Poll: Younger voters dissatisfied with Obama's handling of the economy

A new poll found that a majority of younger voters disapprove of President Obama's handling of the economy.

The results suggest Republicans have an opportunity to win back some of the younger voters who backed Obama in 2008. Obama vowed on the campaign trail to change Washington, but 69 percent of poll respondents contend that leaders in the nation's capital are failing to serve their generation.

Roughly 23.4 million 18-29 year-olds cast their votes in 2008, marking the highest turnout of young voters in modern presidential history. Young people made up about 18 percent of the electorate in 2008, and Obama won this age bracket by 34 percentage points. The president will be hard-pressed to do that again in 2012.

Forty-four percent of respondents disapprove of the president's handling of youth unemployment while only 31 percent approved, according to the poll conducted by the polling company, inc./womantrend on behalf of Generation Opportunity, a youth mobilization group.

Sixty-one percent of respondents said they would place higher priority on a candidate’s position on issues and record in office, rather than charisma and likability when they cast their vote for president next year.

"With high unemployment and high uncertainty, there's a lot of dissatisfaction among young people," said Paul T. Conway, the president of Generation Opportunity.....

I remember reading a survey of highschool students living in CA which said that graduating seniors anticipated getting their first job with a corner window office and 50K starting salary because TV often featured nice offices etc. I wondered what that cohort would feel when they encountered Obama’s economic reality.

>>Reality bites.<<

“MOMMM! Look here! I am supposed to get $400 a week but I only have $225! I can’t even afford to pay the rent we agreed on”

“Yes, son, that is called ‘taxes being deducted’”

“But what is this huge amount for something called SDI?”

“Also taxes.”

“Why do I have to pay so much in taxes?”

“Because you have to work to pay for others that won’t work!”

“THAT ISN’T FAIR!”

“Who did you vote for for President when you turned 18 back in 2008?”

“Obama”

“Well, you pay for what you got, don’t you?” (fans of Gov. Palin can substitute “doncha?” with a wink :) )

Well now... venturing into the real world reveals some interesting realities, doesn’t it, youngsters? How about looking for something along the line of actual SUBSTANCE next time... whaddaya say?

Or will you buy into the vapid “hope and change” mantra again?

btw, exactly WHO thought letting 18 year old’s,
(in our current “delayed adulthood” society),
to vote, was a good idea?

...even many Democrats don’t trust 18-year-olds to drink.

yet trust them to make informed decisions about issues?
they are mature and experienced enough (even if they are living with their parents still),
to do the most important job of citizens in this great country?

Could it be that they found out they owe $46,202.39 before they even get out of college? In better terms, it would take 389 years to pay off the debt if they paid $100 million per day.

I troll on a forum where there are a lot of 20-somethings.

Two yrs ago Baraq was God.
Last yr it was still Bush’s fault.
This yr some common sense is seeping in.

Personally I think Baraq has “zero” chance in a 2-way race.
I am quite worried that he may pull off a Clintonian plurality in a 3-way race.

I don’t think any of us aged 60 and above will ever see any real recovery.

Well, they need to look at it this way. Having a college diploma and not being able to find a job is “historical”. We’re some “history” making fools in this country these days.

If they are old enough to serve in the military they should have a right to vote and to have a beer.

Between:

1. A over-bloated government with too much bureaucratic overlap, agency bloat and too many regulations.
2. A business-unfriendly income tax system.
3. An out-of-control Wall Street that has its own financial interests in mind at the expense of the rest of the economy.

No wonder we're in economic doldrums. The is why we need to streamline government to reduce its cost to the economy, overhaul taxation to reduce compliance cost and encourage American residents and businesses to keep their savings and capital investments in the USA, and whatever government is left put the hammer down on the financial sector to stop the runaway financial shenanigans that caused the 1929 and 2008 stock market crashes.

I am not expecting them to vote for us too much of a stretch for young skulls full of mush but with no or little enthusiasm zero is toast.
