A minor incident occurred at the Kerry Town Hall Meeting in Houston on March 6th. The Houston Chronicle reported it as follows: Promised protests failed to materialize, although three demonstrators were ejected from the event after unfurling a banner that read, "Vietnam Veterans Are Not Fonda Kerry," a reference to conservative attempts to link Kerry's opposition to the war to actress Jane Fonda.
There is no reason to expect accuracy or veracity from an information source that turned the Tet Offensive from a Communist disaster to a Communist victory, but the truth should be worth the extra effort. What should have been reported was: Three Vietnam Veterans, all former Army Special Forces Officers, were ejected from the event [a town hall meeting] because they were wearing buttons that read Vietnam Veterans Against Kerry. As the vets were leaving, they unfurled a banner that read Vietnam Veterans Are Not Fonda Kerry, after which they joined their former South Vietnamese allies who were protesting Kerrys single-handed blockage of a human rights amendment against the Communist Government of Vietnam. After the audience was rid of any potential dissenters, Candidate Kerry entered, to convene his scripted event.

Check into the book on LBJ that was made from his tapes. He secured a letter of agreement from the Houston Comical that they would not criticize his administration in exchange for allowing a bank merger to go through.
The paper is a waste of trees.

Well, here's another Vietnam Veteran That Is Not Fonda Kerry. Kerrys group of Viet Nam buddies definitely do not speak for me or many of my Viet Nam Buddies.

Well, we certainly can't expect the Houston Comical to tell us the real facts.
I got so tired of it's 3-1 or 4-1, liberal vs conservative bias in its editorials that I finally canceled, that was over 2 yrs ago. It's only gotten worse!
It has its very own Teddie Chappy Kennedy, his alias is Craig Fat-Turd Hines!

Here, let's flesh that charge out a little, and ping it again:

He knew, too, how to pull on the pursestrings. Pressed by financial backer George Brown, chairman of Brown & Root, to approve a merger of two Houston banks sought by John Jones, president of the Houston Chronicle, Johnson proposes a quid pro quo: "I want John Jones to write me a letter . . . saying, 'Mr. President . . . I just want you to know that we're making arrangements for special coverage in Washington for the Chronicle . . . and that so far as I'm personally concerned and the paper's concerned, it's going to support your administration as long as you're there. Sincerely, your friend, John Jones.'" When Johnson gets the letter he wants, he phones Jones. "From here on out," he tells him, "we're partners." "Thank you," Jones replies. "Sure are." (Five days later, the merger went through.)

Thanks for fleshing that out. Remarkable job, actually.
I read things and hear editors discuss them but don't always have all of the names to go with the events. When I search for all of the specifics, it can take me hours (and possibly even days at times).
I don't spread "rumors" but sometimes only provide details when I am challenged on the facts. In most instances where I did the research for a response, there is NO reply to my post.
Some people may not have heard about this bit of bias from Houston's only daily newspaper (at the time there was at least one competing daily paper). I think it was Lynn Ashby, who became editor of the Houston Post, that discussed this story on the air (when Roger Grey had an FM talk radio station). I do recall that Lynn Ashby was criticizing the current downtown businessmen (who are continuing to take this city to the cleaners to line their own pockets).
Maybe if the Post had done more to publicly separate it's views from those of the downtown funded Chronicle, more people may have bought it.
The left certainly never complained about the way the Clinton Administration okayed all of these newspaper mergers as not creating a monopoly in the communities. Only radio (Rush Limbaugh's current syndicator, Clear Channel, specifically) is considered a monopoly in their eyes.

If this is true, why in the hell am I just now hearing it? Please cite which book and who gave this information. Dan Patrick of KSEV will be most interested in getting it. He and many of us are on a rampage about the Houston Chronicle. Either we'll bring them to their knees with the cancellation of subscriptions, or they will be discredited by their relentless biased reporting through other news outlets.

See post #9 in this thread. Someday we may need to start up a website (like the one that tracks Metrorail accidents) to track instances of documented Houston Chronicle bias (the rail memo that got posted to their website a couple years ago also would be ripe).
