Perry Could Raise Texas-Sized Cash

On the Tea Party side of the GOP, the noise is all about Texas Gov. Rick Perry. While there are devotees of Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann, Perry is the kind of mainstream-acceptable candidate the movement would need to prevail in the presidential contest.

With the Wall Street Journal doing a takeout piece on Perry, the east coast media is waking up a bit to Perry’s potential in a still unsettled field.

Perry’s peeps are measuring the possibilities for a campaign, especially given the high cost associated with taking on the deep pockets of Mitt Romney. But one former and potentially future consultant to the governor told Power Play that the money would be there.

The theory is that if Perry could use support from the oil industry and the other booming businesses of Texas to provide seed money, he could launch the kind of low-dollar national fundraising appeal that could quickly build a war chest while simultaneously enhancing his profile with Republicans.

“Running from Texas is not like running from any other state,” the former adviser said.

It's seems that Fox is suddenly pushing for the GOP to nominate a "mainstream" candidate.

Perry’s OK - admittedly better than the other “establishment” guys, but he seems weak on immigration, and definitely beholden to big money interests more than I like.

Still, he’d be far better than Obama...but I really don’t think he’ll run, nor do I particularly want him to.

I’ve accepted Perry as an eventuality... not that I’m happy with it.

I’ve read that Texas, economically, is doing well. Is this due to Perry’s credit or just his good fortune?

Like hell he’s better than the other mainstream candidates. He’s Mitt Romney in Texas... except Mitt Romney can reasonably claim he had to be Mitt Romney to get elected in Massachusetts. Why would a governor from Texas...

... Have to force 11-year-old girls to get vaccinated for STDs, even against their parents consent?...

... Oppose not only immigration-law enforcement, but even teaching immigrants in English?...

... Push for a superhighway to allow Mexican truckers to ship drugs and illegals straight into America’s heartland, bypassing border control, at a cost of tens of billions to American taxpayers?

Rick Perry is no conservative; he’s just a puppet of corporations who don’t want to pay taxes. There’s a big difference, the difference between freedom and fascism. He knows no limits to the government’s ability to regulate, protect cronies’ marketshares, or to flaunt the public will.

He can roast in Hell, for all I care, but I will never vote for his destruction of conservatism. Better we have a socialist in the White House and conservatives representing dissent, than a fascist in the White House and the socialists representing the dissent.

That depends... did Rick Perry put all that oil under Texas? Is he responsible for the millions of conservatives electing Republican legislators? The Chinese economy is growing quickly too, but I’m not about to elect a fascist president, whether he’s Chinese or Texan.

God help me, I’d nominate McCain or Romney, first.

Perry is the new mainstream candidate. Rush had a seminar caller who goes by the name “Vinny” on twice in two weeks trashing Palin and promoting Perry. Based on the premise that the media have totally destroyed Palin and she is unelectable. I’m sure that Perry (a white governor from the South – Texas of all places - running against St. Barak) is considered untouchable by the MSM. I just want Rove’s boyfriend to stop calling Rush and promoting Perry

Dangus is right. Perry has several chinks in his armor over the course of his ten years as governor, but on economic can-do, he has been very aggressive! In fact, that would be his excuse for supporting the universally hated TransTexas Corridor.

The Gardasil thing he supported is much harder to explain, making the shots mandatory on little girls through the state as they enroll in school at nine years old. It seemed to me he was used as a pawn by the pharmaceutical company who produced the dang stuff in the shot and fell for their sales pitch. Thanks to our conservative legislature both these issues went down in flames. The Bush machine, for whatever shape it’s in, has never been supportive of Perry. That’s a plus in my book. RINOs won’t like him but will sure be willing to court him if Pawlenty or Romney don’t catch on fire before long.

Would he bring sanity and independence back to the USA fiscally speaking? You Betcha’!

Again, I like having Perry as our governor instead of Bill White. That does not mean I think he will function well in the White House. Texas is full of reasonable, free-thinking individuals, and always runs itself well as long as we don’t let the whacko’s elect a progressive commie.

Perry has some baggage in his own state...so let’s not get too hasty! Main stream candidates got us where we are! Let’s not forget that!

you’d put Romney or McCain ahead of Rick Perry? How possibly could you possibly place those two leftist ahead of Perry. I lived in Texas for a period of Perry’s term, so I understand he is not perfect, but he’s generally right on most issues, and got better over time on some of his weaknesses. Romney helped take Massachusetts further left as governor, and McCain is a walking disaster, agreeing with the Dems on critical issues after critical issue...and did a huge amount of damage to our side during the Bush years.

There can be more than one...Bill Clemlents just kept calling them back until they got agreement...I think they last 30 days, but not sure.

Perry better get his mind of DC, and start shoving through the legislation that needs to get on the books...Texans are very angry the TSA bill din’t get shoved through, plus some others.

"Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann"

So, suddenly people running who share the majority opinion on pretty much every issue nationally are outside of the mainstream? When is anyone in the MSM (including Fox) going to identify Obama as out of the mainstream. A poll this week showed only 24% identify with his views. Seems like he is the one the furthest away from American thinking.

So sick of this BS from the media.

Perry needs to send Seal Team Six to retrieve his nuts from Jan Brewers purse.

Perry is a master at the RINO kabuki dance that is immigration politics in Texas.

He is NOT to be trusted.

I'm curious about the sanctuary cities legislation, if he passes that, I'll admit, I'd take a whole new look at him. It would change the dynamic about him. Sarah Palin (of her own volition and without prompting) already said she really likes him and sounded happy talking about him, so we'll see what happens.

If he puts together a red mean conservative special legislative session, that would be a big start if he is going to run for Pres, or is just screwing around, for a VP slot.

I just want Rove’s boyfriend to stop calling Rush and promoting Perry.

Karl Rove hates Perry, and thats not rumor.

As has been noted on other boards, both Rove and Bush had a nickname for Perry............."dumbass".

Note,I have to double check this, but I think Rove even endorsed his primary opponent in the last election, and I do know for a fact that George HW Bush certainly did, along with most of the Bush administration.

"Rick Perry is a leader. While the nation lost half a million jobs in the last year, Texas gained 250,000 net new jobs. He improved the job climate in Texas by refusing to raise taxes in the face of the largest budget deficit in Texas history. He had the foresight to join legislators in saving for a rainy day. And he has consistently asked agency heads to cut their budgets even when surpluses were rolling in. My fellow Republicans, that’s consistent leadership. That's Rick Perry." Sarah Palin
