Mirror’s man in US enters fray at Trump rally to see why supporters love him
Standing among the crowd wearing Make America Great Again caps and T-shirts while some of them screamed “Shove gun control up your a**” and “Trump Rambo”, I was nervous.
Typically I’d cover Donald Trump’s rallies from either behind the penned barricades or from the safety of a live feed off a TV news channel.
But this time it was different.
For, after braving five hours waiting to board the Trump Train at the President’s latest 2020 re-election rally, I joined thousands of his supporters in Cincinnati’s 33C heat to become just another face in the crowd.
Like the President, I was more interested in how his base responded, and to what, opting this time to just listen to what they were saying to each other, and to Trump, instead of fact-checking his every word.

I guess, he’s a Brit and has no experience of a high school pep rally. My experience at a Trump rally was like a pep rally on steroids. Loud music, lots of color, interesting speakers, a lot of smiling cheering people. At ours, a woman collapsed in the middle of President Trump’s speech. He immediately directed the EMT’s to her (she was in the standing crowd in front of the stage). Told them to take their time, not worry and then joined in when the crowd spontaneously started singing ‘Amazing Grace’. Absolutely nothing scary or sinister about it at all.

After dehumanizing Trump supporters for 3 years, he now is forced to get up close and personal to forensically examine “deplorables” who are actually mainstream , patriotic Americans.
