Sarah Palin close behind Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann in Iowa

Sarah Palin is still in the running with GOP voters, even though she hasn’t made up her mind whether she’s even a presidential candidate.

Most of the latest Iowa polls place Palin in third place behind former Bay State Gov. Mitt Romney and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

Depending on which poll you turn to, Romney and Bachmann are neck-and-neck. (The Des Moines Register has Romney with 23 percent to Bachmann’s 22 percent.)

Palin, however, is quietly hovering close behind with about 15 percent of the vote.

While Palin sits on the sidelines, both Bachmann and Romney are making news — and pocketing support — slamming President Obama for how he’s handling the anemic economy.

In fact, Romney even pulls ahead of Obama in a poll asking voters who they’d vote for today.

If (hoping when) Gov. Palin announces, I think Romney’s numbers will disappear to the Twilight Zone. Oh, and the liberal’s heads will explode, that’s a bonus.

I do hope conservatives will quickly pull behind one candidate and not knock each other off, letting a liberal get the nomination. I’m okay with Bachmann, Palin, Cain, even Perry but we can’t have them all pulling 5%-7% and leaving Mitt with 25-30% or he’ll become the nominee before we realize it.

These are interesting times, they are.

I am not so sure that Bachmann voters go to Palin. If Free Republic is any indication it would appear that Bachmann's base is the far right social conservative ideologue. These are the people who generally stay home.

It is possible that there is a Bachmann fear factor that is driving people to Mitt right now. I believe that the Governor could pick off some Romney voters, but the biggest loser would be Herman Cain, Santorum and the other 2 or 3 percenters.

Appropriate tag line. According to the polls, Bachmann takes her support from a combination of Mitt and Palin. Most Palin votes swing to Bachmann if she stays out and vice-versa.

The actual far-right socially conservative ideologues (also known as the southern evangelical voting bloc) go to Perry first, although it is quite likely that they would default to Palin or Bachmann (in that order) if Perry does not run.

The only primary candidate who has made any inroads into Mitt's support base is Bachmann, likely due to her iron-clad fiscal voting record. Including Perry in the polls does not affect Mitt's numbers. He only draws support out from under Palin & Bachmann, and for the most part only in the South and Lower Midwest.

Perry has yet to break out of the single digits along the northern tier of states. His support is so low there that he probably wouldn't carry any of those states even if Bachmann dropped out and endorsed him.

Why be a jerk?

The poll comparisons I have seen showed an even distribution of Palin supporters going to 3 or 4 candidates. Polls are useless as far as I am concerned. Too far out.

I was referring to Bachmann's core support and added the caveat that if FR was any indication. With a few exceptions the Palin supporters will offer a second or third choice. Not so much with the Bachmann supporters.
