Removal of brain-damaged woman's feeding tube to proceed MITCH STACY Associated Press

DOVER, Fla. - Gov. Jeb Bush said Wednesday he has ordered his legal team to try to find a way to intervene in the case of severely disabled woman who is scheduled to have the feeding tube keeping her alive removed.

Bush's comments came after a 20-minute meeting with the family of Terri Schiavo, who faces a 2 p.m. Wednesday deadline in the removal of the tube. Her husband, Michael Schiavo, has been granted permission to remove the tube in a six-year legal battle against her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler.

Bush said his attorneys are looking for legal alternatives to somehow block the removal of the tube, but did not know yet what they might be.

"We are going to seek whatever legal alternatives are available and seek the best minds to find another avenue to submit to the courts to see if there can be a change in this ruling," Bush said at an appearance in Dover dedicating new housing for migrant workers.

"I am not a doctor, I am not a lawyer, But I know that if a person can be able to sustain life without life support, that should be tried," the governor said, adding the "ultimate decision of this is in the courts."

Bob Schindler Jr., Terri Schiavo's brother, said the family was heartened by the governor's last-minute effort. The Schindlers have pleaded with Bush - who in previous legal findings have supported their efforts to obtain therapy for their daughter - to intervene.

"The family has not given up hope on Terri," Bob Schindler Jr. said following the meeting with Bush. "We have spoken to the governor, and he hasn't given up hope either."

Terri Schiavo, 39, is expected to die within two weeks after the tube's removal. She's been in a vegetative state since suffering a heart attack in 1990. Her parents believe she is capable of learning how to eat and drink on her own.

A state appeals court in Lakeland rejected motions by an attorney for the Schindlers and their legal remedies have been exhausted, their lawyer said Tuesday.

Michael Schiavo says he is carrying out his wife's wishes that she not be kept alive artificially. The parents say their daughter has shown signs of trying to communicate and could be rehabilitated.

"In our eyes, it's murder," Bob Schindler said Wednesday on CBS' "Early Show."

George Felos, attorney for Michael Schiavo, said that the Schindlers were "still in denial" over Terri Schiavo's wishes not to be kept alive.

Doctors have testified that the noises and facial expressions Terri Schiavo makes are reflexes and do not indicate that she has enough mental capabilities to communicate with others.

Just saw that same email on a thread from an earlier post.

The AP story from the Herald makes it sound like Jeb just made the remarks a short time ago.

Is anyone else seeing or hearing breaking reports that he may intervene?

Actually it'd be "I'm going to marry the woman I've been living with for the past ten years and to whom I refer to as "my fiance" and who had a child by me then we're gonna go on a spending spree!"

It's NOT known - that's one of the reasons this is a big deal - after he collected the $$ that he needed to take care of his wife "the rest of her life", which is what he said he wanted to do, he suddenly remembered she had said she didn't want to live on life support. His brother, and brother's wife, do back up his story, but I think it's strange that she had never expressed that wish to any member of her own family.

There is an awful lot of information connected with this case - hard to keep track sometimes.

"If anyone has some documentation around any kind of living will or clearly stated request by Terri prior to her incapacitation, I'd like to see it."

Why can't Jeb Bush convene a special session of the legislature to grant him the ability to stay an execution in civil cases (as he can in criminal cases)?

The legislative and executive branches of government are part of a system of checks and balances to prevent the judiciary from abusing its power, and vice versa. USE THEM!

I think most of us assume that life-support means a ventilator. How many of us ever thought it could mean a feeding tube? IF Terri ever said this, I doubt she meant food and water.

I understand your frustration, Brother.

We MUST act. But prayer must undergird our every action.

"The prayer of a righteous man availeth much."

It's in The Book!

For starters maybe he could demand that the police that have been posted by her door to keep her parents from moving her to Canada where she'll be safe (I can't believe I'm saying this) be sent home!

If by some miraculous means they could get her across the border they can make a claim for refugee status. It is automatically granted pending a hearing that would be well into the future. By writ of our Supreme Court, she would immediately be sheltered under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms just as if she were a Canadian citizen...including the right to medical care as she requires it, no questions asked.

Sadly, barring a last minute miracle, or agressive firm intervention by Governor Bush (National Guard?) I fear it's soon to be too late.

Question...if a post-death medical exam (autopsy?) demonstrated her neck injuries were a result of abuse by her husband, could he be charged with murder?

Prayers...

I'm not interested if she's in a vegatative state or not.

If she's not on life support, and she's not on an IV, and she can be taught to eat, then that therapy should proceed.

If she can eat on her own and do everything else on her own, then starving her is unconscionable.

It may be that he is working with his lawyer, who is pro-euthanasia, to make this a landmark pro-euthanasia case. There is an entire death industry waiting for the outcome of this case.

Governor Jeb Bush, if you are not legally able to intervene, then call your brother who has the power to issue executive orders!!!

Time is running out!!!

For one thing, the governor could have brought the legislature into special session, the way he did regarding an unborn baby being schedueld for termination! For another, he could instruct his State Attornay General to suspend the execution of the judge Greer court order to kill Terri, until a thorough investigation of the abuse and neglect by Michael Schiavo (his withholding of therapy and rehab efforts to even teach her to swallow for a starters, raiding her rehabilkitation trust to pay a euthanasia attorney for another) and the complicity of Greer in denying Terri's Constitutional Rights and secretly authorizing Michael to raid Terri's rehab funds to pay the euthanasia attorney, Felos, business associate of Greer and on the board of the Hospice into which Terri was moved! Yeah, there's actionable cause, but this governor is either too timid to act or is timing things for maximum political advantage. The latter is unconscionable since it makes him complicit in Terri's torture of isolation!

I heard breaking news of his Jeb's intervention twenty minutes ago on the local news - I'm in Tallahassee.

He's doing everything he can.

The story says he's trying to find a way... Keep asking GOD to show him how!

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.

Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:8-9

Father, Almighty God,

We come to you at this critical time to intercede on behalf of Terri, an innocent person who is unable to speak for herself. We ask you now to intervene on her behalf and stop the evil schemes of the devil to end her life. I ask specifically that you open the eyes of those searching for a way out for her and give them wisdom, knowledge and courage to stand firm.

Father you have reminded me that this battle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of the dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. I ask now that you bind up the forces of evil and bring forth your glory. I thank you that you hear us and you answer us when we call on you.

Send your angels to protect Terri right now. We thank you and praise you In Jesus Name, Amen.
