What's the New "Pager" Icon About? (Vanity Request for Help)
Free Republic
Posted on 12/07/2003 4:31:44 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest
I noticed this morning that a little speaker icon had popped up next to my screen name, and when I let the browser settle on it, the word "pager" appears. When I click on it, it just takes me to my comments, same as clicking on "New Messages."
Could someone please explain this innovation? Thanks.

I'd like to lose the damn icon myself... But go change your ding a ling sounds and maybe you can find a chime.... Don't know about them phone rings that howlin was talking about....
Chuck Berry
"My Ding a Ling" lyrics
When I was a little bitty boy
my grandmother bought me a cute little toy
Silver bells hangin' on a string
she told me it was my ding a ling
My ding a ling, my ding a ling
I want to play with my ding a ling
My ding a ling, my ding a ling
I want to play with my ding a ling
And then mother took me to Grammer School
But I stopped all in the vestibule
Every time that bell would ring
catched me playin' with my ding a ling
Once I was climbing the garden wall
I slipped and had a terrible fall
I fell so hard I heard bells ring
but held on to my ding a ling
Once I was swimming cross Turtle creek
many snappers all around my feet
Shure was hard swimming cross that thing
with both hands holdin' my ding a ling
This here song it aint so sad
the cutest little song you ever had
those of you who will not sing
You must be playin' with your own ding a ling
My ding a ling
Your ding a ling, your ding a ling
We saw you playin' with your ding a ling
My ding a ling everybody sing
I want to play with my ding a ling

Well I guess I could have used the following: as I'm ducking....
"Tiger Rag"
(Hold that Tiger)
Long ago, way down in the jungle
Someone got an inspiration for a tune,
And that jingle brought from the jungle
Became famous mighty soon.
Thrills and chills it sends thru you!
Hot! so hot, it burns you too!
Tho' it's just the growl of the tiger
It was written in a syncopated way,
More and more they howl for the 'Tiger'
Ev'ry where you go today
They're shoutin'
Where's that Tiger! Where's that Tiger!
Where's that Tiger! Where's that Tiger!
Hold that Tiger! Hold that Tiger!
Hold that Tiger!

Can you tell me does this new pager thingy "ping," "ring a ding" or whatever
while you are reading a thread? If not what good does it do? You could always see that you have messages when you go to the latest postings page.
John you said if you don't have Java enabled there is another way by clicking on another link but all it does is bring up a window that says you have new messages or you don't have any new messages.
I am having a difficult time trying to figure this pager thing out. :-(

Basically, its a small window that refreshes every 60 seconds. Its kinda like a miny "latest" page only its just to notify with a "new posts to you" or a "no new posts to you".
If you keep the window open in the background, it will continually check for new messages to you and if there is, it will "ding" if you have sound. So while you are reading a thread or just a few steps away from your computer, you will hear the ding and you will know to check your my comments page.
If you open up a new window and use this
http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/notify?spoken=no then just keep that window up and it will do the same thing...
Does that help?

WOW! It worked after several tries of losing the window. I didn't get any sound though and I had my volumn up. Is there somewhere I should go to connect to sound?
Thanks for your help smith288, and thanks for the new feature John.

Unfortunately, if there is no sound, its probably client side (your browser). Some people report no sound, others say they get it. I get it fine. Sorry I cant help you more.
