Senate panel approves bill to let Bush intervene in Schiavo case an Associated Press / ABC Action News report 10/21/03 related story: Judge hears Terri Schiavo supporters' last hope (10/20/03)
TALLAHASSEE - A state Senate panel approved legislation Tuesday that would allow Gov. Jeb Bush to order a feeding tube be reinserted in a brain-damaged woman in defiance of a court order that allowed her husband to remove the tube.
The bill would give the governor 15 days to order a feeding tube reinserted into Terri Schiavo, one of the nation's longest and most bitter euthanasia cases.
The Senate Rules & Calendar Committee approved the bill on a 10-2 vote. The full Senate planned to consider the legislation Tuesday evening. The House passed a similar bill 68-23 Monday.
Schiavo has been at the center of a court battle between her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, and her husband, Michael Schiavo. The parents want Terri Schiavo to live, and her husband says she would rather die.
Republican lawmakers say that where judges might be wrong, especially in cases like Schiavo's, such legislation is desperately needed. Opponents say the measure is unconstitutional.
Meanwhile, a federal judge in Tampa is expected to rule as early as Tuesday on a request by a state agency for the disabled that Schiavo be kept alive so it could investigate a claim that she is being abused by having the tube removed.

Makes me wonder if all the delays are for Terri to die in the meantime and the problem just disappears.

What is these folks don't get about "...life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"???? They obviously think that only applies to them, not the little people, or disabled people.

We need to make sure the pressure is kept up on the Senate members, but we must speak positively! Talk about the value of human life, repeat that she is not in a coma.
Make sure if any of you can that the bill is written properly. Should we focus on the wording of the bill? There pay be a problem with the line "persistent vegatative state". What if the individual is not in a coma?
KEEP IT POSITIVE, BUT CONTINUE TO CONTACT; GET FRIENDS TO CONTACT; TELL THEM TO SEND ENCOURAGING, WARM E-MAILS.
DO NOT LET YOUR ANGER AND DISCOURAGEMENT CREEP INTO YOUR CONTACTS WITH THE SENATORS.
God Bless America!

Terri was a young woman with an eating disorder under doctor's care. He failed to recognize a potassium deficiency.
How this turns into murder is something the defenders of keeping Terri alive could tell you, they seem to know.

That's what was reported last night, that Senator King was pushing the bill.
Initial reports were that he was going to block it, though now we are not even sure the initial report was correct regarding the bill's existence in the first place.
I think the even larger backlash that was seen coming changed some hearts, of course as well as God moving their wills. I think Senator King took the good road.
The vote against last night were democrats. Pfffft on them.

I hope people care enough about me to intervene so I can stay in that wonderful state of life for as long as science can manage. That's exactly what a living will is to provide for. Your life, your choice...but if there is no such legal device, as in Terri's case, then we should err on the side of caution. That is what this bill is designed to provide for.

i don't think your info was bad at all. simply dated, from what i gather. he was (is?) opposed to a bill crafted too broadly that would interfere with a person's completely clear personal desires (living will?, etc.) and thus be used against their wishes, as i read his earlier statements. he has supported this one, as far as i can gather... but i think a bit too late... but that fight is for tomorrow, not now.

This bill is going to pass. As one who works in an evil legislature I can tell you that the cowards never want the full body to vote on a high-profile bill when everyone is looking if the intent is to kill it. If they are going to oppose it, they kill it in committee. (They usually stack the committee so that safe incumbents can do all the dirty work.) Now that the bill has advanced past Senate Rules, there is probably no stopping it.
This is a great day. Pray everyone.

I agree. Don't disparage them. We need them on our side. Be firm, but polite.
Too, the legislature deserves some thank-you notes. The action taken last night is shamefully late, but it was taken. And it was taken with many voicing opinions that mirror ours.

I know it will pass. I said that last night after the House spoke and voted. Who could follow those performances and not vote to save Terri? Only someone who wants to be hated for life in Florida, I think.
That said I wish time was not so hard on our backs. I am very worried about Terri today. She has to be experiencing some of the very serious complications of dehydration. May God keep her painfree and at peace!

My Lord, God, please give Terri an extra day of nutritive stores in her body to delay the time her mortal self would typically succumb to the physical deprivation she has been subjected to.

Senator King is the one not allowing the bill to come to a vote in the Senate. To the best of my knowledge, King originally had reservations, but decided to err on the side of keeping Terri alive. It is not helping our cause to continue to bash him (I'm not accusing you of doing so).
