Winners and losers: The August 24 primary edition (#1: Sarah Palin)
The Washington Post's The Fix ^ | August 25, 2010 | Chris Cillizza

Posted on 08/25/2010 8:26:10 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It was an amazing night -- and morning -- as the final primary day of the summer delivered a series of upsets in Senate, gubernatorial and House races.

The Fix is still a little groggy from our live-blogging of the proceedings but we are never too tired to sift through election results to find some of the less obvious winners and losers from the primary night that was.

Our take is below. Have winners and losers of your own? The comments section awaits.

WINNERS

Sarah Palin: Just when it looked like her influence in Republican primary fights was fading, Palin came back with a vengeance last night -- as all five of her endorsed candidates appeared headed to victories including Alaska attorney Joe Miller who led Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski with 98 percent of precincts reporting. Both Murkowski and Miller blamed/credited Palin with the result, which is rightly seen as the biggest upset of the 2010 cycle to date. The message? In Republican primaries -- particularly small turnout affairs -- the energy and enthusiasm that Palin can help create is invaluable.

Kendrick Meek: Meek's wide victory over billionaire Jeff Greene in last night's Senate Democratic primary in Florida should convince (at least some) of the doubters who don't think he has a chance to be competitive against former state House Speaker Marco Rubio (R) and Gov. Charlie Crist (I) this fall. And, given the wildly unpredictable nature of the Florida political landscape, anyone who tells you what is going to happen next in the Senate race (or any race) in the state is just not telling the truth.

Sure, you of all people, know that is reality. So, how does one “buck” reality? You have to outsmart and outlast it. Being timid, and yes, holding to “principles” won’t break the dam. Sad, but this is war and “all is fair.....etc”. We are not going to turn the country around in one election cycle. It took the Progressives 100 years to get where they are. So, what are our options? Do we admit defeat and hold on to our principles, or do we fight with everything we can muster, including pragmatism, for as long as it takes?

well we can’t have everything. The only good to come out of Az race is that the this should be McCain’s last term. If JD would have won Az voters would be spending the next 40 years trying to get rid of him like they have McCain.

So, you cannot or will not say who you like/endorse, but you can sure say who you don’t like. Yeah, that is a bit transparent.

Pot... Meet kettle.

Actually it's not that way. You are demanding that I answer a question that is purely theoretical. I have no idea who's running and neither do you. All you "who are you supporting" posters think that Palin is running but, as of yet, she's not.

You are supporting someone for president who may not run. It would seem to me that those of us who can't answer that question are a heck of lot more honest than you guys. We don't know who to support while you've hitched your wagon to someone that has not made any declaration at all.

Go ahead, continue putting Palin on a pedestal. You guys sound more and more like Obama's zombies every day.

No, we adhere to non-negotiable principles no matter what.

As George Washington said:

"Let us raise a standard to which the wise and honest can repair; the rest is in the hands of God."

If all the Christians in the country would simply do this, the nation would be transformed politically and governmentally practically overnight. We are still a majority you know.

But no, too many still listen to the constant siren song of the phony "pragmatists," who, while having a semblance of wisdom, are actually not wise at all. They're simply short-sighted and self-serving. And they're the ones who are primarily responsible for the fact that our free republic is being destroyed before our very eyes.

You should get a job at MSNBC. They’d love to have you. They need people who can bash Sarah all day long, all night long, and never get tired of repeating the same 3 or 4 bashing points over and over and over and over and over and over again.

It takes a talent, of sorts, to be able to do that.

Not very much IQ, but a certain talent, of sorts.

Arizonans heard almost nothing but Sarah Palin's voice in praise of John Judas for months. Incessantly.
That's total MSM-style BS that Palin "handed" AZ to McCain.

You don't know a f*ing thing about AZ, obviously.

My take on the McCain-Hayworth race is that McCain was going to win even without Palin’s support. I wish she had not supported him, but I understand the concept of loyalty so I’m not totally ready to throw over Palin because she paid back a political debt.

Hayworth, despite his conservative credentials, wasn’t a very good candidate. He had some baggage from that Abramoff business, and those late nights ads he did made him look like a used car salesman. Sometimes you can have the right positions, but people just don’t like you. I think Hayworth was that guy. Still, we owe him a debt of gratitude. If he had not run, and forced McCain to the right, McCain probably would have helped Obama institute amnesty and Cap and Tax over the summer.

And you are dissing someone who has not yet announced. My wagon is not hitched, but as I have stated before, Mrs. Palin is the best possible of the possible candidates I see so far. I hope she runs, and if she does, I will vote for her despite the fact that she is not the “perfect” candidate. But then again, no candidate is perfect.

And as far as honesty goes, as of yet not one of the posters that make a mini-career out of anti-Palin posts has had the gonads to say which possible candidate they support, or would support. Somehow, and call me jaded, but I am willing to bet that the reason for such conduct is that they know that they would get their BS thrown right back at them.

You are absolutely right to push the “preferred candidate” question. Since Palin is at least one obvious choice (not THE choice, of course, it’s still way too early to have “the” choice), it’s interesting that the Palin bashers are so shy about their own choices.

My guess is it comes down to 2:

Ron Paul (and yes, I gagged as I typed that name)

Mitt Romney (and yes, I gagged again)

Most of the Palin bashers fall into one of those 2 camps and are too freaking chicken to publicly admit it, at least not when they are in “bash Palin” mode.

Anyway, keep up the good work.

It’s nice to see someone who still believes that human beings are capable of being “good”. Unfortunately, we only have the capacity for self interest. All have sinned and fall short. Keep holding onto your principles, friend. We still need those who tilt at windmills.

Not that your reply deserves a reply, but for whatever it is worth, I never have supported McCain. I, for one, think we have more important matters to deal with than bashing any conservative. So go take your nap, you’ll feel better - or not...

I have thought that the PDS types were Mitt Romney supporters, but were not inclined to state that here. In my observations of the PDS posters, only a couple seem “off” enough to support Ron Paul.

I’m not going to name names but I know of at least one here who supports Paul {gag} on other topics but never mentions it when bashing Palin.

I think I know that particular poster.

I just wish he/she had the guts to stand up for someone instead of bloody PDS 24/7. I have a pretty good idea who is in what camp, and I also have a pretty good idea who is bashing Palin at every chance just because they can and think it’s funny. It’s not, and it will not be forgotton. Take that to the bank, win, lose or draw.

All it proves is that she has enough “Reagan” in her to be a potentially GREAT American leader.

“thous shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican” -Reagan’s 11th commandment

viscerally I don’t much like it. Practically-its impossible to govern big without it.

One of the favorites floated by this crowd is Senator Jim DeMint who, like Sarah Palin, is a rock-ribbed Conservative. Others are Ron Paul supporters, a few Mitt Romney backers, and a handful of local-Congressman-X-for-President folks.

The problem is that most of them have gone so over-the-top in their criticisms of Sarah Palin, demands for absolute perfection, moving of the goalposts, and impossible standards, that nobody could pass their test(s) anymore. Heck, DeMint tried to give us all Romneycare, and was pimping Grahamnesty on America back when we had a shot to oust him in the primaries. He just helped recruit RINO Dino Rossi in WA to defeat tea Party favorite Clint Didier. Inhofe was early and fast behind Fiorina in California. Ron Paul? Well......do we even need to go there? The list is endless....why? Because nobody is perfect.

These candidates, however, will all get as many “mulligans” as required from this same crowd that won't accept anything less than godlike perfection from Sarah Palin. She can't have any “mulligans,” though, no sir! But let's get real, the exact same people would still be blasting Sarah even if she had endorsed Hayworth, because they just don't like her, period. It's just that the McCain endorsement lets them pretend they have an actual justification for their PDS.

They'll quickly forget their litmus tests and impossible standards, and suddenly adopt a new level of forgiveness, if/when “their guy” is in the running. Grahamnesty could be the filibuster-breaking vote that puts a 5th Communist on the Supreme Court, but you can bet your ass they won't hold it against Jim DeMint.

It's personal, and it's personal against Sarah Palin.

Yeah, so? She's a public figure making public statements. I am not "dissing" her with respect to her possible presidential run but the comments and people she has chosen to support. Good grief! You members of the Palin Protectorate are hysterical and not in the "funny" sense of the word.

So you live in an alternate universe? She wiped the floor with Joe Biden, who’d been on the national scene for decades, whereas she just got there.
