The sunrise over San Diego just now is unbelievable. First a glowing ball of orange; now hidden completely by smoke. Gonna be a long day.

I went over to the neighborhood park last night to look east towards the Otay fire. You could see the flames trailing down a ridge. Went back a few minutes ago: The smoke and haze have completely hidden everything east from Otay Ranch towards Eastlake.

I am sitting here with an older road atlas, tryinmg to find the I10, but am confused.
I checked mapquest, and see 110 going toward the ocean. Is that the highway you mean?

The weather for San Diego after today starts looking promising. If the firefighters can contain the fires until Wednesday they may be able to save what is not burnt. The link to the weather is below:
http://www.wunderground.com/US/CA/San_Diego.html This morning could be critical with winds from the NE over 20 mph.

"But he really meant the governor's house."
Absolutely. Maybe he'll find a reason he must leave the state.

Thanks, maybe EBuck can design a bumper sticker that leaves the last digit blank for the vehicle owner to fill in, like 200_.

Don't confuse the I-10 with the 110. The I-10 goes straight to the ocean in Santa Monica, all the way across the border to Arizona and beyond. It is the main artery from the eastern counties to downtown LA.

Been watching KTLA this morning and saw the fire jump the 118 -- at first they were giving alternate routes out of this area of Simi Valley and pretty soon the main alternte route was no longer there.
They had better get the planes into that area because the exit routes from those neighborhoods are pretty much gone with all the traffic backed up on the 101! The best news is that the winds have not kicked up yet this morning in that area. The helicopters are now dropping water on the fires which are approaching a large residential neighborhood -- so far no homes in that area have been lost.
Just announced that the eastern flank of the Simi Valley fire is approaching San Fernando Valley.
What are the chances of so many fires being in the area of freeways? I say slim to none! Count me in with the tinfoil hat.

I'm off to work, FR will be my only link to news so everyone please hang in there if you can.
One note regarding Crestline; local news has again reminded me that they saved the 'historic' - and abandoned - cliffhanger restaurant on highway 18. Then they segued to some guy being forced from his home a mile or so away from that 'landmark' because the house was burning to the ground.
(OK, it's only one instance but I've seen it so often that it will stay burned into my memory of this disaster.)
The restaurant will NEVER be reoccupied because it is dangerously old and hangs out over a real big fall. Let's take a minute to consider priorities!

I-10 goes east all the way to Jacksonville -- Would also think that other Freeways going into Orange and Riverside counties would also be open.

Count me in with the tinfoil hat. It's not tinfoil at all. We know the fires were deliberately set. Now we need to find out who set them and why now.

I am in OK, but used to live in Yucaipa and was in that area of the fire last December. I have been watching KTLA since they came on live this morning -- helicopters are now up to help fight the fire.
In fact, I was watching KTLA when the fire jumped the 118 inn one place and then two other places took off as they had their helicopter right over the scene. I love satellite or I would be getting no news on this area.
They just announced on KTLA that the wind is low enough this morning that they believe they can protect all this housing development east of the 118. Reporting Chatsworth is not in immediate danger because the winds are not blowing that way.

by my previous post..I meant that the only unscathed main land corridor out of LA is the I10. That is so far. [Whistling past the graveyard again]Any FReepers in a position where they can keep an eye on 10???
Camera with a telephoto lens might be good, too...
