ZOT! If Bill Clinton were an addict, here's how Rush might spin it
The St. Louis Post Dispatch ^ | October 12, 2003 | Bill McClellan

Somewhere in a parallel universe, where we are the same people but things have happened in slightly differently ways, Rush Limbaugh greets his loyal listeners this morning.

"Lots to talk about today. You all know already that Bill Clinton, our former president, has admitted an addiction to prescription drugs.

Parents tell their kids not to do things that they themselves did.

One of the biggest problems today, IMO. Hypocrisy.

I disagree. And to be fair, I have to state that I've never been a fan of Rush..

Mimicing his writing style was well done, yes. But the point I was trying to make is that, (IMO) if a well known liberal, say, one that has no other scandal associated with him or her (if there are any and aside from just being liberal but that's another story :) ) - I feel fairly confident that Rush would have had a field day with it and that it would have sounded remarkably similar to what we read above.

I'm saying there is a double standard here that those who support Rush refuse to acknowledge.

And just in case.. one final time. I am in no way gleeful about Rush's problem. I hope he recovers and gets back on the air in short order. But I still won't be a fan.

"You must admit though, you are something else."

I do and I make no attempt to hide it. I don't fit well in either camp and find things to disgust me in every party I can think of. But the older I get, the further to the right I lean so.. here I am :)

The difference between Clinton (or any president) and Rush Limbaugh is the difference between apples and oranges.

One had his finger on the nuclear button. The other can be turned off the radio by any listener pressing a button.

Despite all the chest-thumping (and the "ZOT!" added to the title) the poster is still here, as is the article---which is dead-on.

Your arguments in his defense are specious at best.

I see a problem here. I am not defending him. Rush has stated on several occassions (and in both of his books - yes, I own both) that there should be harsher penalties for both users and distributors.

IF he is guilty, I think he should receive the exact same treatment as either you or I would expect. No more, no less. He knowingly sought and purchased illegal narcotics. Whether they were rock cocaine, or opiates is immaterial. Thus, IF he is found to have broken the law, he should face charges like anyone else. Personally, I think this law is wrong; but instead of breaking the law, I chose to seek to change the law through legal means. I do this with my voice, and my vote.

From published reports, Rush is accused of buying over 30,000 pharm grade narcotics. This is in excess of 80 pills/day for a year, more than a reasonable person would expect a user to take; thus he may also face charges of being a distributor. We all make choices in life, and we all face the consequences of our decisions. Rush favored and championed harsh sentences, now it looks like he will see what the rest of the users have had to live with.

Rush espoused harsh treatment of users and pushers alike ... on the air.

(I don't know about the books now, so I'm eliminating that part of your statement.)

Really?

I've been listening since 1992. I've been on the show about 20 times. I cannot recall any comment Rush has ever made about drugs save his occasional "Dope smoking, maggot infested, FM type" labeling of some. I have never thought to call or comment about drugs, unless you count my call about socialized medicine. I'd be interested to know if you could cite even one example of Rush ever discussing either drug users or drug pushers. (John Switzer used to do summaries of the shows which are probably still available somewhere on the 'net, if you care to search.)

This is also directed to americanshemale.

The honest truth is that Bill Clinton does have an addiction that interferes with his daily life. It is a sexual addiction. It was so strong that he received "service" from Monica while visiting heads of state waiting in the rose garden. He received "service" while he deployed troops overseas (and compromised security as I doubt that Monica had top level clearance).

Bill Clinton blamed his problems on his critics. He denied everything. His defenders claim that he was set up.

There are credible indications that the man is even a serial rapist.

Bill Clinton has yet to come clean on his sexual addiction and his defenders could care less.

Of course they pointed to those shots of Bubba leaving church clutching a bible. Haven't seen one of those shots created since he left office. What a phoney.

I have to agree that it's clever...the guy has spent some time listening to Rush. He has the style down pretty well. That said, I don't agree with it, but I'm not going to rehash everything I've already said on other Rush threads. I'm with Matt Drudge on this one....some of these folks better be emptying their own pockets.

"What Rush does with his own life is *his* business."

Which is NOT what Rush advocated when it came to *illegal* or *controlled* drugs.

Rush Limbaugh was on his usual tear.

"There's nothing good about drug use," he was saying. "We know it. It destroys individuals. It destroys families. Drug use destroys societies. Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. And the laws are good because we know what happens to people in societies and neighborhoods which become consumed by them. And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up."

"I believe the difference in Clinton and Rush, is that one was a President of the United States in whom we had lost all faith, and the other is an entertainer / editorialist / newsman who many of us have come to trust. MOST of us can understand the failings of a friend, but not the repeated lies of a politician."

Good point.

You know, I will admit this to the world: I was a registered Dim. *sob*

It's true. But Bill Clinton cured me of that.

There's a huge difference between an elected President snorting a recreational drug and a radio broadcaster succumbing to a very powerful, prescribed painkiller after surgery.

The article was right about one thing, though--yep, Rush's listeners (most of them) are still behind him. But it's not because we're unthinking sheep. It's because, like you say, we can understand the failings of a friend who's been there with us, throughout the Clinton presidency, throughout the chad-fest that was November 2000, etc.

God bless you Rush! :)

"

And you are missing my point. Rush has been on the air for 15 years now, right? In all that time, they can't find an actual case where he did this to this hypothetical liberal that had no other scandals and responded humbly about his first. THAT should speak 10,000,000x more volume about where the hypocrisy is. What this to me means is that this particular line of attack is The-Mother-Of-All-Hypocrisies.

How do liberals normally avoid the charge of hypocrisy? By simply never ever claiming that any behavior is bad. If you never take a moral stand on anything, no one can say you acted immoral by your own standards.

So now they want us to burn Rush in effigy for handling it with class, while we should give -them- a pass because A) they never have the spine to actually take a moral stand on any issue and so can't be accused of hypocrisy, and B) IF in some hypothetical universe a liberal actually acted with humility on their first scandal, we would hypothetically be mean to them (actual examples not included)

Come on - I think we can agree that in 15 years this is Rush's first real scandal of any weight. Now, go back over the last 15 years and actually try to think of a single liberal who took the heat they had coming to them the first time the heat was directed their way. I can't think of A SINGLE ONE.

Nah. Sorry. I ain't playing. Let them find a liberal who took the heat that was coming to him the FIRST time he got heat, and show me where they got blasted by anyone for it. It would've happened by now, wouldn't it?

Fact is, when conservatives get caught, they go down with class. When liberals get caught, they go down screaming and pointing fingers at everyone else. I'm supposed to give the Cookie of Non-Hypocrisy to liberals in light of that? No, sorry.
