UN observes International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People

The United Nations today observed the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People with a series of resolutions and speeches calling for a peaceful settlement of the Middle East conflict.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in remarks to the General Assembly's Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, said recent peace initiatives by Palestinian and Israeli civil society leaders show a settlement can be reached to the conflict.

Mr. Annan said the Israeli Government and the Palestinian Authority must act now rather than wait for the other side to the make the first move. He added that there was hope that the two Prime Ministers may meet soon and a ceasefire could be established.

"These tender shoots must be nourished. At the same time, the parties must be judged not by their stated intentions but by their actions on the ground," he said.

General Assembly President Julian Hunte of St Lucia said history showed that "problems between peoples and States could not be solved by violence and conflict," adding that a two-State solution was the only way to end the conflict.

Mr. Hunte praised the work of the Quartet, and said the rest of the international community must support their efforts.

The Security Council President for December, Ambassador Stefan Tafrov of Bulgaria, said the Council was particularly concerned about the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories.

"Easing the restrictions that had been placed on the movement of humanitarian personnel would enable the workers to reach those in need and to improve the quality of life in the Palestinian territories," Ambassador Tafrov said.

The Chairman of the Committee on the Palestinians, Papa Louis Fall of Senegal, said the Committee - while recognizing Israel's right to security - "vigorously condemned the policy and practice of targeted assassinations."

Mr. Fall said the Committee also found it unacceptable that Yasser Arafat, Chairman of the Palestinian Authority, remained confined by Israel's army to his headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

Nasser Al-Kidwa, the Observer for Palestine, said in a statement on behalf of Mr. Arafat that the past year has been a difficult one for Palestine.

He said Israel's construction of a barrier and "the barbarism of the associated practices and repressive measures" of Israeli occupation had "further nurtured the seeds of malice and hatred."

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed each year on 29 November, which fell on a Saturday this year.

World Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People Observed

Pyongyang, November 29 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun today observes the World Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. On this occasion the Korean people extend greetings and solidarity to the Palestinian people in their struggle to retake the territory occupied by Israeli aggressors, set up an independent state and achieve Mideast peace, the paper says in a signed article, and goes on:

It is the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to retake the lost territory and build an independent and sovereign state.

To fight for it is the cause of justice.

The Palestinian people are braving by the concerted efforts the Israeli moves to remove the leadership of Palestine headed by Yasser Arafat in conspiracy with the U.S. and foiling its attempt.

The Korean people sincerely wish the Palestinian people victory in their struggle to drive the Israeli aggressors out of their country and restore the legitimate national rights including the right to self-determination.

They will as ever stand on the side of the Palestinian people and fully support their cause of establishing an independent state.

Support and solidarity of the world progressives with their just cause will be intensified still further.

These tender shoots must be nourished.

Yeah, I'll nourish 'em. I got a nice bleach & salt solution meant specifically for tender shoots like these.

Further evidence the U.N. won't recognize reality and has no expectation the "Palestinian People" should assume any responsibility for resolving the conflict peacefully. Good grief!

Give me a break. Yes..please let them blow themselves up as another poster commented. That would be the ultimate show of solidarity (I hate that word) and would do the US a large favor by eliminating themselves.

I had the privilege of confronting some of these people recently. Here in the UK I came across a Pro Palestinian stand in a busy city centre giving out leaflets etc. So I took the opportunity to have a "chat" with then! I kept my cool so to speak and thoroughly enjoyed it!!

I started by asking them when they would stop nail bombing school buses.... no answer

They had no answer to having 99.9% of the land in the middle east but wanting more.

They had no answer to having muslims 100% of the oil wealth but wasting it.

They had no answer to 700,000+ Jews having their homes, possessions and businesses confiscated or destroyed as they were made refuges by muslim countries.

They had no answer to the contrast between the Jewish refuges resettling and building new lives while the muslims were kept in squalid camps by the king of Jordan with the agreement of other muslim nations.

They never did give me an answer to wither they would give up nail bombing innocent women and children.

Still I did feel better for having had the chance to confront them and not let them put forward their propaganda unopposed.

I second that whole-heartedly ... Dave Hunt says that when Israel decided to defend itself (as it should) in 1973 against the sneak attack by Egypt, Syria and Jordan, 61 nations broke diplomatic ties with Israel but not one rebuked those nations for their sneak attack ...

and it's still the same today ...

As I recall, the un has one or more "contingency sites" located in other nations... let's banish them there--
