Do you shop at REI or Barnes and Nobel or Clearcreek?
If so, you might want to reconsider or at least drop them a line and let them know how you feel about their businesses raising money to defeat President Bush.

This has to be a scam. They also have Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and Dell Computers on their list. I seriously doubt these companies would allow their names to be used like this.
Let's find out, shall we?
Here's the letter I sent to them. Also, I have sent this information to about three dozen friends and family members I happen to know use REI. Already I am receiving mail back about dropping them and "shopping elsewhere". How's that for "quick"?
Let's see what REI responds with, I'll post it if they do.
Dear REI;
You just lost yourselves a few customers.
Over the past few years my family has used your store for many camping items. Not myself alone, I have a large family. I also have several dozen friends who are now aware of a little "political attack" you're making on the President of the United States.
This link: http://www.shoptodropbush.com/
states:
"This site is going to raise 10,000,000 dollars by October 2004, and all of it will go to make sure we dont have four more years of George Bush mucking up everything.
George Bush raises his millions by promising fat cats hell cut their taxes if they just donate to his campaign. We are going to raise millions by encouraging you to shop on-line, through the stores on this site. Heres how it works."
This is pure, unadulterated nonsense. We have posted this link on several sites now to "help you out". It is because of those 'tax cuts' that I can afford to buy things from your store.
Idiots!
Get involved in politics all you like, but I strongly suggest you stick to selling the things you sell and leave politics out of the picture. It will only send you down the road of the "Dixie Chicks" and a few other famous folks who thought they could upset their fans and customers.
I've passed this information to all my friends and family, who used to shop at your store. No more new customers from my family.

I have been a member of REI since the single store on Pine Street in Seattle, 35+ years ago. I know a few employees in the corporate office and have worked on a few special projects for them over the years. I am contacting them now about this and will update this thread with a response from the "suits". Thanks for checking into this

Excellant template! It's pretty simple. If they allow themselves to be used to defeat the president, they don't get my money!
Here's another chance. Hickory Farms may not be under my tree the Christmas...

Called REI......they are in shock and would NEVER get involved with such an enterprize.
They thanked me profusely for letting them know and intend to do what they can to remove their link from the website.
While we were on the phone the gentlemen was able to find the site.....
So do give REI a chance to get this straight.

Barnes & "Nobel"???
They're going to defeat Bush and they can't even spell?
Can't even copy off the Barnes & Noble website?
HA!
Still not going to shop at REI anymore, though, and as for Dell Computers: you bet your bippy they're a bunch of wild-eyed Leftists from the People's Republic of Austin!

Marketing ploy...... You have to link/purchase through the web site and the web site owner gets a percentage based upon an agreement with the listed outlets... He's using part of his percentage to support the defeat of President Bush.... If you don't shop online linking through this web site then no money goes toward the pockets of the web site owner... More than likely the participating companies don't know what he's advertising or doing...
The secret is for all of us to all to contribute by buying things we woud buy anyway. Just link to the on-line merchants through this stie. The on-line merchants may not particularly support our cause. They just see this site as a form of marketting for them. But they will send us a percentage of whatever you spend at their site. For instance, Amazon donates 5% of whatever you buy through this site, to this site. That means for every $100 you spend there, $5 goes to defeating GWB.

Thank YOU!
I can't imagine any retailer wanting to be associated with any site that refers to the President as 'whistleass' especially this close to Christmas.

Just an observation: The web site spells "Noble" wrong in the Barnes+Noble listing. They spell it as "Nobel."

Not really a scam - ANYONE with any website can sign up online for these affiliate programs. FR could run it if they want.Is there any reason why Free Republic doesn't do this? Imagine the purchasing power of all of the Freepers and lurkers here. There would be no need for quarterly fundraisers.

I have just sent the same type of email to Coldwater Creek. I let them know that I would not be Christmas shopping with them as I often do as long as they were associated with this site. I also am sending this site to many of my friends who don't visit Free Republic but who support the President. We must be vigilant.
