Heâs a brilliant orator with a sharp legal mind. But his expression unsettles me. I know my reaction is visceral and automatic, but as a neurologist it is my business to notice things out of the ordinary and probe them. The Senatorâs atypical expressions leave me uneasy.
Skill in reading faces is so fundamental to our species that 54 facial muscles orchestrate its endless nuances, which others read like a book just as we read them. Only some of these many facial muscles are under voluntary control, which is one reason it is so hard to maintain a poker face or counterfeit a smile.
Downturned expressions usually signal disagreeableness or disgust. But I honestly donât know because such an expression is rare in the context of public presentations that are meant to win people over. He may well be unaware that the message of his body language is incongruent with his words.

Drew doesn’t look like that anymore.
Well, ...yes.
So does seeing a naked woman.
Looks good and he’s kept it off.
I assume autocorrect just bit you on the ass, and you actually meant to type "intracranial"...?
He looked tough in the Marines:
I have sat back and watched the Trump/Cruz wars on FR for MONTHS now, and have not chimed in until now. You’re right, body language and looks DO COUNT. I KNOW Cruz is whip-smart, I KNOW he has the Constitution memorized, I KNOW he is one of the most, if not THE most, conservative person in the race, but something about him just screams at me NO. The only way I can ‘visualize’ it, is everything about him just looks ‘droopy’ to me....does that make sense? His entire face looks like it’s about to melt into a wax puddle. Somebody up thread mentioned play-doh. Exactly. I really like what Trump is doing, but as the days progress, I’m not so sure he has the temperament for the job, which leaves me at a loss as to whom to support. I will continue to read FR, and watch what the candidates do. By the time my primary comes around (Washington State) it’s usually a done deal and my vote doesn’t count anyway. One thing I know for sure, I WON’T vote for Jeb, or Rubio. Just that simple.
To me, it isn’t even Cruz’s looks. It is his way about him. hard to explain, but there is something that really bugs me about him. Maybe it is a disingenuous look he has.
We are not alone. What people say sometimes can blind you to other things.
I have heard people call it “spidey sense”.
People DO have instinctual reactions to other people, and it’s very difficult to set them aside when they’re strong.
I had a flash of something the night Cruz announced, which I’ve tried to discount because I appreciated his intellect and conservatism. But at one point, I saw the same kind of self-congratulation and smugness that we used to see in John Edwards.
I’m not in any way suggesting that Cruz is morally like Edwards turned out to be; but I just had a feeling that he’s extremely ‘satisfied’ with himself in a way that puts me off. I can’t even come up with a word that precisely fits; it’s not exactly self congratulation or smugness, but almost a sense of, ‘Damn, I’m good!’
Do you remember how Edwards always used to be stroking his own face?
(And no, I don’t have that kind of feeling about Trump; he’s just a bit of a dork in some ways.)

Yow. Now that’s scary.
You and I are on the same page.
I remember some journalist (can’t remember who) wrote some article about Trump and said she liked his style because he wasn’t adverse to making ugly faces.
I really had to laugh hard at that one. My spidey sense does not get the bad vibes from Trump. Probably because he doesn’t seem to hide how he really feels.
One thing we do know about Psychologists.....they write papers...and then they write again, again, and again seeking the ultimate high of Notoriety among their peers and their various publications.....if they don’t write they don’t make any money.
I think when you’ve lived life so many years it’s pretty easy to read body language if you’re paying attention to individuals you’re speaking with. And you also learn that ones profession also determines if or not their body language will match what they’re saying.
We know Cruz’s basic temperment is not one that gets rattled easily, let alone show it when he is....If you observe hi working in Congress etc. you see he generally keeps them guessing one way or the other of what he’ll say next....you won’t be able to tell by his expressions....and even when speaking his face doesn’t reveal always what he’s saying.......this in fact is a learned trait many lawyers have.
Hahaha...
I kept on waiting for him to light up a cigar...
One word.....
...UNCTUOUS
That’s my opinion of Cruz
The fact that that hunk could become the Drew Carey of ca. 1999—scary.
“To God be the glory!” Pause for crowd to applaud me for my courage, piety, etc.
