Poetry and Potpourri ........ September 22, 2003

.................................................................

The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

Thanks for pinging me, MistyCA. I'm not quite sure how I ended up on your list, but I am glad that you brought me here. This looks like a pleasant place to come at the end of the day.

JustAmy, I would like to offer a prayer for your Poetry and Potpourri thread, and I wish you the best of luck.

Cherokee Prayer Blessing

May the warm winds of heaven
Blow softly upon your house.
May the Great Spirit
Bless all who enter there.
May your moccasins
Make happy tracks
In many snows,
And may the rainbow
Always touch your shoulder.

(what's the 'Belv?')

The 'Belv' is in reference to the dining club car in the opening of this thread. : )

I don't want to be pinged to poetry.

Your MistyCa graphic is a huge waste of bandwidth for dialup users. At 140KB, it will take a dialup user 26.41 seconds to download the graphic, stalling their browser in the meantime. And every time they hit Refresh on their My Comments page, it will take another 26.41 seconds to refresh it, depending on their browser settings. But that is what will happen to most users.

I suggest you remove the graphic from your website or rename it so you aren't plaguing us all with your bandwidth-hogging graphic.

And it is so wide that it pushes the sidebar right off the right side of the window on my My Comments page. And it'll probably be there for a day or so. At 1200x125 pixels, it will push everyone's sidebars off the page until they are running at 1600x1200. And that's a little awkward since FR isn't really formatted that way.

All this when I generally loathe poetry to begin with.

Thank you for that suggestion. Sorry about the graphic. I will definitely remove it until it is fixed.

Sorry to be such a grouch. But I like my Comments page a certain way. I live on that page. It's pretty much my internet home page.

I suggest you use an image width of 640 or less. It would seem that it would not really cause a problem as long as people are browning at 800x600. And since most browsers use a white background, you might consider using a white background instead of a gray one. Or consider a gradient bar to the right of the animation that fades to white at the right edge. Then it would blend in on white pages. Just a thought.

Well -I- thought it was cute. :^)

So, um, roses are red
Violets are blue
It should be a hoot
To share a rhyme or two

Thanks. I changed it. I was not aware that it was going to be so wide, and you are not the only person who was likely to suffer the result of that! I had the original ping deleted and will do it again without any graphic. Thanks again. :)

Here's some prose pretentiously and unconvincingly presented as verse:

What's It Like to be God?

Have you ever wondered
What it's like to be God?
I have.

As best I can tell, God is alone
And there is nothing else.
No other gods to talk to
Nothing to see or experience
That God does not invent.
Even time.

Unbound by cause and effect
Unrestrained by any flow of history
God dreams.
And the dreams God dreams
We and infinite others call Reality.

With the absence of time
Comes eternity
A limitless kingdom
Enduring beyond the ability of years to measure
Ruled by a King whose Will itself
Embodies the laws which cannot be broken.

No cause or effect, time or space
Constrain God
Who creates all things
Who is all things
Without exception.

That is why sometimes
I think of God
As the instantaneous and eternal explosion of all possibilities.

BTW, thanks for the suggestion about the gradient bar. I am pretty much a novice at some of the details of graphics and really appreciate your suggestion. I will give that a try next time.

Here is my poem about a forgotten war---the Korean War. It is called Thanksgiving On The Yalu.

Thanksgiving on the Yalu,
Our Thoughts of naught but Home,
Sit we here in this Bleak Land,
Together All but yet Alone.

Five Months out from Pusan,
And Two from Inchon,
Then quickly 'cross the Parallel,
T'was a Muddy Marathon.

Soon our Travails will be Over,
For we'll be Stateside Bound,
Not a Nostalgic Glance Back,
As we Quit this Bloody Ground.

Thanksgiving on the Yalu,
Turkey and Trimmings Served up Well,
Stomachs Stuffed and Satisfied,
...Hear that strange, distant Yell?
