Debates Put Ted Cruz in the Top Tier
Morning Consult ^ | November 3, 2015 | Reid Wilson

Posted on 11/04/2015 8:44:54 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

During his long-shot bid for a U.S. Senate seat, Ted Cruz captured the affections of conservatives through his unmatched ability to reach a right-leaning audience. His presence on stage catapulted a novice politician above several more seasoned candidates.

Now, four years later, Cruz’s skills on the debate stage have vaulted him into the top tier of the Republican presidential nominating contest. After scoring the single biggest applause line of the evening at last week’s debate on CNBC — blasting the moderators while repeating their assaults on his fellow candidates — new surveys show Cruz’s support ballooning, and his popularity surging.

The rookie senator still trails retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and real estate mogul Donald Trump, but several polls out this week show Cruz leading, or virtually tied with, every other elected official in the field.

A Morning Consult tracking poll released Tuesday shows Cruz in third place, with 9 percent of the vote, up six points from the week before and just ahead of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R), each of whom take 7 percent. An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll also out Tuesday shows Cruz at 10 percent, twice the support he registered in September and just behind Rubio’s 11 percent.

Rubio’s performance at all three Republican debates have landed him a spot in the top tier as well. The NBC/Wall Street Journal survey shows Rubio’s support growing from 5 percent in July, before the first televised debate on Fox News, to 11 percent today.

But a deeper look at recent polls suggests Cruz’s rise isn’t over yet — and may even be understated. He receives 16 percent of the vote nationally among voters who describe themselves as very conservative, and 22 percent among voters who identify as Tea Party supporters, according to the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll. Those two cohorts are disproportionately likely to show up to vote in nominating contests, said Fred Yang, one half of the bipartisan pair of pollsters who conducted the survey.

“I think our polling shows Carson and Trump have real support across an impressive swath of the GOP electorate,” Yang said. “But if we are looking for the next man up, it is likely to be Ted Cruz.”

Cruz’s standing is improving in states, too: In New Hampshire, Monmouth University found Cruz in fifth place, at 9 percent, three times higher than in a July poll by Monmouth. Only Rubio and Carson saw a greater increase in support. In Iowa, a Public Policy Polling automated call survey showed Cruz in third place, at 14 percent, almost double the 8 percent he notched in mid-September.

Cruz’s improving standing are evident below the surface, too: In the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, 57 percent of Republican voters said they could see themselves supporting Cruz in a primary, up 12 points from September. Rubio, by contrast, has seen his percentage of possible supporters drop, from a high of 74 percent in April to 59 percent today.

Among Republican voters, 54 percent say they view Cruz favorably, tied with Rubio and higher than any other Republican contender except Carson and Trump.

Cruz’s polling bumps appear tied most directly to his performance on the debate stage, rather than to paid advertising. Cruz’s campaign and its affiliated super PACs have raised hefty amounts of money, but they have yet to begin a sustained advertising blitz on television or radio.

On Tuesday, one of the three big PACs backing Cruz released eight new radio ads, backed by about $1 million, to air in early primary states and on national conservative programs hosted by Rush Limbaugh and Laura Ingraham.

Nice try. Harvard educated Attorney. First term U.S. Senator. Wife who is a Goldman Sachs Wall Street Analyst. Biggest contributors are Trial Lawyers. Most hated Senator on both sides of the aisle in U.S. Senate (Not necessarily a Negative). Zero record of accomplishments. Great talker, but that’s it. Forget Him !

I have been studying the Cruz tax plan. I think the closest plan to FAIR tax in the context we still have a crappie 16th amendment.

1. Taxes business revenue, not income (sales tax)

a. Will repatriate oversees USD
2. Eliminates payroll tax
3. Allows $25K per year saved tax deductible.
4. No need for IRS to monitor special interest groups, deductions gone and organizations won’t be taxed unless they sell things. 5. Eliminate the IRS- can happen because all deductions are gone

Rush Limbaugh was right on target when he said that some Republicans hate Cruz because he's too conservative for them.

It's why you troll Cruz threads with your hysterical, ineffective ankle-biting.

Cruz is moving up in the polls, slowly but surely, which is exactly in accordance with the long campaign game he plays. Better get used to it; have your drool rag in your pocket.

Bump.

I’m getting tired of the repeated tropes, that Cruz isn’t to be trusted because his wife had at one time worked for Goldman Sachs (as if that by itself is bad, much less the fact it wasn’t TED who worked for them but his wife; guilt by association much?), because he has “zero accomplishments” and is “hated in the Senate”, both of which are arguably UNtrue (depends how one defines “accomplishments” because just limited to the Senate maybe, but that’s pretty understandable even if true because he’s “hated” there and that really ISNT a bad thing), or that his “biggest donors are trial lawyers”. (Haven’t seen one scintilla of evidence for that).

Does he have issues? Sure no ones perfect but he has only just as much (if not LESS) than “The Donald” and quite frankly he’s not as boorish.

I’m chalking all the anti-Cruz trolling to the strange (yet predictable) appearance of never-before seen screen names who pop up around major elections to voice their “concerns”.

And give it that much credit.

Well, you know, to be fair, that Heidi Cruz is one sinister woman. I heard she works for the Bilderbergers and moonlights for the Illuminati while doing part-time hosting duties at the Bohemian Grove. I have NIGHTMARES about Heidi Cruz!

Looks like Old Retired Army Guy IS one of the moderate sleazebags Rush was talking about who are terrified of Cruz...note the time-honored use of the word "purist" to describe his supporters:

" There are actually some people who are conservative “purists” that delude themselves into thinking someone like Ted Cruz can be elected to President in 2016. I am old enough to remember when that same kind of passion nominated Barry Goldwater thinking he could defeat Lyndon Johnson and sweep in a consevative wave. We all saw how that went and therefore got “The Great Society”."

” Zero record of accomplishments. Great talker, but that’s it. Forget Him !”

Put the hat back on your head because you are talking through it. His record as a senator fighting Washington, his record appearing before the Supreme Court, his intellect, debating skills and Conservative principles elevate him.

Go back to the Trump threads where you can blather.

Biggest contributors are Trial Lawyers.

Actually, his biggest contributors are Club for Growth and the US Conservatives Fund. The big law firms among his top donors gave a lot less than those two organizations, which gave more than all the law firms in his top ten put together.

Rounding out the Top 10 are a couple of financial organizations, a gravel company and an energy firm.

Cruz is not conservative when it counts,

You mean the Ted Cruz that voted to reauthorize the unconstitutional Patriot Act or the Ted Cruz that voted to give Obama fast track authority to negotiate job killing trade deals or maybe you are thinking of the Ted Cruz that wants a 500% increase in H1B vasas (what does Ted Cruz have against working Americans?) and how about that Amnesty Ted handing out teddy bears and soccer balls to the illegal invaders as they crossed our southern border.

She still works for [Goldmann Sachs]...She's on a leave of absense...

Again, so what?

How could you not [have seen the evidence showing Cruz's biggest donors are trial lawyers]??? You look the other way when those things are posted on FR???

Instead of berating me, thus wasting my time and yours, for missing some post somewhere on FR among the literally thousands that get posted every week, why don't you just post the "evidence"?

Ahhh...So you're one of those offended by Trumps tone of voice...

I'm not offended by his voice as much as sick of how he uses it, kind of like how an adult gets tired of hearing kids swear. Maybe it's "funny" or "cute" the first few times but eventually adults tire of it; and put a stop to it by the way.

You got any thing of substance why Cruz stands out???

Talk about "missing posts on FR"! Are you kidding me? Are you really challenging the notion that Ted Cruz has conservative bona fides?

At this point I could do as you did to me, end this post to you in a combative tone, but I'll actually provide evidence for my claim of Cruz's conservatism. You might want to start here for instance: Accomplishments.

I'll also even say this (as I have before on other threads): I have no problem, ultimately, with the idea of voting for Trump if forced to do so by circumstance. I don't doubt, for example, he's more conservative than Bush, or Christie, and also if it comes down to Carson vs Trump (in my state), then I'm voting for Trump no question! But I don't see a reason to take him as my first choice if Ted Cruz is in the race.

Since I think amnesty will kill the nation I am going with Trump, not Ted. Ted refuses to say that he would enforce existing immigration laws so I am pretty sure Ted favors amnesty and I refuse to vote for any candidate not willing to enforce our laws, protect our nation and it constitution. So that rules out “conservative only when it does not count” Ted.
