that ironic indeed and if you think the truth is either libelous or cowardly, you've got your head up your @$$.

I hope the DA(?) that has never received a dime from the lawsuit he won against Sharpton sees a bit of this money.

That was my first thought as well. actually, the DA should get all the money since his judgment against Al is way more. Al simply did not pay the DA because he said he had no money at all and everything he has is paid for by someone else. The DA should garnish this judgment.

You're way out of line on the Crown Heights comment. Explain please how Sharpton was involved.

Al's a buffoon and a racist when it suits his purpose. His history is replete with self-serving ugliness. But if we want to be seen as being honest we have to give credit where it is due. When he was stabbed he did not call for any action by anybody in response. He in fact called right away for quiet.

Let Al talk all he wants. Having this clown on the Dem center stage is a good thing.

I was making the point

You made the point by insinuation.

Such obscenity, and hostility! Try eating more fiber.

I'm pretty sure that it's well established law, right up to the Suprme Court, that the police have no obligation to protect any individual.

Yup, you're correct on that one. However, it doesn't sound like that matters when the city caves in to financial blackmail and settles.

Well, WYSIWYG!

At least I didn't deny using an insinuation, and then immediately explain what I was just insuating. LOL.

Sorry but you are mixing two different things. Sharpton was inciting against Jews in Crown Heights after a young Black kid died in an auto accident where a religious Jew was driving. At the height of that incitement Yankel Rosenbaum was stabbed by a group of rampaging Black youth who were later acquitted in a race baiting trial. This was all totally unrelated to Sharpton being stabbed but had Sharpton's grimy finger prints and big mouth all ove it.

No. You are wrong.

Yankel was killed at the very beginning of the incident. A child (I'll bet you don't know his name without looking it up) was killed in an accident after being struck by a vehicle driven by a Hasidim. The gathering crowd was incited by a guy named Price (now serving 20 years) to get the Jews. Yankel was wrong place wrong time. Limrick Nelson (now in prison) stabbed him fatally. This happened within hours after the original incident. Sharpton had nothing at all to do with it.

As I wrote, Al is a buffoon and a racist but give him his due when he behaves properly (calling for quiet after he was stabbed). Dropping every racial incident in NY at his feet just because it makes you feel good isn't honest, and we should do our best to be honest.
