Why Steve King Endorsed Ted Cruz — And Not Ben Carson or Donald Trump

ABC News(DES MOINE, Iowa) — Congressman Steve King has endorsed Ted Cruz for President — saying Cruz is the "answer to my prayers" and that Ben Carson and Donald Trump's lack of Washington, D.C., experience makes the job "harder" for them.

"I do believe that Ted Cruz is the full package, the constitutional conservative that can restore the soul of America," King told reporters in a conference room at the Des Moines Marriott.

King is an influential voice in Iowa politics who was courted by many conservative Republicans, including Bobby Jindal, Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee. He said he made his decision Friday following a foreign trip to Europe where "I saw the erosion of the culture...because of the colossal cultural suicide they're committing." King was asked why he decided not to endorse either of the two Republican frontrunners, Ben Carson or Donald Trump, whose beliefs align with his.

“It’s going to be harder for either one of them to see what’s going on in Washington, D.C., in K street, in the network," King said. "What's going on in the House and Senate and how does that get leveraged from the executive branch. I don’t hear either one of them talking about the balance of powers between the executive, the legislative and the judicial branches of government. And I don’t hear them talking about Supreme Court appointments.....

Cruz voted for TPA, Patriot Act and handed out teddy bears to illegal invaders as they crossed our southern borders. Cruz wants a 500% increase in HIB visas, Trump not so much. And Ford is not going to build that Plant in Mexico, thank Trump for those US jobs saved. Name one job Cruz has saved.

Cruz voted against TPA, and is for suspending H1-B visas and limiting legal immigration as long as American workers are unemployed. He is also for deportation and a wall.

When he says “lack of Washington, D.C., experience” as the basis of his decision then he is being out of touch with the current electorate mood. Just saying.

No, Rep. King is being practical.

To get things done in Washington, one must understand the relationships, the buttons to push and the nature and range of one's own power.

Without that knowledge and understanding -- and the ability to adapt to the situation -- there will be a lot of unproductive flailing and failure.

Though he has been a senator for three years, Cruz is absolutely not "out of touch" AND he has the experience to know how to get what he promises to the people.

Which explains Rep. King's endorsement...

You're overstating or misrepresenting. You ought to know better.

And Ford is not going to build that Plant in Mexico, thank Trump for those US jobs saved. Name one job Cruz has saved.

You might want to review the Supreme Court cases that Cruz argued...and won.

Look, I'm a Cruz supporter. But I would happily vote for Trump, if he's the nominee. Further, I'm not going to try to help my guy by tearing down the other guy. And I don't much appreciate those who do.

You’re out of touch
I’m out of time
But I’m out of my head when you’re not around
You’re out of touch
I’m out of time (time)
But I’m out of my head when you’re not around
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
